0:27The holy Gospel
0:29According to St mat Matthew the 25th
0:31chapter
0:38GL Jesus said the kingdom of heaven will
0:41be like 10 virgins who took their lamps
0:43and went to meet the bridegroom five of
0:46them were foolish and five were wise for
0:49when the foolish took their lamps they
0:51took no oil with them but the wise took
0:53flas of oil with their lamps as the
0:55bridegroom was delayed they all became
0:57drowsy and slept but at midnight there
1:00was a cry here is the bridegroom come
1:02out to meet him then all those virgins
1:05Rose and trimmed their lamps and the
1:07foolish said to the wise give us some of
1:09your oil for our lamps are going out but
1:12the wise answered saying well since
1:14there will not be enough for us and for
1:16you go rather to the dealers and buy for
1:18yourselves and while they were going to
1:21buy the bridegroom came and those who
1:23were ready went in with him to the
1:26marriage feast and the door was shut
1:29afterward the virgins came also saying
1:31Lord Lord open to us but he answered
1:34truly I say to you I do not know you
1:37watch therefore for you know neither the
1:39day nor the hour this is the gospel of
1:42the Lord in the name of Jesus Amen all
1:46right we’ve got an interesting text
1:48today uh wise and ver and foolish
1:51virgins and there’s a wedding feast and
1:53there’s a wedding and there’s this whole
1:55Bridal thing going on what are we
1:58supposed to do with it
2:00well I would note here I’m going to do
2:02something a little bit odd I’m going to
2:03use a text from earlier in the year to
2:05kind of help us out if you were to think
2:07of it this way uh Jesus always is on the
2:10quest to save his bride it’s kind of a
2:13big theme of scripture and if we were to
2:15go back into the Old Testament notable
2:18Patriarchs of the Old Testament procured
2:21their Brides at Wells I know that seems
2:24kind of a weird thing to say but it’s
2:25true if you think about Isaac when Isaac
2:28you know when Abraham was ready for
2:29Isaac to have a wife he sent one of his
2:32servants and his servants went back to
2:34padama Aram and there he met Rachel well
2:38sorry Rebecca Rebecca he met Rebecca at
2:40the well and then she became the Bride
2:43of Isaac and then Jacob after he had
2:46swindled I think that’s the right verb
2:48swindled uh the uh the blessing from his
2:51brother and he got it for himself by
2:54deceiving dad which is a very
2:56interesting and sketchy story but all of
2:58that being said he decided that it was
3:00best in his best interest to keep
3:01breathing if he left town and so he
3:03headed back to padam Aram himself and
3:06when he got there first place he got to
3:09was a well and wouldn’t you know it he
3:11laid eyes on his bride for the first
3:13time Rachel right Moses the same was
3:16zura you know when Moses had fled you
3:18know Egypt after Pharaoh wanted to kill
3:20him because Moses killed a couple of EG
3:23Egyptian dudes uh you know that well
3:25Moses he was on the run and he would
3:27went from Egypt to Midian and he also
3:30rescued his wife who was a shepherdess
3:33at a well fascinating set of
3:36circumstances so if we were to go back
3:39to John 4 and that Samaritan woman at
3:44the well and look at it in this light
3:47Jesus is procuring for himself his bride
3:51now we’ve got an interesting story going
3:53on because you’ll note that because
3:56Christ in Our Gospel text today this
3:59parable of the virgins the foolish and
4:01the wise Jesus is hours away from being
4:05crucified for our sins that’s how far
4:08into the Book of Matthew we are so let’s
4:11go back in time let’s take a look at a
4:13woman who kind of exemplifies the
4:15difference between foolishness and
4:17wisdom and that is this woman from
4:19Samaria so it says here in the Gospel of
4:22John chapter 4 a woman from Samaria came
4:25to draw water Jesus happened to be in a
4:27town near Saar that’s modern-day na
4:30which is nestled between Mount gazim and
4:33mount ebal in the West Bank today and um
4:37and so he’s not supposed to be there
4:39Jews don’t really go through Samaria
4:41that’s not a thing that they do they try
4:43to avoid Samaria at all cost and of
4:46course men don’t talk to women and
4:48Jewish men especially don’t talk to
4:49Samaritan women this whole thing is
4:52rather interesting so woman from Samaria
4:54came to draw water it happened to be the
4:566th hour noon she didn’t want people to
4:59see see her because she’s really not
5:01welcomed and we’ll learned why um and so
5:03Jesus said to her give me a drink his
5:06disciples had gone away into the city to
5:08buy food so the Samaritan woman said to
5:10him how is it that you a Jew asked for a
5:13drink from me a woman of Samaria for
5:16Jews have no dealings with Samaritans
5:19Jesus answered her wonderful answer by
5:21the way if you knew the gift of God and
5:24who it is that is saying to you give me
5:26a drink you would have asked him and he
5:28would have given you living water what a
5:30kind loving wooing kind of answer This
5:34Woman’s a little bit snarky and Jesus
5:36responds if you knew the gift of God
5:38well this is chapter four of the Gospel
5:40of John and we should know by now
5:42because in chapter three it says God so
5:45loved the world that he gave his only
5:47begotten son that whoever believes in
5:50him will not perish but have eternal
5:51life Jesus is basically saying listen I
5:55don’t want to brag on myself but I’m the
5:56gift of God for you honey now he didn’t
5:59quite say like that but you kind of get
6:01the idea he’s wooing his bride the
6:04church is the bride of Christ and so he
6:06gives a a really really interesting
6:09answer trying to draw her into a
6:11conversation that has more to do with
6:14Christ the spiritual eternal life the
6:17Forgiveness of sins than having to do
6:20with the tedious task of drawing water
6:23out of a well so if you knew the gift of
6:26God and who it is that is saying to you
6:27give me a drink you would have asked him
6:29and he would have given you living water
6:32the woman said to him sir you have
6:34nothing to draw water with and the well
6:36is deep where do you get that living
6:39water are you greater than our father
6:41Jacob he gave us the well and drank from
6:43it himself as did his sons in his
6:46livestock so note this woman at this
6:49point is similar to the foolish virgins
6:52of our text what what’s her Focus the
6:55here and the now and the temporal her
6:58focus is in the world world where your
7:00treasure is your heart will be also
7:02she’s completely oblivious to the true
7:04things of the spirit and we wouldn’t
7:06expect otherwise she is a false
7:09worshipper of God because she’s a
7:11follower of the religion of the
7:13Samaritans which is a weird Frankenstein
7:16of of a religion the best way I can put
7:18it but Jesus here again this is where
7:22he’s meeting his bride something else is
7:25going on here and so Jesus kindly
7:28doesn’t engage her in words of snark or
7:31return uh her snarkiness with anger he
7:34says listen everyone who drinks of this
7:36water will be thirsty again whoever
7:38drinks of the water that I will give him
7:40will never be thirsty again the water
7:43that I will give him will become in him
7:45a spring of water welling up to eternal
7:49life H eternal life that’s interesting
7:54that um Christ here has focused on the
7:57Eternal but watch this
7:59this woman misinterprets Christ’s words
8:02thinking only of the temporal not the
8:05Eternal thinking only of what she can
8:07see smell taste and touch rather than
8:09the true spiritual the woman said to her
8:12sir give me this water so that I will
8:14not be thirsty or have to come here to
8:17draw
8:18water the foolishness of unbelief still
8:22persists and Jesus here at this point
8:26plays a card that well only he can play
8:30because he’s God he knows every one of
8:32us from the inside out Jesus knows all
8:35of the evil that you’ve committed Jesus
8:37also knows all the things that you are
8:39most proud of Jesus knows the things
8:41that you fear the most Jesus knows
8:44everything and every detail of your life
8:46even to the point of having all of your
8:48hairs on your head numbered and for some
8:51of you that’s a small number okay just
8:54saying all of that being said Jesus says
8:57to the woman you go call your husband
8:59and come here the woman answered him I
9:02have no
9:03husband what an answer she’s right but
9:07she’s totally wrong she’s deflecting on
9:10purpose she doesn’t want to get into
9:12that conversation so Jesus drops the
9:14bomb on her you’re right in saying I
9:16have no husband for you have had five
9:19husbands and the one you now have is not
9:21is not your husband what you have said
9:23is true and here’s where we have to work
9:25this theme out Jesus is basically saying
9:28listen the guy you’re shacking up with
9:31right now I know you’ve had a bunch of
9:32failed marriages and we don’t get the
9:34details as to why she has all those
9:36failed marriages but this is a woman
9:39who’s not looked upon very well in her
9:40own village we know this by the fact
9:42that she has to slink out to get water
9:44at noon and so Jesus his
9:48listen you’ve had five husbands which
9:51you’ve said is true but Jesus here
9:54desires and seeks to legitimately be the
9:59husband that she has been looking
10:02for and you can’t think of it in crass
10:05physical terms here Jesus is the
10:10bridegroom and I would remind you what
10:12the scriptures so wonderfully teach us
10:14in the book of Ephesians chapter 5 verse
10:1825 husbands love your wives as Christ
10:23has loved the church and gave himself up
10:26for her so that he might sanctify her
10:30having cleansed her by the washing of
10:33water with the word so that he might
10:35present the church to himself in
10:38splendor without spot or wrinkle or any
10:41such thing so that she might be holy and
10:45without
10:48blemish what a great husband what a
10:51great groom Jesus is he finds his bride
10:56in the midst of her sin in the throws of
11:01her
11:02ungodliness in the guilt of her shame in
11:06the muck of her unworthiness and what
11:09does he do rather than give her a
11:12scolding and say I don’t want to have
11:13anything to do with you he instead goes
11:16to the Cross bleeds and dies for her
11:19sins and in the washing of baptism
11:21washes away all of her filth and muck
11:24and then in the righteousness that comes
11:26from Faith he clothes her in slender
11:29without spot or wrinkle so that she may
11:32not be put to
11:34shame and that’s what Jesus is doing in
11:37this text and you’ll note up to this
11:39point the woman has been completely
11:43foolish in her responses she doesn’t
11:46even
11:47recognize her husband our husband as
11:52Christians and so the woman said to him
11:55sir I perceive you are a prophet our
11:59fathers worshiped on this mountain but
12:01you say you Jews say that in Jerusalem
12:03is the place where people ought to
12:05worship she decides to change the
12:07subject to one of those forbidden
12:08subjects you know the ones you’re not
12:09supposed to talk about at Christmas and
12:11Thanksgiving religion and politics she
12:13goes for the jugular and goes right to
12:15the religion question knowing that this
12:17is where the conversation’s supposed to
12:18break down because she’s had this
12:22conversation before she’s seen this
12:24conversation and how it spins out of
12:26control she’s at this point doing
12:28everything she can to not be pursued by
12:31this
12:32lover to rebuff
12:35him Jesus said to her woman believe me
12:38the hour is coming when neither on this
12:40mountain nor in Jerusalem will you
12:42worship the father this hour is coming
12:46uh the hour of Christ’s death the hour
12:49of Christ’s Resurrection the hour when
12:52Christ is nailed to the cross and he is
12:56suffering and bleeding and dying for
12:58this woman sins your sins and mine that
13:02hour did come and in that hour Christ
13:05cried out my God my God why have you
13:07forsaken me he was forsaken so that we
13:10can be forgiven and
13:12cherished you you remember your wedding
13:15vows some of you I promise to love
13:20honor and cherish cherish is a wonderful
13:25word and it shows that love that Christ
13:29has here he cherishes this woman who is
13:32part of his bride and he desires for her
13:36to be one who worships the father in
13:39spirit and in truth that’s why he goes
13:41to the Cross to die for her that’s why
13:43he’s wooing her said so Jesus said
13:46listen you worship what you do not know
13:48you Samaritans are wrong however we we
13:52Jews we worship what we know for
13:54salvation is from the Jews but the hour
13:57is coming and is now here when when the
13:58true worshippers will worship the father
14:00in spirit and in truth the father is
14:04seeking such people to worship Him check
14:07that out God the father is the Seeker
14:10not you not me not anyone else God is
14:13the one he is seeking such people to
14:15worship him God is spirit and he is
14:17truth and those who worship Him must
14:19worship Him in spirit and in
14:21truth and now something bizarre happens
14:24and absolutely fascinating the woman
14:27said to him I know that Messiah is
14:29coming he who was called the Christ when
14:30he comes he will tell us all things and
14:34almost kind of in well like a legendary
14:38way you think of Zoro I mentioned Zoro
14:40here before but Zoro he always wears a
14:43mask right and that’s kind of the point
14:45of the Incarnation God has taken on
14:47human flesh and it’s tough to spot deity
14:51hidden so well Jesus at this point lifts
14:54the mask and winks and says I who speak
14:58to you am
15:00he out of his great love for his bride
15:03he reveals himself to her so just then
15:07his disciples came back they marveled
15:09that he was talking with a woman no one
15:10said well what do you seek or why are
15:12you talking with her so the woman left
15:14her water jar and went away into town
15:16and said to the people come see a man
15:18who told me all that I ever did can this
15:21be the
15:23Christ and in the blink of an eye in the
15:27twinkling of a moment
15:29we see that something amazing has
15:31happened she has gone from being
15:34foolish to being
15:36wise to being an unbeliever into a
15:40Believer Christ has got his wife and
15:45it’s beautiful when you think about it
15:47come see a man who told me all that I
15:49ever did can this be the Christ and so
15:52they all went out of the town and they
15:54were coming to him the story continues
15:57and says many Samaran itans from that
15:59town believed in Jesus because of the
16:01woman’s testimony he told me all that I
16:04ever did so when the Samaritans came to
16:06him they asked him to stay with them and
16:08he stayed there for two days and many
16:10more believed because of his word they
16:13said to the woman it is no longer
16:15because of what you said that we believe
16:17for we have heard for ourselves and we
16:19know that this is indeed the savior of
16:21the
16:22world not just her but her town and so
16:27many people now believe that Jesus is
16:30the
16:31Christ and by believing they have life
16:34in his name they’ve gone from being
16:38foolish to being wise and this is all
16:42about that bride and so we go then to
16:44Our Gospel text which has these
16:47wonderful Bridal themes as Jesus is
16:49about to be crucified he’s got the
16:51wedding on his mind he knows that he’s
16:55going to the cross in order to sanctify
16:59to redeem to cleanse and to glorify his
17:03sinful bride so Jesus then gives words
17:06of wisdom for his bride says then the
17:09Kingdom of Heaven it’ll be like 10
17:12virgins who took their lamps and went to
17:14meet the bridegroom five of them were
17:17foolish five were wise the foolish ones
17:20like everybody else on this planet they
17:22all they care about is what are we going
17:23to eat what are we going to drink how
17:25are we going to make our money what’s
17:26our next vacation always always focused
17:29in on the temporal and the next big
17:32thing so that they can have that
17:33experience and add it to their bucket
17:35list because YOLO you only live once
17:38right and this is the focus of all human
17:40beings it’s always on the temporal but
17:43you’ll note that we human beings rarely
17:45take a real good look at the
17:49Eternal and when we do we often think
17:52well it’s not that big of a problem I’ll
17:53just make sure to give some money to the
17:56poor at Thanksgiving and that that’ll
17:58make me good with God right this is just
18:01nonsense they really do not consider
18:04their own sin they do not consider their
18:06own unworthiness they do not consider
18:09that Christ has bled and died for their
18:11sins and that salvation is only found in
18:14him so five were foolish five were wise
18:18for when the foolish took their lamps
18:19they took no oil with them now I’ve
18:22preached on this before over and over
18:24again I agree with Luther you’ll note
18:26there’s a lot of ink that’s been spilled
18:28if you’ve read the commentaries you read
18:29the church fathers you read the debates
18:31back and forth during after the during
18:33and after the Protestant Reformation
18:35everybody wants to know what this oil is
18:38okay so back in the church fathers you
18:40look at St Augustine St Augustine said
18:41well that oil has to be charity and I
18:44sit there and go no sorry Augustine
18:46you’re great but that’s not what it is
18:48otherwise we’re saved by our works I
18:50think Augustine has the wrong problem
18:52Luther goes to the way other side no
18:54it’s Faith it’s got to be Faith because
18:56we’re only saved by grace through faith
18:58Luther I agree with you and then to
19:00concede to those who think it’s probably
19:02deeper than this looking at themes
19:05throughout the scripture linking oil to
19:07the Holy Spirit I think you can probably
19:09make a concession along those lines and
19:11say if you want to think that this oil
19:13is the holy spirit that makes sense
19:15because what do we say in the catechism
19:17in that third article of the Creed I
19:20believe that I cannot by my own reason
19:22or strength come to God or believe in
19:24him but the Holy Spirit right through
19:27the gospel has made me right so this
19:30idea then the holy spirit is the one who
19:32Woos us the holy spirit is the one who
19:35draws us the holy spirit is the one who
19:37then gives us Faith he raises us from
19:41the dead he is the one who resuscitates
19:44us regenerates us and he now being
19:47indwelt within us is the one that
19:50produces within us the fruit of the
19:51spirit the holy spirit is the source of
19:55our faith and he works through his word
19:58and so you can think of the oil as the
20:00word of the Holy Spirit and Faith they
20:03all kind of come together in one big
20:06package so and you’re going to note then
20:10can you believe for somebody
20:12else no you cannot and you’re going to
20:15note then you can’t give your faith to
20:17anybody else but today can you help
20:21somebody have this Faith Can you help
20:25somebody hear the voice of the Holy
20:27Spirit yes you can do this today you can
20:31share the gospel with your friends you
20:32can confront them with their sin assure
20:35them of the Forgiveness of sins that is
20:37in Christ because we like that Samaritan
20:40woman none of us come to Jesus as godly
20:42people we’re all ungodly the good news
20:45is for all Sinners good news that they
20:47do not need to perish for their sins but
20:49Christ in his great love for his bride
20:52has laid down his life for us and so
20:57call them to repentance preach the good
20:59news to them so the foolish took no
21:02flasks of oil with their lamps so as the
21:04bridegroom was delayed they all became
21:07drowsy and slept and here we got to make
21:09a point this isn’t the sleep of falling
21:12back into sin that that’s a theme in
21:14scripture by the way you know falling
21:17back into SL sin and going back to
21:19sleeping you people they do awful things
21:23in the dark and so as a result of it
21:25sleep sometimes in the scripture is
21:27mentioned as this idea of going back
21:29falling asleep and thinking only of the
21:32temporal things and letting the sin and
21:34the concepts of the world overtake us
21:36and we go back to the Dominion of
21:38Darkness that’s not what this is talking
21:40about here this is talking about what
21:42happens to all of us if Christ continues
21:45to T and you’ll note he seems to be
21:47taking his dear sweet time because it’s
21:50been 2,000 years almost 2,000 years
21:53it’ll be 2,000 years in the year 202
21:562030 since Christ has been ascended into
21:59heaven 2,000 years and he sit there go
22:02what’s he waiting on well it’s not his
22:05will that any should perish if it’s not
22:07his will that any should perish then the
22:10the remainder of the bride of Christ
22:12isn’t in yet Christ loves his bride that
22:15much that he delays for her sake and
22:17think of it this way if Jesus came back
22:18in
22:191862 where would we be right so you’ll
22:24know Christ’s delay of 2,000 years has
22:27made it so that we have been brought
22:29into the fold we have been invited to
22:31this marriage feast and so Christ has
22:34taken his dear sweet time and I say if
22:36he wants to take longer he’s welcome to
22:38right he knows what he’s doing he’ll be
22:40here when he’s good and ready but the
22:42day of Grace does come to an end and
22:46that’s really the hint here at this text
22:48that’s really one of the points that
22:50Christ is making so they fell asleep
22:53which is the sleep of death and at
22:55midnight the day when Jesus returned
22:57turns in glory to judge the living and
22:59the dead there was a cry here is the
23:02bridegroom come out to meet him and
23:04everybody pops out of their graves and
23:06then all those virgins Rose and trimmed
23:09their lamps and the foolish said to the
23:10wise give us some of your oil for our
23:13lamps are going out but the wise
23:16answered saying well since there will
23:18not be enough for us and for you go
23:21rather to the dealers and buy for
23:23yourselves who buys oil in the middle of
23:26the night you’ll note they can offer no
23:29help when the day of judgment comes I
23:32cannot help you I can help you today but
23:36I cannot help you on the day of judgment
23:38on the day of judgment I will be
23:40otherwise occupied right that’s kind of
23:42the point and so will you and so your
23:44neighbors who are dead in trespasses and
23:47sins Like These Foolish virgins that
23:49they cannot be helped by you on that day
23:51this is the day when we help them so
23:55since we cannot there will not be enough
23:57for us and for you you go rather to the
23:58dealers and buy some for yourselves and
24:01so while they were going foolish virgins
24:03looking for oil that they can purchase
24:05in the middle of the night this is
24:06getting foolish by the minute is that a
24:08word and they were going to buy then the
24:12bridegroom came and those who were ready
24:14went in with him to the marriage feast
24:17and then the door was shut the
24:22end H and here’s where we have to note
24:26this if you do not hear the word of God
24:29you are not ready if you will not hear
24:33the words of Christ and the cause of
24:36scripture to repent and the words of
24:39scripture which reveal to us that all of
24:41this that we see is coming to an end
24:45every last bit of it in fact all of the
24:48schemes of human governments and peoples
24:50and conspiracy people and all this kind
24:52of stuff it’s all going to come crashing
24:54down in one cataclysmic day
24:58why are you investing so much time and
25:01effort on stuff that is going to
25:04burn right it’s because you’re only
25:07thinking of the temporal and so we must
25:09understand this as lutherans we do not
25:12believe in once saved always saved we
25:16recognize that The Temptations of the
25:18devil the world and our own s sinful
25:22flesh can lead us back into darkness
25:26that we can forfeit this great faith and
25:28salvation that we have all you’ve got to
25:31do is throw Jesus and Chuck him behind
25:33you stop coming to church stop hearing
25:36the word stop hearing that your sins are
25:39forgiven stop eating the body and blood
25:41of Christ given and shed for the
25:42Forgiveness of your sins and over a
25:44short amount of time like the weeds in
25:47my
25:48yard right you’ll go back to being wild
25:52and
25:53foolish and so these are words of wisdom
25:55from Christ in a sense of a warning
25:58right
26:00so the door was shut afterwards the
26:04other virgins came also saying Lord Lord
26:06open to us he answered truly I I say to
26:10you I don’t know you so watch therefore
26:14for you know neither the day or the hour
26:18so be assured of
26:20this and this fact only that Christ has
26:25bled and died for you and for me
26:28and it is utterly foolish that anybody
26:31ends up in hell it is not God’s will
26:34that any should perish and any who do it
26:37is their fault it is their foolishness
26:39that brought them to the brink and then
26:42threw them into the pit of
26:44disaster which awaits everybody who
26:47persists in sin and unbelief so brothers
26:49and sisters rejoice in this fact that
26:52Christ has bled and died for you that
26:53he’s saved you that he’s given you his
26:55holy spirit that he’s forgiven you of
26:57all of your trespasses and sins and he
27:00continues to sustain us now with the
27:03faith that he has given us through the
27:06word through the sacraments so that we
27:08would not hear those horrible words
27:12depart from me I never knew you instead
27:15we will hear as we hear in next week’s
27:17gospel well done good and faithful
27:19servant enter into the joy of your
27:22master all of this is by grace through
27:25faith by the husband who leves loved his
27:28wife so much that he laid down his life
27:30for her in the name of Jesus
27:37Amen
