0:27 | The holy Gospel |
0:29 | According to St mat Matthew the 25th |
0:31 | chapter |
0:38 | GL Jesus said the kingdom of heaven will |
0:41 | be like 10 virgins who took their lamps |
0:43 | and went to meet the bridegroom five of |
0:46 | them were foolish and five were wise for |
0:49 | when the foolish took their lamps they |
0:51 | took no oil with them but the wise took |
0:53 | flas of oil with their lamps as the |
0:55 | bridegroom was delayed they all became |
0:57 | drowsy and slept but at midnight there |
1:00 | was a cry here is the bridegroom come |
1:02 | out to meet him then all those virgins |
1:05 | Rose and trimmed their lamps and the |
1:07 | foolish said to the wise give us some of |
1:09 | your oil for our lamps are going out but |
1:12 | the wise answered saying well since |
1:14 | there will not be enough for us and for |
1:16 | you go rather to the dealers and buy for |
1:18 | yourselves and while they were going to |
1:21 | buy the bridegroom came and those who |
1:23 | were ready went in with him to the |
1:26 | marriage feast and the door was shut |
1:29 | afterward the virgins came also saying |
1:31 | Lord Lord open to us but he answered |
1:34 | truly I say to you I do not know you |
1:37 | watch therefore for you know neither the |
1:39 | day nor the hour this is the gospel of |
1:42 | the Lord in the name of Jesus Amen all |
1:46 | right we’ve got an interesting text |
1:48 | today uh wise and ver and foolish |
1:51 | virgins and there’s a wedding feast and |
1:53 | there’s a wedding and there’s this whole |
1:55 | Bridal thing going on what are we |
1:58 | supposed to do with it |
2:00 | well I would note here I’m going to do |
2:02 | something a little bit odd I’m going to |
2:03 | use a text from earlier in the year to |
2:05 | kind of help us out if you were to think |
2:07 | of it this way uh Jesus always is on the |
2:10 | quest to save his bride it’s kind of a |
2:13 | big theme of scripture and if we were to |
2:15 | go back into the Old Testament notable |
2:18 | Patriarchs of the Old Testament procured |
2:21 | their Brides at Wells I know that seems |
2:24 | kind of a weird thing to say but it’s |
2:25 | true if you think about Isaac when Isaac |
2:28 | you know when Abraham was ready for |
2:29 | Isaac to have a wife he sent one of his |
2:32 | servants and his servants went back to |
2:34 | padama Aram and there he met Rachel well |
2:38 | sorry Rebecca Rebecca he met Rebecca at |
2:40 | the well and then she became the Bride |
2:43 | of Isaac and then Jacob after he had |
2:46 | swindled I think that’s the right verb |
2:48 | swindled uh the uh the blessing from his |
2:51 | brother and he got it for himself by |
2:54 | deceiving dad which is a very |
2:56 | interesting and sketchy story but all of |
2:58 | that being said he decided that it was |
3:00 | best in his best interest to keep |
3:01 | breathing if he left town and so he |
3:03 | headed back to padam Aram himself and |
3:06 | when he got there first place he got to |
3:09 | was a well and wouldn’t you know it he |
3:11 | laid eyes on his bride for the first |
3:13 | time Rachel right Moses the same was |
3:16 | zura you know when Moses had fled you |
3:18 | know Egypt after Pharaoh wanted to kill |
3:20 | him because Moses killed a couple of EG |
3:23 | Egyptian dudes uh you know that well |
3:25 | Moses he was on the run and he would |
3:27 | went from Egypt to Midian and he also |
3:30 | rescued his wife who was a shepherdess |
3:33 | at a well fascinating set of |
3:36 | circumstances so if we were to go back |
3:39 | to John 4 and that Samaritan woman at |
3:44 | the well and look at it in this light |
3:47 | Jesus is procuring for himself his bride |
3:51 | now we’ve got an interesting story going |
3:53 | on because you’ll note that because |
3:56 | Christ in Our Gospel text today this |
3:59 | parable of the virgins the foolish and |
4:01 | the wise Jesus is hours away from being |
4:05 | crucified for our sins that’s how far |
4:08 | into the Book of Matthew we are so let’s |
4:11 | go back in time let’s take a look at a |
4:13 | woman who kind of exemplifies the |
4:15 | difference between foolishness and |
4:17 | wisdom and that is this woman from |
4:19 | Samaria so it says here in the Gospel of |
4:22 | John chapter 4 a woman from Samaria came |
4:25 | to draw water Jesus happened to be in a |
4:27 | town near Saar that’s modern-day na |
4:30 | which is nestled between Mount gazim and |
4:33 | mount ebal in the West Bank today and um |
4:37 | and so he’s not supposed to be there |
4:39 | Jews don’t really go through Samaria |
4:41 | that’s not a thing that they do they try |
4:43 | to avoid Samaria at all cost and of |
4:46 | course men don’t talk to women and |
4:48 | Jewish men especially don’t talk to |
4:49 | Samaritan women this whole thing is |
4:52 | rather interesting so woman from Samaria |
4:54 | came to draw water it happened to be the |
4:56 | 6th hour noon she didn’t want people to |
4:59 | see see her because she’s really not |
5:01 | welcomed and we’ll learned why um and so |
5:03 | Jesus said to her give me a drink his |
5:06 | disciples had gone away into the city to |
5:08 | buy food so the Samaritan woman said to |
5:10 | him how is it that you a Jew asked for a |
5:13 | drink from me a woman of Samaria for |
5:16 | Jews have no dealings with Samaritans |
5:19 | Jesus answered her wonderful answer by |
5:21 | the way if you knew the gift of God and |
5:24 | who it is that is saying to you give me |
5:26 | a drink you would have asked him and he |
5:28 | would have given you living water what a |
5:30 | kind loving wooing kind of answer This |
5:34 | Woman’s a little bit snarky and Jesus |
5:36 | responds if you knew the gift of God |
5:38 | well this is chapter four of the Gospel |
5:40 | of John and we should know by now |
5:42 | because in chapter three it says God so |
5:45 | loved the world that he gave his only |
5:47 | begotten son that whoever believes in |
5:50 | him will not perish but have eternal |
5:51 | life Jesus is basically saying listen I |
5:55 | don’t want to brag on myself but I’m the |
5:56 | gift of God for you honey now he didn’t |
5:59 | quite say like that but you kind of get |
6:01 | the idea he’s wooing his bride the |
6:04 | church is the bride of Christ and so he |
6:06 | gives a a really really interesting |
6:09 | answer trying to draw her into a |
6:11 | conversation that has more to do with |
6:14 | Christ the spiritual eternal life the |
6:17 | Forgiveness of sins than having to do |
6:20 | with the tedious task of drawing water |
6:23 | out of a well so if you knew the gift of |
6:26 | God and who it is that is saying to you |
6:27 | give me a drink you would have asked him |
6:29 | and he would have given you living water |
6:32 | the woman said to him sir you have |
6:34 | nothing to draw water with and the well |
6:36 | is deep where do you get that living |
6:39 | water are you greater than our father |
6:41 | Jacob he gave us the well and drank from |
6:43 | it himself as did his sons in his |
6:46 | livestock so note this woman at this |
6:49 | point is similar to the foolish virgins |
6:52 | of our text what what’s her Focus the |
6:55 | here and the now and the temporal her |
6:58 | focus is in the world world where your |
7:00 | treasure is your heart will be also |
7:02 | she’s completely oblivious to the true |
7:04 | things of the spirit and we wouldn’t |
7:06 | expect otherwise she is a false |
7:09 | worshipper of God because she’s a |
7:11 | follower of the religion of the |
7:13 | Samaritans which is a weird Frankenstein |
7:16 | of of a religion the best way I can put |
7:18 | it but Jesus here again this is where |
7:22 | he’s meeting his bride something else is |
7:25 | going on here and so Jesus kindly |
7:28 | doesn’t engage her in words of snark or |
7:31 | return uh her snarkiness with anger he |
7:34 | says listen everyone who drinks of this |
7:36 | water will be thirsty again whoever |
7:38 | drinks of the water that I will give him |
7:40 | will never be thirsty again the water |
7:43 | that I will give him will become in him |
7:45 | a spring of water welling up to eternal |
7:49 | life H eternal life that’s interesting |
7:54 | that um Christ here has focused on the |
7:57 | Eternal but watch this |
7:59 | this woman misinterprets Christ’s words |
8:02 | thinking only of the temporal not the |
8:05 | Eternal thinking only of what she can |
8:07 | see smell taste and touch rather than |
8:09 | the true spiritual the woman said to her |
8:12 | sir give me this water so that I will |
8:14 | not be thirsty or have to come here to |
8:17 | draw |
8:18 | water the foolishness of unbelief still |
8:22 | persists and Jesus here at this point |
8:26 | plays a card that well only he can play |
8:30 | because he’s God he knows every one of |
8:32 | us from the inside out Jesus knows all |
8:35 | of the evil that you’ve committed Jesus |
8:37 | also knows all the things that you are |
8:39 | most proud of Jesus knows the things |
8:41 | that you fear the most Jesus knows |
8:44 | everything and every detail of your life |
8:46 | even to the point of having all of your |
8:48 | hairs on your head numbered and for some |
8:51 | of you that’s a small number okay just |
8:54 | saying all of that being said Jesus says |
8:57 | to the woman you go call your husband |
8:59 | and come here the woman answered him I |
9:02 | have no |
9:03 | husband what an answer she’s right but |
9:07 | she’s totally wrong she’s deflecting on |
9:10 | purpose she doesn’t want to get into |
9:12 | that conversation so Jesus drops the |
9:14 | bomb on her you’re right in saying I |
9:16 | have no husband for you have had five |
9:19 | husbands and the one you now have is not |
9:21 | is not your husband what you have said |
9:23 | is true and here’s where we have to work |
9:25 | this theme out Jesus is basically saying |
9:28 | listen the guy you’re shacking up with |
9:31 | right now I know you’ve had a bunch of |
9:32 | failed marriages and we don’t get the |
9:34 | details as to why she has all those |
9:36 | failed marriages but this is a woman |
9:39 | who’s not looked upon very well in her |
9:40 | own village we know this by the fact |
9:42 | that she has to slink out to get water |
9:44 | at noon and so Jesus his |
9:48 | listen you’ve had five husbands which |
9:51 | you’ve said is true but Jesus here |
9:54 | desires and seeks to legitimately be the |
9:59 | husband that she has been looking |
10:02 | for and you can’t think of it in crass |
10:05 | physical terms here Jesus is the |
10:10 | bridegroom and I would remind you what |
10:12 | the scriptures so wonderfully teach us |
10:14 | in the book of Ephesians chapter 5 verse |
10:18 | 25 husbands love your wives as Christ |
10:23 | has loved the church and gave himself up |
10:26 | for her so that he might sanctify her |
10:30 | having cleansed her by the washing of |
10:33 | water with the word so that he might |
10:35 | present the church to himself in |
10:38 | splendor without spot or wrinkle or any |
10:41 | such thing so that she might be holy and |
10:45 | without |
10:48 | blemish what a great husband what a |
10:51 | great groom Jesus is he finds his bride |
10:56 | in the midst of her sin in the throws of |
11:01 | her |
11:02 | ungodliness in the guilt of her shame in |
11:06 | the muck of her unworthiness and what |
11:09 | does he do rather than give her a |
11:12 | scolding and say I don’t want to have |
11:13 | anything to do with you he instead goes |
11:16 | to the Cross bleeds and dies for her |
11:19 | sins and in the washing of baptism |
11:21 | washes away all of her filth and muck |
11:24 | and then in the righteousness that comes |
11:26 | from Faith he clothes her in slender |
11:29 | without spot or wrinkle so that she may |
11:32 | not be put to |
11:34 | shame and that’s what Jesus is doing in |
11:37 | this text and you’ll note up to this |
11:39 | point the woman has been completely |
11:43 | foolish in her responses she doesn’t |
11:46 | even |
11:47 | recognize her husband our husband as |
11:52 | Christians and so the woman said to him |
11:55 | sir I perceive you are a prophet our |
11:59 | fathers worshiped on this mountain but |
12:01 | you say you Jews say that in Jerusalem |
12:03 | is the place where people ought to |
12:05 | worship she decides to change the |
12:07 | subject to one of those forbidden |
12:08 | subjects you know the ones you’re not |
12:09 | supposed to talk about at Christmas and |
12:11 | Thanksgiving religion and politics she |
12:13 | goes for the jugular and goes right to |
12:15 | the religion question knowing that this |
12:17 | is where the conversation’s supposed to |
12:18 | break down because she’s had this |
12:22 | conversation before she’s seen this |
12:24 | conversation and how it spins out of |
12:26 | control she’s at this point doing |
12:28 | everything she can to not be pursued by |
12:31 | this |
12:32 | lover to rebuff |
12:35 | him Jesus said to her woman believe me |
12:38 | the hour is coming when neither on this |
12:40 | mountain nor in Jerusalem will you |
12:42 | worship the father this hour is coming |
12:46 | uh the hour of Christ’s death the hour |
12:49 | of Christ’s Resurrection the hour when |
12:52 | Christ is nailed to the cross and he is |
12:56 | suffering and bleeding and dying for |
12:58 | this woman sins your sins and mine that |
13:02 | hour did come and in that hour Christ |
13:05 | cried out my God my God why have you |
13:07 | forsaken me he was forsaken so that we |
13:10 | can be forgiven and |
13:12 | cherished you you remember your wedding |
13:15 | vows some of you I promise to love |
13:20 | honor and cherish cherish is a wonderful |
13:25 | word and it shows that love that Christ |
13:29 | has here he cherishes this woman who is |
13:32 | part of his bride and he desires for her |
13:36 | to be one who worships the father in |
13:39 | spirit and in truth that’s why he goes |
13:41 | to the Cross to die for her that’s why |
13:43 | he’s wooing her said so Jesus said |
13:46 | listen you worship what you do not know |
13:48 | you Samaritans are wrong however we we |
13:52 | Jews we worship what we know for |
13:54 | salvation is from the Jews but the hour |
13:57 | is coming and is now here when when the |
13:58 | true worshippers will worship the father |
14:00 | in spirit and in truth the father is |
14:04 | seeking such people to worship Him check |
14:07 | that out God the father is the Seeker |
14:10 | not you not me not anyone else God is |
14:13 | the one he is seeking such people to |
14:15 | worship him God is spirit and he is |
14:17 | truth and those who worship Him must |
14:19 | worship Him in spirit and in |
14:21 | truth and now something bizarre happens |
14:24 | and absolutely fascinating the woman |
14:27 | said to him I know that Messiah is |
14:29 | coming he who was called the Christ when |
14:30 | he comes he will tell us all things and |
14:34 | almost kind of in well like a legendary |
14:38 | way you think of Zoro I mentioned Zoro |
14:40 | here before but Zoro he always wears a |
14:43 | mask right and that’s kind of the point |
14:45 | of the Incarnation God has taken on |
14:47 | human flesh and it’s tough to spot deity |
14:51 | hidden so well Jesus at this point lifts |
14:54 | the mask and winks and says I who speak |
14:58 | to you am |
15:00 | he out of his great love for his bride |
15:03 | he reveals himself to her so just then |
15:07 | his disciples came back they marveled |
15:09 | that he was talking with a woman no one |
15:10 | said well what do you seek or why are |
15:12 | you talking with her so the woman left |
15:14 | her water jar and went away into town |
15:16 | and said to the people come see a man |
15:18 | who told me all that I ever did can this |
15:21 | be the |
15:23 | Christ and in the blink of an eye in the |
15:27 | twinkling of a moment |
15:29 | we see that something amazing has |
15:31 | happened she has gone from being |
15:34 | foolish to being |
15:36 | wise to being an unbeliever into a |
15:40 | Believer Christ has got his wife and |
15:45 | it’s beautiful when you think about it |
15:47 | come see a man who told me all that I |
15:49 | ever did can this be the Christ and so |
15:52 | they all went out of the town and they |
15:54 | were coming to him the story continues |
15:57 | and says many Samaran itans from that |
15:59 | town believed in Jesus because of the |
16:01 | woman’s testimony he told me all that I |
16:04 | ever did so when the Samaritans came to |
16:06 | him they asked him to stay with them and |
16:08 | he stayed there for two days and many |
16:10 | more believed because of his word they |
16:13 | said to the woman it is no longer |
16:15 | because of what you said that we believe |
16:17 | for we have heard for ourselves and we |
16:19 | know that this is indeed the savior of |
16:21 | the |
16:22 | world not just her but her town and so |
16:27 | many people now believe that Jesus is |
16:30 | the |
16:31 | Christ and by believing they have life |
16:34 | in his name they’ve gone from being |
16:38 | foolish to being wise and this is all |
16:42 | about that bride and so we go then to |
16:44 | Our Gospel text which has these |
16:47 | wonderful Bridal themes as Jesus is |
16:49 | about to be crucified he’s got the |
16:51 | wedding on his mind he knows that he’s |
16:55 | going to the cross in order to sanctify |
16:59 | to redeem to cleanse and to glorify his |
17:03 | sinful bride so Jesus then gives words |
17:06 | of wisdom for his bride says then the |
17:09 | Kingdom of Heaven it’ll be like 10 |
17:12 | virgins who took their lamps and went to |
17:14 | meet the bridegroom five of them were |
17:17 | foolish five were wise the foolish ones |
17:20 | like everybody else on this planet they |
17:22 | all they care about is what are we going |
17:23 | to eat what are we going to drink how |
17:25 | are we going to make our money what’s |
17:26 | our next vacation always always focused |
17:29 | in on the temporal and the next big |
17:32 | thing so that they can have that |
17:33 | experience and add it to their bucket |
17:35 | list because YOLO you only live once |
17:38 | right and this is the focus of all human |
17:40 | beings it’s always on the temporal but |
17:43 | you’ll note that we human beings rarely |
17:45 | take a real good look at the |
17:49 | Eternal and when we do we often think |
17:52 | well it’s not that big of a problem I’ll |
17:53 | just make sure to give some money to the |
17:56 | poor at Thanksgiving and that that’ll |
17:58 | make me good with God right this is just |
18:01 | nonsense they really do not consider |
18:04 | their own sin they do not consider their |
18:06 | own unworthiness they do not consider |
18:09 | that Christ has bled and died for their |
18:11 | sins and that salvation is only found in |
18:14 | him so five were foolish five were wise |
18:18 | for when the foolish took their lamps |
18:19 | they took no oil with them now I’ve |
18:22 | preached on this before over and over |
18:24 | again I agree with Luther you’ll note |
18:26 | there’s a lot of ink that’s been spilled |
18:28 | if you’ve read the commentaries you read |
18:29 | the church fathers you read the debates |
18:31 | back and forth during after the during |
18:33 | and after the Protestant Reformation |
18:35 | everybody wants to know what this oil is |
18:38 | okay so back in the church fathers you |
18:40 | look at St Augustine St Augustine said |
18:41 | well that oil has to be charity and I |
18:44 | sit there and go no sorry Augustine |
18:46 | you’re great but that’s not what it is |
18:48 | otherwise we’re saved by our works I |
18:50 | think Augustine has the wrong problem |
18:52 | Luther goes to the way other side no |
18:54 | it’s Faith it’s got to be Faith because |
18:56 | we’re only saved by grace through faith |
18:58 | Luther I agree with you and then to |
19:00 | concede to those who think it’s probably |
19:02 | deeper than this looking at themes |
19:05 | throughout the scripture linking oil to |
19:07 | the Holy Spirit I think you can probably |
19:09 | make a concession along those lines and |
19:11 | say if you want to think that this oil |
19:13 | is the holy spirit that makes sense |
19:15 | because what do we say in the catechism |
19:17 | in that third article of the Creed I |
19:20 | believe that I cannot by my own reason |
19:22 | or strength come to God or believe in |
19:24 | him but the Holy Spirit right through |
19:27 | the gospel has made me right so this |
19:30 | idea then the holy spirit is the one who |
19:32 | Woos us the holy spirit is the one who |
19:35 | draws us the holy spirit is the one who |
19:37 | then gives us Faith he raises us from |
19:41 | the dead he is the one who resuscitates |
19:44 | us regenerates us and he now being |
19:47 | indwelt within us is the one that |
19:50 | produces within us the fruit of the |
19:51 | spirit the holy spirit is the source of |
19:55 | our faith and he works through his word |
19:58 | and so you can think of the oil as the |
20:00 | word of the Holy Spirit and Faith they |
20:03 | all kind of come together in one big |
20:06 | package so and you’re going to note then |
20:10 | can you believe for somebody |
20:12 | else no you cannot and you’re going to |
20:15 | note then you can’t give your faith to |
20:17 | anybody else but today can you help |
20:21 | somebody have this Faith Can you help |
20:25 | somebody hear the voice of the Holy |
20:27 | Spirit yes you can do this today you can |
20:31 | share the gospel with your friends you |
20:32 | can confront them with their sin assure |
20:35 | them of the Forgiveness of sins that is |
20:37 | in Christ because we like that Samaritan |
20:40 | woman none of us come to Jesus as godly |
20:42 | people we’re all ungodly the good news |
20:45 | is for all Sinners good news that they |
20:47 | do not need to perish for their sins but |
20:49 | Christ in his great love for his bride |
20:52 | has laid down his life for us and so |
20:57 | call them to repentance preach the good |
20:59 | news to them so the foolish took no |
21:02 | flasks of oil with their lamps so as the |
21:04 | bridegroom was delayed they all became |
21:07 | drowsy and slept and here we got to make |
21:09 | a point this isn’t the sleep of falling |
21:12 | back into sin that that’s a theme in |
21:14 | scripture by the way you know falling |
21:17 | back into SL sin and going back to |
21:19 | sleeping you people they do awful things |
21:23 | in the dark and so as a result of it |
21:25 | sleep sometimes in the scripture is |
21:27 | mentioned as this idea of going back |
21:29 | falling asleep and thinking only of the |
21:32 | temporal things and letting the sin and |
21:34 | the concepts of the world overtake us |
21:36 | and we go back to the Dominion of |
21:38 | Darkness that’s not what this is talking |
21:40 | about here this is talking about what |
21:42 | happens to all of us if Christ continues |
21:45 | to T and you’ll note he seems to be |
21:47 | taking his dear sweet time because it’s |
21:50 | been 2,000 years almost 2,000 years |
21:53 | it’ll be 2,000 years in the year 202 |
21:56 | 2030 since Christ has been ascended into |
21:59 | heaven 2,000 years and he sit there go |
22:02 | what’s he waiting on well it’s not his |
22:05 | will that any should perish if it’s not |
22:07 | his will that any should perish then the |
22:10 | the remainder of the bride of Christ |
22:12 | isn’t in yet Christ loves his bride that |
22:15 | much that he delays for her sake and |
22:17 | think of it this way if Jesus came back |
22:18 | in |
22:19 | 1862 where would we be right so you’ll |
22:24 | know Christ’s delay of 2,000 years has |
22:27 | made it so that we have been brought |
22:29 | into the fold we have been invited to |
22:31 | this marriage feast and so Christ has |
22:34 | taken his dear sweet time and I say if |
22:36 | he wants to take longer he’s welcome to |
22:38 | right he knows what he’s doing he’ll be |
22:40 | here when he’s good and ready but the |
22:42 | day of Grace does come to an end and |
22:46 | that’s really the hint here at this text |
22:48 | that’s really one of the points that |
22:50 | Christ is making so they fell asleep |
22:53 | which is the sleep of death and at |
22:55 | midnight the day when Jesus returned |
22:57 | turns in glory to judge the living and |
22:59 | the dead there was a cry here is the |
23:02 | bridegroom come out to meet him and |
23:04 | everybody pops out of their graves and |
23:06 | then all those virgins Rose and trimmed |
23:09 | their lamps and the foolish said to the |
23:10 | wise give us some of your oil for our |
23:13 | lamps are going out but the wise |
23:16 | answered saying well since there will |
23:18 | not be enough for us and for you go |
23:21 | rather to the dealers and buy for |
23:23 | yourselves who buys oil in the middle of |
23:26 | the night you’ll note they can offer no |
23:29 | help when the day of judgment comes I |
23:32 | cannot help you I can help you today but |
23:36 | I cannot help you on the day of judgment |
23:38 | on the day of judgment I will be |
23:40 | otherwise occupied right that’s kind of |
23:42 | the point and so will you and so your |
23:44 | neighbors who are dead in trespasses and |
23:47 | sins Like These Foolish virgins that |
23:49 | they cannot be helped by you on that day |
23:51 | this is the day when we help them so |
23:55 | since we cannot there will not be enough |
23:57 | for us and for you you go rather to the |
23:58 | dealers and buy some for yourselves and |
24:01 | so while they were going foolish virgins |
24:03 | looking for oil that they can purchase |
24:05 | in the middle of the night this is |
24:06 | getting foolish by the minute is that a |
24:08 | word and they were going to buy then the |
24:12 | bridegroom came and those who were ready |
24:14 | went in with him to the marriage feast |
24:17 | and then the door was shut the |
24:22 | end H and here’s where we have to note |
24:26 | this if you do not hear the word of God |
24:29 | you are not ready if you will not hear |
24:33 | the words of Christ and the cause of |
24:36 | scripture to repent and the words of |
24:39 | scripture which reveal to us that all of |
24:41 | this that we see is coming to an end |
24:45 | every last bit of it in fact all of the |
24:48 | schemes of human governments and peoples |
24:50 | and conspiracy people and all this kind |
24:52 | of stuff it’s all going to come crashing |
24:54 | down in one cataclysmic day |
24:58 | why are you investing so much time and |
25:01 | effort on stuff that is going to |
25:04 | burn right it’s because you’re only |
25:07 | thinking of the temporal and so we must |
25:09 | understand this as lutherans we do not |
25:12 | believe in once saved always saved we |
25:16 | recognize that The Temptations of the |
25:18 | devil the world and our own s sinful |
25:22 | flesh can lead us back into darkness |
25:26 | that we can forfeit this great faith and |
25:28 | salvation that we have all you’ve got to |
25:31 | do is throw Jesus and Chuck him behind |
25:33 | you stop coming to church stop hearing |
25:36 | the word stop hearing that your sins are |
25:39 | forgiven stop eating the body and blood |
25:41 | of Christ given and shed for the |
25:42 | Forgiveness of your sins and over a |
25:44 | short amount of time like the weeds in |
25:47 | my |
25:48 | yard right you’ll go back to being wild |
25:52 | and |
25:53 | foolish and so these are words of wisdom |
25:55 | from Christ in a sense of a warning |
25:58 | right |
26:00 | so the door was shut afterwards the |
26:04 | other virgins came also saying Lord Lord |
26:06 | open to us he answered truly I I say to |
26:10 | you I don’t know you so watch therefore |
26:14 | for you know neither the day or the hour |
26:18 | so be assured of |
26:20 | this and this fact only that Christ has |
26:25 | bled and died for you and for me |
26:28 | and it is utterly foolish that anybody |
26:31 | ends up in hell it is not God’s will |
26:34 | that any should perish and any who do it |
26:37 | is their fault it is their foolishness |
26:39 | that brought them to the brink and then |
26:42 | threw them into the pit of |
26:44 | disaster which awaits everybody who |
26:47 | persists in sin and unbelief so brothers |
26:49 | and sisters rejoice in this fact that |
26:52 | Christ has bled and died for you that |
26:53 | he’s saved you that he’s given you his |
26:55 | holy spirit that he’s forgiven you of |
26:57 | all of your trespasses and sins and he |
27:00 | continues to sustain us now with the |
27:03 | faith that he has given us through the |
27:06 | word through the sacraments so that we |
27:08 | would not hear those horrible words |
27:12 | depart from me I never knew you instead |
27:15 | we will hear as we hear in next week’s |
27:17 | gospel well done good and faithful |
27:19 | servant enter into the joy of your |
27:22 | master all of this is by grace through |
27:25 | faith by the husband who leves loved his |
27:28 | wife so much that he laid down his life |
27:30 | for her in the name of Jesus |
27:37 | Amen |
