| 1:32 | Hill Country of Judea and all who heard |
| 1:35 | them laid them up in their hearts saying |
| 1:36 | what then will this child be for the |
| 1:39 | hand of the Lord was with him and his |
| 1:42 | father Zechariah filled with the Holy |
| 1:44 | Spirit |
| 1:46 | and prophesied saying blessed be the |
| 1:50 | Lord God of Israel |
| 1:51 | for he has visited and redeemed his |
| 1:54 | people and has raised up a horn of |
| 1:57 | salvation for us in the house of a |
| 2:00 | servant David as he spoke by the mouth |
| 2:03 | of his holy prophets from of old that we |
| 2:06 | should be saved from our enemies and |
| 2:09 | from the hand of all who hate us to show |
| 2:12 | the mercy promised to our fathers and to |
| 2:15 | remember His Holy Covenant the oath that |
| 2:18 | he swore to Our Father Abraham to grant |
| 2:21 | us that we being delivered from the hand |
| 2:23 | of our enemies might serve him without |
| 2:25 | fear and Holiness and righteousness |
| 2:28 | before him all of our days |
| 2:30 | and you child will be called the prophet |
| 2:34 | of the most high and you will go before |
| 2:36 | the Lord to prepare his ways to give |
| 2:39 | knowledge of Salvation to his people in |
| 2:41 | the Forgiveness of their sins because of |
| 2:44 | the tender mercy of our God whereby the |
| 2:46 | sunrise shall visit us from on high to |
| 2:49 | give light to those who sit in darkness |
| 2:51 | and in the shadow of death to guide our |
| 2:54 | feet into the way of peace and the child |
| 2:57 | grew and became strong in spirit and he |
| 3:00 | was in the wilderness until the day of |
| 3:03 | his public appearance to Israel |
| 3:06 | in the name of Jesus |
| 3:09 | I wonder as I wander out under the sky |
| 3:14 | how Jesus the Savior did come for to die |
| 3:19 | for poor wonderful word next ornery |
| 3:23 | people |
| 3:24 | like you |
| 3:26 | and like I |
| 3:29 | so our text tonight this final midweek |
| 3:33 | service of Advent |
| 3:35 | as we anticipate the arrival the birth |
| 3:38 | of our King |
| 3:40 | it’s a lot about wondering |
| 3:43 | wondering what is going on |
| 3:46 | so we return to Our Gospel text |
| 3:49 | and where we last Saw Zechariah |
| 3:53 | Zachariah |
| 3:55 | was well in the temple |
| 3:57 | the angel Gabriel appeared to him to let |
| 3:59 | him know that his prayers prayers that |
| 4:02 | he had prayed decades earlier had been |
| 4:05 | heard by God and that his wife Elizabeth |
| 4:07 | would bear a son |
| 4:10 | Zechariah not exactly filled with faith |
| 4:12 | although terrified at the presence of |
| 4:14 | this angel |
| 4:16 | doubted |
| 4:18 | How Will I Know This Be I’m old my |
| 4:21 | wife’s old she’s been through menopause |
| 4:22 | we did the hot flash thing already |
| 4:26 | and Gabriel incensed |
| 4:28 | says fine |
| 4:30 | it’s going to happen because God never |
| 4:32 | lies |
| 4:33 | your lack of faith doesn’t nullify God’s |
| 4:36 | word |
| 4:37 | but I’m going to shut your mouth make it |
| 4:39 | so you can’t talk |
| 4:42 | and he went on now |
| 4:44 | for the better part of a year nine |
| 4:47 | months |
| 4:48 | without being able to say a word there’s |
| 4:50 | some wonderfully funny things in this |
| 4:53 | text as well here’s what it says the |
| 4:55 | time came for Elizabeth to give birth |
| 4:57 | she bore a son |
| 5:02 | old lady giving birth her neighbors and |
| 5:05 | her relatives heard and watched The |
| 5:07 | Watch what it says that the Lord had |
| 5:09 | shown great Mercy to her |
| 5:12 | and that’s what that was Mercy |
| 5:15 | children are a blessing from God and it |
| 5:17 | was a curse for her to go decade after |
| 5:20 | decade after decade not able to have a |
| 5:23 | child |
| 5:23 | and now God has shown great Mercy to her |
| 5:27 | and they rejoiced with her |
| 5:30 | and on the eighth day they came to |
| 5:33 | circumcise the child now you got to pay |
| 5:36 | attention to Biblical numbers brightly |
| 5:39 | so there’s a lot of people who do some |
| 5:40 | quacky things with them but if you think |
| 5:43 | of it this way |
| 5:44 | how many days did it take for God to |
| 5:47 | create the heavens and the Earth |
| 5:49 | six so the person who says to you God |
| 5:52 | created the heavens and the Earth in |
| 5:54 | seven days is lying he did it in six |
| 5:57 | he rested on the seventh and so in |
| 6:00 | biblical numerology which is a terrible |
| 6:03 | way of putting it if I think about that |
| 6:04 | in the Biblical numbers seven is a |
| 6:07 | complete number |
| 6:08 | but children are circumcised on the |
| 6:11 | Eighth Day Jesus is raised from the |
| 6:14 | grave on the eighth day |
| 6:16 | eighth day is the first day of the new |
| 6:20 | creation |
| 6:21 | and so circumcision which is a type and |
| 6:24 | Shadow of baptism |
| 6:27 | promises are made and physically there’s |
| 6:30 | a cutting off of the Flesh and when we |
| 6:33 | are baptized there’s a cutting off of |
| 6:36 | the flesh inside of our hearts by the |
| 6:38 | Hands of Christ and so on the eighth day |
| 6:40 | they came to circumcise the child they |
| 6:43 | would have called him Zachariah after |
| 6:46 | his father and I want to know who the |
| 6:48 | they is there |
| 6:49 | now these are some very ornery people |
| 6:53 | these are some pretty pushy relatives I |
| 6:58 | mean in my family my mother |
| 7:01 | my brother my sister-in-law none of my |
| 7:05 | cousins none of them had any authority |
| 7:07 | to name any of my children so I want to |
| 7:09 | know who this they is they would have |
| 7:12 | named him Zachariah |
| 7:14 | but his mother answered no he shall be |
| 7:18 | called John |
| 7:20 | and you can just see them saying |
| 7:23 | listen woman you don’t know what you’re |
| 7:25 | talking about let’s talk to the man but |
| 7:27 | we can’t and watch what it says |
| 7:30 | so they said there are none of your |
| 7:32 | relatives is called by this name so they |
| 7:34 | made signs to his father he can hear |
| 7:36 | just fine okay he’s having a problem |
| 7:40 | talking so you can almost see them going |
| 7:45 | Zachariah what are we named |
| 7:50 | it’s so wrong on so many levels right |
| 7:55 | so they made signs to his father |
| 7:57 | inquiring what he wanted to be called |
| 8:00 | and he asked for a writing tablet and he |
| 8:03 | wrote his name is John vindicating his |
| 8:07 | wife and they all wondered |
| 8:09 | and there’s the word wondered wondered |
| 8:13 | and immediately his mouth was opened his |
| 8:17 | tongue loosed |
| 8:19 | and he spoke |
| 8:21 | not cursing God blessing him |
| 8:24 | beer came on all their neighbors |
| 8:28 | and all these things were talked about |
| 8:30 | through all the Hill Country of Judea |
| 8:32 | now this makes perfect sense okay the |
| 8:34 | Hill Country Judea is not a big town |
| 8:36 | it’s a small town it’s rural we know how |
| 8:39 | news travels so fast out of the rural |
| 8:41 | areas does it not right so the news |
| 8:44 | spread Elizabeth gave birth |
| 8:47 | we wanted to name him Zechariah |
| 8:50 | she wanted to name him John |
| 8:52 | and then we don’t know what happened |
| 8:54 | what it came over Zechariah but he sided |
| 8:57 | with her and you could just see the |
| 9:00 | scuttlebutt just |
| 9:01 | right throughout the neighborhood right |
| 9:03 | but they’re all wondering what |
| 9:05 | that’s all mean |
| 9:08 | and all these things were talked about |
| 9:10 | through all the Hill Country GD all who |
| 9:12 | heard them laid them up in their hearts |
| 9:14 | saying what then will this child be |
| 9:18 | clearly God’s hand is on him |
| 9:21 | for the hand of the Lord was with him |
| 9:23 | they could all see it |
| 9:25 | and then as Zechariah his father filled |
| 9:28 | with the Holy Spirit he prophesied |
| 9:30 | this is another one of the wonderful |
| 9:33 | section of scripture one of the few |
| 9:35 | times where we get songs |
| 9:38 | spoken prophetically in a historical |
| 9:41 | narrative Blessed Be |
| 9:45 | the Lord God |
| 9:47 | Yahweh Elohim |
| 9:52 | the Lord God of Israel |
| 9:55 | he is visited and he has redeemed his |
| 9:58 | people |
| 10:00 | and this |
| 10:02 | phrase takes you back to the Exodus |
| 10:06 | visited his people pay attention to |
| 10:09 | God’s visitations his visitations always |
| 10:13 | go really well for his people his |
| 10:16 | visitations also go very poorly for his |
| 10:19 | enemies |
| 10:21 | Exodus chapter 4 verse 27 just by way of |
| 10:25 | reminder cross reference |
| 10:27 | he always said to Aaron go into the |
| 10:29 | Wilderness to meet Moses see Moses has |
| 10:32 | been commissioned he’s on his way back |
| 10:34 | to Egypt so he went and met him at the |
| 10:36 | Mountain of God kissed him Moses told |
| 10:37 | Aaron all the words of the Lord with |
| 10:39 | which he had sent him to speak and all |
| 10:41 | the signs that he had commanded him to |
| 10:43 | do and then Moses and Aaron went and |
| 10:45 | gathered together all the Elders of the |
| 10:48 | people of Israel |
| 10:50 | so you remember the burning bush it just |
| 10:51 | happened a chapter earlier God |
| 10:53 | commissioning Moses and Moses saying |
| 10:56 | please pick somebody else please please |
| 11:01 | and that’s not how it goes |
| 11:03 | so |
| 11:05 | now fully commissioned ordained |
| 11:08 | set apart by God he and Aaron they go |
| 11:11 | and the first people they talk to are |
| 11:13 | the people of Israel |
| 11:15 | and Aaron spoke all the words that the |
| 11:17 | Lord had spoken in Moses did the signs |
| 11:19 | inside of the people |
| 11:22 | and the people believed and when they |
| 11:25 | heard that the Lord had visited the |
| 11:27 | people of Israel |
| 11:29 | and that he had seen their affliction |
| 11:32 | they bowed their heads and they |
| 11:34 | worshiped |
| 11:36 | and so Zechariah here his song hearkens |
| 11:40 | back to this time in Israel Blessed Be |
| 11:43 | Yahweh ellori Elohim |
| 11:46 | of Israel for he has visited and |
| 11:49 | redeemed his people he’s visited us he’s |
| 11:52 | seen our Affliction he has seen us |
| 11:55 | laboring under the curse |
| 11:58 | next phrase |
| 12:00 | he raised up a horn of salvation for us |
| 12:04 | in the house of his servant David a |
| 12:07 | little bit of a tricky phrase he’s |
| 12:09 | raised up a horn of salvation for us how |
| 12:12 | beneficial are horns of Salvation what |
| 12:14 | exactly is this talking about well I |
| 12:17 | think you could compare this if you |
| 12:19 | would to the negative example when you |
| 12:21 | read like in Daniel chapter 7 |
| 12:25 | or in the Book of Revelation the dragon |
| 12:28 | with the horns the horns are Mighty ones |
| 12:32 | they’re like kings and the ultimate Evil |
| 12:35 | one is this horn that raises up and just |
| 12:39 | literally just takes apart three other |
| 12:42 | horns read Daniel seven you’ll see it |
| 12:44 | there and so a horn is a king a horn is |
| 12:47 | it’s a it’s a metaphorical statement of |
| 12:50 | one who is mighty and this would make |
| 12:52 | perfect sense in a culture where there |
| 12:54 | are rams and sheep and things like that |
| 12:57 | the mighty mighty goats and Rams they |
| 13:01 | have horns so that’s the picture he is |
| 13:05 | raised up for us a horn of Salvation and |
| 13:09 | the house of a servant David as he spoke |
| 13:12 | by the mouth of his holy prophets from |
| 13:14 | of old that we should be saved from our |
| 13:17 | enemies and from the hand of all who |
| 13:21 | hate us |
| 13:23 | now we as Christians we understand that |
| 13:26 | our battle is not against flesh and |
| 13:28 | blood |
| 13:29 | it’s always for flesh and blood |
| 13:32 | our battle is well against the demons |
| 13:36 | the Devil Himself |
| 13:38 | in his horde |
| 13:40 | he’s an enemy we do not see with our own |
| 13:43 | eyes but oftentimes we see his hand upon |
| 13:47 | those who are neighbors our relatives or |
| 13:51 | friends or government officials |
| 13:55 | they are doing the work of their father |
| 13:57 | the devil and have made themselves our |
| 14:00 | enemies |
| 14:01 | and made it their goal in life |
| 14:05 | to oppress us |
| 14:07 | to hate us |
| 14:08 | to make our lives miserable |
| 14:11 | and so the idea then here is that they |
| 14:15 | are doing the work of our Ultimate Enemy |
| 14:17 | the one who we pray in the Lord’s Prayer |
| 14:19 | to Deliver Us from the evil one |
| 14:23 | they the evil one the devil is truly our |
| 14:25 | enemy and so God has raised up a horn of |
| 14:28 | Salvation to set us free and the holy |
| 14:31 | prophets of old spoke that we would be |
| 14:33 | saved from our enemies |
| 14:35 | namely the devil |
| 14:37 | to show the mercy promised to our |
| 14:39 | fathers |
| 14:41 | and to remember His Holy Covenant the |
| 14:43 | oath that he swore to Our Father Abraham |
| 14:45 | Now isn’t this interesting Zechariah |
| 14:48 | prophesying under the junction of the |
| 14:50 | Holy Spirit |
| 14:51 | notes that the Covenant that God has |
| 14:54 | made is not the Covenant of Mount Sinai |
| 14:58 | it is not the Covenant of the Thou shalt |
| 15:00 | not |
| 15:02 | it’s the Covenant of the promised Seed |
| 15:05 | of Abraham |
| 15:06 | in whom all the world will be blessed |
| 15:09 | show Mercy |
| 15:12 | to show Mercy |
| 15:14 | and that’s what we need |
| 15:17 | so that we being delivered from the hand |
| 15:21 | of our enemies might serve god without |
| 15:26 | fear |
| 15:28 | what kind of fear is being talked about |
| 15:30 | here serve god without fear |
| 15:33 | is that saying oh well I lived in the |
| 15:36 | United States we have freedom of |
| 15:38 | religion so I can serve the god of my |
| 15:41 | choice without fear |
| 15:43 | nope that’s not what’s being talked |
| 15:45 | about here |
| 15:46 | to serve god without fear is to serve |
| 15:50 | God knowing that you are forgiven |
| 15:54 | knowing that God himself has been |
| 15:57 | merciful and you’ll notice the Salvation |
| 16:00 | language salvation Mercy |
| 16:04 | and |
| 16:05 | promise |
| 16:07 | and Grace |
| 16:09 | to be able to serve god without fear is |
| 16:12 | to be able to say |
| 16:14 | God’s Wrath has been put away and does |
| 16:19 | not burn hot against me not because I |
| 16:23 | have earned my salvation not because I |
| 16:25 | have |
| 16:26 | meritoriously worked and earned the wage |
| 16:29 | from God so that he says you know what |
| 16:31 | you’re pretty good after all |
| 16:34 | no |
| 16:35 | it’s when we hear |
| 16:38 | that God says I love you |
| 16:41 | and I forgive you |
| 16:43 | only then can we serve him without fear |
| 16:46 | and the person who does not understand |
| 16:49 | salvation by grace through faith because |
| 16:54 | of God’s mercy and that he has visited |
| 16:57 | us to set us free to redeem us believes |
| 17:02 | that somehow they have got to placate |
| 17:05 | the wrath of God by doing good things |
| 17:11 | and that person |
| 17:13 | well |
| 17:14 | they’re under a curse |
| 17:17 | because they’re constantly serving God |
| 17:21 | in fear |
| 17:23 | in the fear that if I don’t do these |
| 17:26 | things |
| 17:28 | then I will perish eternally |
| 17:31 | if I don’t do these things and continue |
| 17:34 | to do them then God is going to cast me |
| 17:37 | into the Lake of Fire |
| 17:40 | this is no way to do your good works |
| 17:44 | and you cannot serve god without fear |
| 17:47 | in that scheme |
| 17:49 | only through God’s mercy only through |
| 17:51 | his grace only because he has visited us |
| 17:55 | has raised up a horn of salvation for us |
| 17:57 | has redeemed us as he promised |
| 18:02 | shown us Mercy |
| 18:04 | can we now serve him without fear |
| 18:07 | in holiness |
| 18:09 | and righteousness before him all of our |
| 18:11 | days |
| 18:12 | all of our days well how many days do we |
| 18:16 | have |
| 18:18 | it’s a trick question if you think about |
| 18:20 | it how many days do we have as |
| 18:22 | Christians |
| 18:25 | I’ve been around for |
| 18:27 | 40 years and years |
| 18:30 | and if the Lord tarries I might make it |
| 18:32 | until I’m your 80s whatever right you |
| 18:36 | never know maybe 90 if I give up carbs |
| 18:42 | how many days do I have |
| 18:46 | you’re counting them wrong |
| 18:50 | you’re counting them wrong |
| 18:54 | you have days without end |
| 19:00 | you |
| 19:03 | have been forgiven |
| 19:04 | you already possess |
| 19:07 | eternal life what is eternal life like |
| 19:12 | it’s like today |
| 19:15 | tomorrow it’ll change |
| 19:17 | where there will be no more evil |
| 19:20 | but we will serve god without fear and |
| 19:23 | Holiness because we have been made holy |
| 19:25 | in righteousness because we’ve been |
| 19:26 | clothed with righteousness of God before |
| 19:29 | him we will see him face to face all of |
| 19:32 | our days how many are there |
| 19:37 | are days without end |
| 19:39 | from the ages into the ages |
| 19:42 | the apostles right |
| 19:44 | sounds like a long time |
| 19:47 | indeed it is |
| 19:51 | you have no less days |
| 19:54 | now |
| 19:55 | then when you’ve begun |
| 19:59 | and so you child John the Baptist |
| 20:03 | you’ll be called the prophet of the most |
| 20:05 | high and indeed he was the last of them |
| 20:07 | you will go before the Lord to prepare |
| 20:10 | his ways and indeed he did and his |
| 20:12 | message was repent |
| 20:14 | and John the Baptist gave knowledge of |
| 20:16 | Salvation to God’s people |
| 20:19 | in the forgiveness of their sins |
| 20:23 | to be forgiven is to be saved or as |
| 20:28 | David writes in Psalm 32 blessed is he |
| 20:32 | whose Lawless Deeds are forgiven blessed |
| 20:36 | is the one to whom the Lord does not |
| 20:37 | impute |
| 20:39 | wickedness |
| 20:40 | you are saved if you are forgiven |
| 20:43 | to give knowledge of Salvation to his |
| 20:45 | people in the Forgiveness of their sins |
| 20:47 | because of the tender mercy of our God |
| 20:53 | and if it were not written for us there |
| 20:55 | we would hardly believe it was true |
| 20:58 | because we had the law written on our |
| 21:00 | hearts and the law every time we screw |
| 21:03 | up says you’ve screwed up |
| 21:04 | you’ve messed up |
| 21:06 | and are thinking about God as a result |
| 21:09 | of his loss screaming in our faces that |
| 21:11 | we have failed once again is that God is |
| 21:14 | somehow up there arms folded flames in |
| 21:19 | the eyes getting brighter and redder and |
| 21:22 | oh boy we’re in trouble he’s starting to |
| 21:24 | really get mad now he’s going to come |
| 21:25 | unglued and once he does oh we’re toast |
| 21:30 | no this says |
| 21:33 | to give knowledge of Salvation to his |
| 21:35 | people and the Forgiveness of their sins |
| 21:37 | because of the tender mercy of our God |
| 21:41 | it’s not just Mercy |
| 21:44 | tender Mercy |
| 21:46 | and it’s tender Mercy to you |
| 21:50 | your God |
| 21:52 | loves you he’s tender |
| 21:56 | and merciful to you |
| 21:59 | whereby the sun sunrise shall visit us |
| 22:03 | from on high to give light to those who |
| 22:06 | sit in darkness and in the shadow of |
| 22:09 | death |
| 22:10 | to guide our feet into the way of peace |
| 22:13 | the picture is us |
| 22:15 | completely suffering and languishing in |
| 22:18 | the dark |
| 22:21 | and then all of a sudden |
| 22:23 | the sun rise |
| 22:26 | appears |
| 22:28 | and now we can see where we are |
| 22:31 | and we can walk out now of the shadow of |
| 22:35 | death |
| 22:36 | and find the right path into the way of |
| 22:40 | peace |
| 22:41 | we will hear from the Angels very |
| 22:45 | shortly |
| 22:47 | the announcement of the birth of our |
| 22:49 | savior |
| 22:51 | peace |
| 22:54 | peace |
| 22:56 | seems like this whole life of ours |
| 23:00 | is one battle after another |
| 23:06 | battle against our own sin and battle |
| 23:09 | against our neighbors battle against our |
| 23:11 | husband battle against our wife battle |
| 23:13 | against right |
| 23:16 | peace seems to be the thing that none of |
| 23:19 | us has read the news I wouldn’t call |
| 23:22 | 2016 the year of political peace |
| 23:28 | still isn’t |
| 23:34 | but God is guiding us through the valley |
| 23:36 | of the shadow of death |
| 23:38 | into the way of true peace and that |
| 23:42 | peace begins with God |
| 23:45 | and then flows from God |
| 23:47 | to us to our neighbors |
| 23:51 | what a wonderful prophecy what |
| 23:55 | a tantalizing glimpse |
| 23:58 | into |
| 23:59 | present and in the future and to show us |
| 24:03 | the true nature and heart of God |
| 24:07 | as tender forgiving merciful visiting |
| 24:11 | his people rescuing redeeming saving all |
| 24:15 | of the words are so hope filled and this |
| 24:20 | is no pipe dream |
| 24:22 | because this is truly how God is |
| 24:26 | so I wonder as I wander |
| 24:29 | out under the sky |
| 24:31 | I can hear from the snow |
| 24:34 | squishing underneath my feet |
| 24:36 | how is it that Jesus the Savior did come |
| 24:39 | for to die |
| 24:41 | for poor ornery people |
| 24:44 | like me |
| 24:47 | and like you |
| 24:49 | I wonder |
| 24:52 | and John the Baptist grew became strong |
| 24:55 | in spirit |
| 24:56 | and he was in the wilderness into the |
| 24:58 | day of his public appearance to Israel |
| 25:02 | Wonder indeed |
| 25:04 | it’s the Talk of the Town |
| 25:07 | something’s afoot the hand of God is |
| 25:10 | visibly present |
| 25:13 | what does it all mean |
| 25:16 | it means salvation |
| 25:19 | it means peace |
| 25:22 | it means the end of the curse |
| 25:26 | and days without end |
| 25:29 | oh |
| 25:31 | dare we have such hope |
| 25:34 | dare we |
| 25:38 | yes |
