0:36	and Jesus full of the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan was led by the spirit in the wilderness
0:43	for 40 days being tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and
0:49	when they were ended he was hungry this the devil said to him if you are the Son of God command this
0:56	Stone to become bread and Jesus answered him it is written man shall not live by bread alone
1:02	so the devil took him up showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time and said to him to you I will give
1:09	all this Authority and their Glory for it has been delivered to me
1:14	and I give it to whom I will if you then will worship me it will all
1:20	be yours and Jesus answered him it is written you shall Worship the Lord your God and him
1:26	only shall you serve so he took him to Jerusalem set him on the Pinnacle of the temple and said to
1:32	him if you are the Son of God throw yourself down from here for it is written he will command his angels
1:39	concerning you to guard you and on their hands they will bear you up lest you strike your foot against a stone
1:45	and Jesus answered him it is said You shall not put the Lord your God to the test and when the devil had ended every
1:52	Temptation he departed from him until an opportune time in the name of Jesus
1:59	so what do you think about God what do you think about him do you think he’s kind loving
2:06	do you think he’s vindictive do you think he’s out to get you do you worry about thinking about well
2:14	standing before him on the day of judgment do you believe him when he says that you
2:22	are forgiven do you believe his word or do you doubt
2:29	his word and think well maybe God is up to no good I better hedge my bets
2:35	there’s a story they tell in the history books about when the gospel first came
2:40	to regions like Norway you know they worship the Norse gods
2:45	right Thor and Odin right well the first generation of those who were Christians
2:53	discipled in the name of Jesus Christ and taught the saving gospel they weren’t exactly sure if Jesus really was
3:01	God or not or if really they could be forgiven and so they hedged their bets and to this day you can find gravestones
3:08	from that period there in Norway where on the one side you have the person
3:15	describing their belief in faith in Christ but on the other side of the gravestone you have a little prayer to
3:20	Thor or to Odin they were hedging their bets right are you hedging your bets
3:27	you’re thinking well you know the salvation by grace thing sounds a little too good to be true so I better make
3:35	sure that I’ve racked up some brownie points with God so that if Jesus’s death
3:41	on the cross doesn’t quite cover everything well then I can put my good works forward and then we can we can
3:47	make up the difference all right what do you think you think God is true
3:55	do you believe him or do you doubt his word
4:00	well that’s what our text is about today it’s a temptation of Christ what was he
4:06	being tempted to do well in order to answer that question we’re going to have to take a look at context
4:16	we’re gonna have to take a look at the immediate context in the chapter before and we’re also going to have to spend a
4:23	little bit of time in the Old Testament so if you would grab your Pew Bible you can follow along we’re going to be in
4:29	Luke Chapter 3. I’m going to start at verse 15 and we’re going to look at the immediate context and if you want to
4:35	look ahead you know to where we’re going to go in the Old Testament context you can put a finger in the Book of Numbers
4:41	Chapter 13 starting at verse 1. so if you want to look ahead you can all
4:47	right so here’s our immediate context and this is the story in the account of
4:53	the baptism of Jesus I’ll start at verse 15 in chapter 3. as the people were in
4:58	expectation and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ you could say the
5:04	Messiah because Christos and messiach they mean the same thing that means the anointed one
5:10	thinking that he might be the Christ but John answered them all saying I baptize you with water but he who is mightier
5:16	than I is coming the strap of who sandals I am not worthy to untie he Jesus he’s going to baptize you with
5:24	the Holy Spirit and fire his winnowing Fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat
5:30	into his barn but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire
5:35	so with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people but
5:40	Herod the tetrarch who have been reproved by him for herodias his brother’s wife and for all the evil
5:47	things that Herod had done added this to them all he locked up John in prison oh look at
5:54	that what kind of man of God would tell a politician that he’s sinful
6:01	sorry that’s a different sermon I’ll have to save that one for later
6:06	now when all were baptized all the people were baptized and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying now
6:13	listen to this the heavens were opened the Holy Spirit descended on him in
6:19	bodily form like a dove and a voice Came From Heaven here’s the
6:25	word of God you are my beloved Son with you I am well pleased
6:33	that is the last verse before the beginning of our gospel text this morning and Our Gospel text then begins
6:39	with these words and Jesus full of the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led by the spirit Into the
6:45	Wilderness for 40 days hugely important number signaling something going on here
6:50	has something to do with the Old Testament and being tempted by the devil he ate nothing during those days and
6:57	when they were ended he was hungry and the devil said to him here are the words
7:02	if you are the son of God you can almost see the devil kind of
7:08	talking like this hey Jesus you know I know you heard that voice from heaven and I know that voice
7:14	said you’re the Son of God but do you really think that voice was telling you the truth you might want to check this
7:19	out Jesus you might want to see if that’s really the case I mean because that’s kind of a big title you know Son of God who Do You Think You Are the
7:26	Messiah or something so you know if you are the Son of God and I’m not saying that you’re not Jesus everybody knows
7:31	you’ve got to be the Son of God but I I’m just saying you know you might have some doubts in your mind Jesus about that word that you’ve heard from God so
7:37	if you are the Son of God and I know how hungry you are command this Stone to
7:42	become bread what’s the devil doing he’s attacking the word of God
7:52	I’ve said it before I’ll say it again the Devil is a one-trick pony he does the same thing every time he is
8:00	predictable first attack against our parents Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden over the
8:06	words out of his mouth did God really say you shall not eat from any tree in the
8:12	garden did God really say he’s going right after the word of God that’s what he does he goes right after
8:20	it gets you to doubt it get you to think well maybe God’s a liar
8:29	maybe God well he says things he doesn’t mean maybe God really is out to get us
8:36	maybe God’s holding out on us
8:42	who’s the liar though Jesus says that when the devil speaks
8:48	he’s lying because lying is his native tongue some of you know how to speak Norwegian others of you English some of
8:56	you might know some other languages the devil he speak lies that’s his native language right so he’s coming after
9:03	Jesus in the wilderness tempting him in the exact same way that Adam and Eve
9:09	were tempted and that didn’t go so well for Adam and Eve but also we see that Jesus is in the wilderness
9:16	40 days there was another time in which Israel was in the
9:23	wilderness being tempted to doubt God’s word
9:29	and they did not pass the Temptation I think it’s important for us to take a look back now we’re in Numbers Chapter
9:34	13. now verse Chapter 13 Verse 1. I want you to see the connection here here Jesus is
9:41	Israel squished down into one person being tempted in the same way that
9:46	Israel was tempted in the wilderness here’s what it says in numbers 13 verse 1.
9:51	the Lord Yahweh spoke to Moses saying send men to spy out the land of Canaan
9:58	which I am giving to the people of Israel from each tribe of their fathers
10:03	you shall send a man everyone a chief among them so Moses
10:09	sent them from the Wilderness of Quran according to the command of the Lord now I want you to look back at verse 1.
10:17	spy out the land of Canaan here are the important words which I am
10:23	giving to the people of Israel
10:28	giving it’s a gift God’s intention for Israel is good
10:37	his love for them and his promises are irrevocable he has promised them to give
10:44	the land of Israel this is the word of God so now the question is will Israel
10:50	believe that God is going to give them the Promised Land
10:56	or are they not yes or no it’s really that simple so we
11:02	got the story of The Twelve spies and you all know how the song goes right 12 men went to spy on Canaan ten were
11:08	bad and two were good what did they see when they spied on Kanan ten were bad and two were good some saw giants big
11:13	and tall some saw grapes and clusters fall some saw God rule over all ten were
11:19	bad and two were good you know that song that they teach that here in Sunday School
11:24	all right we have to fix that all right have you all singing that before you know it
11:29	okay but it’s an important thing the 10 10 of these spies
11:37	they did not believe God when God said I’m going to give and Watch What Happens so they’re in the wilderness this is a
11:43	temptation we’ll start now at verse 17. I won’t read the Roll Call of the elders who go
11:49	on the spy mission but note that Joshua and Caleb are on the mission as well
11:54	Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them go up into the negeb go up into the Hill Country and
12:01	see what the land is whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak
12:07	whether they are few or many whether the land they dwell in is good or bad and
12:13	whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds and whether the land is Rich or poor and whether there
12:19	are trees in it or not be of good courage bring some of the fruit of the land now the time was the season of the
12:26	first ripe Grace so they went out and they spied out the
12:32	land from the Wilderness of Zinn to rahob near Lebo hamath they went up into
12:38	the negeb and came to Hebron ahamon and talmud the descendants of anak were
12:45	there Hebron was built seven years before zoan and Egypt and they came to the valley of ashkol and cut down from
12:52	there a branch with a single cluster of grapes and They carried it on a pole between two of them they also brought
13:00	some pomegranates and figs that place was called the valley of ashkel because of the cluster that the people of Israel
13:06	cut down from there at the end of the 40 days they returned from spying out the land and they came to Moses and Aaron
13:12	and all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of puranic Kadesh they brought back word to them
13:19	and all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land and they told him we came to the land to
13:27	which you sent us it flows with milk and honey and this is its fruit however the people who dwell in the land
13:34	are strong and the cities are fortified and very large and besides we saw the descendants
13:41	of anat there in the amalekites dwell in the land of the negeb the Hittites the jebusites and the amorites dwell in the
13:47	Hill Country and the Canaanites dwell in the sea and along the Jordan this is kind of like The Wizard of Oz
13:54	lions and tigers and bears oh my amalekites and Canaanites and you know
13:59	Hittites oh my right but here’s the problem
14:06	they have their eye on those people and their deduction is God
14:13	is lying to us he has no intention of giving us this land do you see who’s in
14:18	there so Watch What Happens
14:24	but Caleb one of the men who does trust the word of the Lord he quieted the people before
14:30	Moses and said let us go up once and occupy it for we are able to overcome it
14:36	and then the men who had gone up with him said we’re not able to go up against the people they are stronger than we are
14:43	so they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had
14:48	spied out saying the land through which we have gone out to spy it’s a land that
14:53	devours its inhabitants and all the people we saw and they’re aware of great height and there we saw the Nephilim the
14:59	son of anarch who came from the Nephilim we seem to ourselves like Grasshoppers and so we seem to them
15:10	did God really say
15:16	I will give you that land yeah he did
15:23	and he meant it he truly did but Watch What Happens now
15:30	they don’t believe this word from God that he intended to give them the land of Israel
15:36	so all the congregation they raised a loud cry and the people wept that night and
15:44	all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron and the whole congregation said them oh wood that we
15:50	had died in the land of Egypt or would that we had died in this Wilderness why is the Lord bringing us into this land
15:57	to Fall by the sword our wives our little ones will become a prey would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt
16:03	and they said to one another let us choose a leader go back to Egypt
16:11	this is demonic he says absolutely demonic
16:17	they are accusing God of evil of lying to them
16:24	purposely lying to them that God’s plan the entire time was to take the children
16:29	of Israel out of slavery from Egypt bring him into the Wilderness and then have them slaughtered like pigs
16:39	that’s what they believed because they didn’t
16:45	believe the word of God they failed this temptation so then Moses and Aaron they fell on
16:52	their faces before all the Assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel Joshua the son of nun and Caleb the son
16:58	of jeffuna who were among those who had spied out the land they tore their clothes and said to the congregation of
17:04	the people of Israel the land which we pass through to spy out is an exceedingly good land
17:09	if the Lord Delights in us he will bring us into this land and here’s the word
17:15	give it to us notice these men believe God at his word
17:23	they don’t believe God is evil they don’t believe that God caused all
17:28	the ten plagues to fall on Egypt only to bring them into the Wilderness and slaughter them they refuse to
17:34	believe that when the Destroyer passed through Egypt and all of the children of
17:39	Israel whose homes were spared because of the blood of the Lamb over the door
17:44	he saved them from that destruction that he does not intend for them evil but he intends for them good
17:51	they knew and saw the signs they were the ones who passed through Dry ground
17:56	as they passed through the Red Sea and then the armies of Egypt when they tried to do the same they were destroyed by
18:03	God everything that God has done up to this point in word and deed shows his great
18:10	love mercy and compassion for the children of Israel and now these men
18:15	these Ten Men Who despise God’s word have worked up the children of Israel to
18:21	believe that God intends for them evil and this is what happens
18:28	when you do not believe God’s word
18:33	you make God to be the liar rather than the devil but who’s the one who’s lying
18:38	right so now
18:45	we go back to Moses and Aaron he will bring us into this land and he
18:52	will give it to us a land that flows with milk and honey only do not rebel against the Lord do
18:58	not fear the people of the land for they are bred for us their protection is removed from them and the Lord is with
19:06	us do not fear them then all the congregation
19:11	said to the stone with the uh then all the congregations said to the stone with the stones but the glory of the Lord
19:16	appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel and the Lord said to Moses how long will this people
19:21	despise me how long will they not believe in me
19:27	despite in spite of all of the signs that I have done among them I will strike them with pestilence and
19:33	disinherit them and I will make of you a greater a nation greater and mightier than they
19:40	God’s solution I’m just going to slaughter them all I think that’s what I’m going to do so I’m going to go ahead and do it now watch what Moses does
19:48	Moses now intercedes as a priest this is what priests do they pray on behalf of
19:53	people and we are all Kings and Priests keep this in mind scripture is very clear about this you are part of the priesthood of all believers you have the
20:01	ability to stand in the Gap and pray for others so do so it’s your Priestly duty
20:07	to do so but watch how Moses does this Moses is now going to pray and the thing he’s going to pray is to remind God of
20:14	all of the great promises that God made so Moses is going to pray back to God
20:20	God’s own words so Moses said to the Lord all right so the Egyptians they’re going
20:25	to hear of this for you brought this people up in your own in your might from among them and they will tell the
20:31	inhabitants of this land they have heard that you o Yahweh are in the midst of this people for You O Lord are seen face
20:38	to face and your Cloud stands over them and you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of Fire by
20:44	night now if you kill this people as one man then the Nations who have heard of
20:50	your Fame will say well it’s because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give them
20:55	that he has killed them in the wilderness and now please let the power of the Lord be great as you have
21:02	promised here he now quotes God to God where you said the Lord Yahweh is slow
21:09	to anger he’s abounding and steadfast love forgiving iniquity
21:16	and transgression but he will know by no means clear the guilty visit the visiting the iniquity
21:22	of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation so please pardon the iniquity of this
21:29	people according to the greatness of your steadfast love just as you have
21:35	forgiven this people from Egypt until now Moses’s prayer is please Lord don’t give
21:40	them what they deserve but instead give them what you said you said remember
21:46	that time God when I was hiding in the cleft because you had put me in there I said I wanted to see you you face to
21:52	face and you wouldn’t let me see you that way so you caused your glory to pass by as I was hiding in the cleft and
21:57	you held your hand I heard the words that you spoke at that time where you
22:03	said the Lord the Lord slow to anger and abounding and steadfast love and the one who forgives iniquity I heard your words
22:10	Lord you are kind and merciful so now be merciful and kind and pardon and forgive
22:16	the sin of your people this is a prayer oh this is a prayer
22:23	don’t give them what they deserve Lord you are forgiving so forgive
22:28	and watch what the Lord says then the Lord said I have pardoned
22:35	according to your word but Moses didn’t give his own words
22:42	Moses prayed back to God God’s words it’s a lot like the absolution
22:48	yeah when you hear me say those inflammatory words I forgive you all of your sins
22:53	it’s not really me doing it because all I’m doing is doing what God told me to do because the sins I forgive they will
23:00	have already been forgiven the text says so Moses God says to Moses I have
23:05	pardoned according to your word but Moses prayed for pardon according to God’s word so who did the pardoning
23:11	there whose words really it’s going on here his aren’t Moses’s words they’re Gods
23:17	but then he says this truly as I live and as all the Earth shall be filled
23:22	with the glory of the Lord none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in
23:28	the wilderness and yet have put me to test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice shall see the land I swore to
23:36	give to their fathers none of those who despise me shall see it but my servant Caleb because he has a different spirit
23:43	and has followed me fully I will bring into the land into which he went and his descendants shall possess it Joshua and
23:51	Caleb believed the word of the Lord they go into the Promised Land
23:57	because they have faith those who do not believe will never see
24:03	it ever and it’s really sad because here’s if you think about it
24:09	this way the temptation of Jesus because it’s following this 40-day pattern in
24:14	the wilderness this is a kind of our hermeneutical key to getting this
24:19	we see that the promised land is really a type and Shadow of what it is that God is promising all of us and that’s
24:26	eternal life the Forgiveness of our sins the same God who is slow to anger and pardon and
24:33	forgave the children of Israel is the same God who Pardons and forgives us for all of our transgressions right
24:40	and it’s so sad because Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world
24:49	God has promised eternal life for all of humanity
24:55	and it’s only those who believe the word of the Lord and Trust his promises and his Mercy who
25:00	will enter into that Eternal rest so it’s sad and tragic because it is not
25:07	his will that any should perish so we come back now
25:12	to Our Gospel text let’s pay attention to what the devil is doing and we see how the devil operates
25:19	where Israel failed in the wilderness in their Temptation and they didn’t believe the word of God
25:25	Jesus succeeds the devil said to him I have to do this again if you are the
25:31	Son of God I’m not saying that you’re not Jesus but of course you know we got to see if that word that you heard from the Lord is really true if you are the
25:37	Son of God command this Stone to become bread Jesus answered him and watch what he
25:43	does he answers with the word of God he lets God answer of course he is God but that’s a little
25:51	mind-bending we’ll save that for another sermon it is written man shall not live by bread alone
25:59	not in strength didn’t Flex his muscles didn’t pull some ultimate Jujitsu move
26:05	didn’t even miraculously do anything Jesus in his weakened State hasn’t eaten for 40 days tempted in the wilderness
26:12	Temptation tempter comes he just quotes a Bible verse
26:19	funny how that happens so the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a
26:24	moment of time oh yes the devil is capable of giving people dreams and visions
26:31	how do you think he did it in a split second in a moment of time right and he said to him to you I will
26:38	give all this Authority in their glory for it has been delivered to me and I will give it to you whom I will if you
26:45	then will worship me it will be yours man
26:51	that doesn’t tell you how sick the devil is I don’t know what does but Jesus it’s written
26:59	he’ll Worship the Lord your God him only shall you serve
27:05	is Jesus doubting for a second the word of the father you are my beloved Son
27:13	not for a second but that’s what the devil’s trying to get him to do so he took him up to Jerusalem set him
27:18	on the Pinnacle of the temple and he said to him and watch this the devil can quote scripture but he always likes to
27:24	misquote it if you are the Son of God throw yourself down from here for it is
27:29	written he will command his angels concerning you to guard you and on their hands they will bear you up lest you
27:35	strike your foot against a stone so the devil misquotes Psalm 91. but I
27:42	want to point something else out kind of an important thing who does the devil think Psalm 91 is
27:48	about who does the devil think Psalm 91 is
27:55	about does he think it’s about you he thinks it’s about Jesus
28:02	and you know what the devil’s right the devil reading Psalm 91 we read it
28:07	today as you were reading it we sing man this is a great Psalm about Jesus
28:12	you weren’t were you and yet it is about him
28:18	keep that in mind Jesus himself says the scriptures are about him the devil just
28:24	admits it right here so even the devil knows that no point reading yourself into biblical text it’s not about you
28:30	it’s about Jesus and what he’s done for you and so the passage he’s misquoting
28:35	here in uh I think what is this verse 11 and 12 yep verse 11 and 12. watch what
28:42	it says he will command his angels concerning you and here’s the part where the devil omits to guard you in all of your ways
28:50	the devil X’s out those words and then goes on to quote and on their hands they will bear you up lest you strike your
28:56	foot against a stone the devil quoting the word of God omits just a little bit of it in order
29:03	to create the false impression that God’s word promises that if Jesus was an adrenaline junkie and like to throw
29:08	himself off cliffs that the Angels would bear him up and make sure that he never hit the ground and went splat
29:15	but that’s not what the psalm promises it says to guard you in all of your ways
29:20	not in all of your recklessness so Jesus detecting how the devil twists
29:26	God’s word and by the way he still twists God’s word this exact same way to this day through his false prophets his
29:32	false preachers his false teachers right
29:37	Jesus says to him I lost my place
29:48	it is said You shall not put the Lord your God to the test that’s what he says
29:54	and when the devil had ended every Temptation he departed from him until an opportune time
30:01	toe-to-toe Mano Amano with the devil I mean this was the big fight was was it supposed to be the big fight ring
30:07	whenever we have a big boxing match you know you got the trash talking you got the Big commercials be sure to sign in

30:19	versus the devil himself and it’s like a non-event
30:25	because Jesus never once doubted God’s word
30:30	it wasn’t even a fair fight so I asked you at the beginning of the
30:36	sermon what do you think about God what do you think about him you think he’s out to get you
30:44	think his desire is to take your puny little carcass and just flick you into the fires of hell
30:51	is this desire to slaughter you and what is this what do you think about him
30:58	have you considered the signs and wonders that God has shown here we have the Son of God himself
31:07	who goes to the cross and he bleeds and dies for your sins and for mine and on
31:13	the third day he rises from the grave the scriptures say of Jesus he is our Passover Lamb the Passover Lamb who
31:20	takes away the sin of the world we are covered in the blood of the lamb and God promises all those who are in him who
31:27	are washed in his blood they will never perish they have eternal life the God has
31:34	forgiven them out of his great Mercy do you believe this about you do you believe that God intends to
31:41	actually you know give you eternal life
31:46	as a gift or do you think maybe that’s just too
31:51	good to be true maybe God’s like one of those attorneys he’s got out that Lily really tiny small
31:58	print right I’m looking for the fine print here yeah salvation is by grace through faith
32:04	if after you do this that and the other thing right which is it
32:12	are you striving to earn your salvation if you are
32:18	you think God is a liar plain and simple you are just like the ten spies
32:27	oh don’t you understand Pastor rosebro I’ve got this sin it’s huge I did this
32:34	and I’m really ashamed of it if only you knew the things I have done it’s just like the amalekites the
32:41	Hittites the Lions and the Tigers and the Bears God’s not strong enough to save me
32:51	you’ve believed the lies of the devil because God says
32:56	that he gives eternal life as a gift
33:03	s is this not what our epistle text also
33:09	said let me read it again Romans chapter 10 verse 8.
33:15	so what does it say the word is near you in your mouth and in your heart
33:20	that is the word of faith that we Proclaim because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your
33:25	heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved for with the heart One Believes and is
33:32	Justified and with the mouth one confesses in a safe for the scripture says everyone who believes in him will
33:39	not be put to shame are you part of everyone or not
33:47	is God telling you the truth here or not everyone who believes in him will not be
33:54	put to shame for There’s no distinction between Jew and Greek for the same Lord as Lord of all bestowing his riches
34:01	on all who call on him for everyone who calls on the name of
34:07	the Lord will be saved
34:17	do you believe this God doesn’t lie
34:23	the devil does
34:28	so I dare you I do I dare you to believe this
34:34	trust that even you can be saved
34:40	because all everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved
34:46	don’t let the devil say yeah but you don’t qualify
34:52	If Only They knew what you did he’s lying to you
34:57	God says everyone and that includes you
35:03	in the name of Jesus amen [Music]
