0:27A reading from
0:30First Peter chapter 3.
0:33likewise wives be subject to your own
0:37husbands so that even if some do not
0:39obey the word they may be one without a
0:41word by the conduct of their wives when
0:43they see you respectful and pure conduct
0:46do not let your adorning be external the
0:49braiding of hair the putting on of gold
0:52jewelry or the clothing you wear but let
0:55your adorning be the hidden person of
0:57the heart with the imperishable beauty
0:59of a gentle and a quiet Spirit which in
1:02God’s sight is very precious for this is
1:05how the holy women who hoped in God used
1:07to Adorn themselves by submitting to
1:10their own husbands as Sarah obeyed
1:13Abraham calling him Lord and you are her
1:16children if you do likewise and do not
1:19fear anything that is frightening
1:21likewise husbands live with your wives
1:24in an understanding way showing honor to
1:26the woman as the weaker vessel since
1:28they are heirs with you of the grace of
1:30life so that your prayers may not be
1:32hindered
1:33finally all of you have Unity of Mind
1:36sympathy
1:38brotherly love
1:40a tender heart a humble mind
1:43do not repay evil for evil or reviling
1:46for reviling but on the contrary bless
1:49for to this you were called
1:52that you may obtain a blessing for
1:55whoever desires to love life and to see
1:57good days let him keep his tongue from
1:59evil and his lips from speaking deceit
2:01let him turn away from Evil and do good
2:04let him seek peace and pursue it for the
2:06eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
2:08and his ears are open to their prayer
2:10but the face of the Lord is against
2:12those who do evil now who is there to
2:15harm you if you are zealous for what is
2:17good
2:18but even if you should suffer for
2:20righteousness sake you will be blessed
2:22have no fear of them nor be troubled but
2:25in your hearts honor Christ the Lord Is
2:27Holy always being prepared to make a
2:29defense to anyone who asks you for a
2:32reason and for the hope that is in you
2:34yet do it with gentleness and respect
2:37having a good conscience so that when
2:39you are slandered those who revile your
2:41good behavior in Christ may be put to
2:43shame for it is better to suffer for
2:45doing good if that should be God’s will
2:48than for doing evil for Christ also
2:51suffered once for sins the righteous for
2:54the unrighteous that he might bring us
2:56to God being put to death in the flesh
2:58but made alive in the spirit in which he
3:00went and proclaimed to the spirits in
3:02prison because they formally did not
3:04obey when God’s patience waited in the
3:06days of Noah while the ark was being
3:08prepared in which a few that is eight
3:10persons were brought safely through
3:12water baptism which corresponds to this
3:15now saves you not as a removal of dirt
3:17from the body but as an appeal to God
3:19for a good conscience through the
3:21resurrection of Jesus Christ who has
3:24gone into heaven and is at the right
3:25hand of God with angels and authorities
3:28and Powers having been subjected to him
3:32this is the word of the Lord
3:36in the name of Jesus
3:42so we are two the third chapter of First
3:45Peter and I’ve named the sermon series
3:48not first Peter I’ve named it
3:50impractical Christianity because you’ll
3:53note that pretty much everything we’ve
3:55been reading week after week has we’ve
3:57been working our way through first Peter
3:58seems completely
4:01out of whack with our postmodern culture
4:05and I must warn everybody that as we
4:08work through these little vignettes of
4:10thoughts and these are kind of they’re
4:12kind of strung together Loosely that as
4:14we work our way through them there’s
4:16some things here that uh well could get
4:19us in trouble if we were to say these
4:21things in public
4:22well technically we are in public but
4:24and it’s being recorded so I expect
4:26there will be a people with pitchforks
4:28outside my home sometime before the end
4:30of the week but all of that being said
4:33consider what Peter is writing here
4:36consider what the Holy Spirit would have
4:38us look at and consider well the type of
4:43relationship that husbands and wives are
4:46to have here and I think about years ago
4:49there was a fellow who made his wife a
4:53pastor and and so she was preaching one
4:57Sunday and I happened to review a lot of
4:59really bad sermons and she was preaching
5:01one Sunday and she said you know that
5:03Proverbs 31 Woman
5:06and from the pulpit she says I hate her
5:09foreign
5:11just sitting there going there’s so much
5:14wrong here there’s no way to fix this
5:16this is this is just really bad but you
5:20know she went on you know when in her
5:22liberated feminine self you know female
5:24feminist that she is she you know felt
5:28that we could just put all of that aside
5:29yeah this is the 21st century and so but
5:32listen to these words that God the Holy
5:35Spirit has had the Apostle Peter penned
5:37for us wives
5:40be subject to your own husbands don’t
5:42throw stones at me or tomatoes please
5:44that’s what the text says
5:47be subject to your own husbands so that
5:50even if some do not obey the word they
5:52may be one without a word by the conduct
5:54of their wives when they see your
5:56respectful
5:58and pure conduct
6:01what
6:03and you’re going to note here that
6:04Peter’s admonition to Christian women
6:08does not apply
6:11merely to those wives who have husbands
6:14who are believers
6:18the idea here is actually quite simple
6:21the office of husband is established by
6:23Christ
6:25in the office of wife is established by
6:27Christ
6:28and that being the case whomever holds
6:31that office
6:32is to be respected by virtue of that
6:35office
6:37yeah but my husband you don’t understand
6:38he’s completely worthless he he does
6:42things that drive me completely Bonkers
6:44and crazy if you had to live with this
6:46man you wouldn’t want to show him any
6:48respect either
6:50yeah put all that away
6:53you see note it says that they may be
6:55one without a word by the conduct of
6:58their wives when they see a respectful
6:59and pure conduct and do not let your
7:01adorning be external
7:03braiding of your hair the putting on of
7:06gold jewelry or even the clothing that
7:09you wear I cannot even imagine how much
7:12money Peter is saving women to not have
7:15to chase after the latest Vogue fashions
7:17right instead he says let your adorning
7:20be the hidden person of the heart with
7:22the imperishable beauty of a gentle and
7:25a quiet spirit with which which in God’s
7:28sight is very precious
7:31very precious in God’s sight remember
7:34last week we heard about how our
7:36suffering for doing good is very
7:39precious in God’s sight and that this is
7:41something that we are called to as
7:43Christians and so in the same way
7:45something that’s very precious in God’s
7:47sight is that inner beauty that doesn’t
7:50fade away with age in fact this kind of
7:54beauty that’s being described here would
7:56only grow
7:57more beautiful over time
8:01and then consider then as a great
8:03cross-reference here what God the Holy
8:05Spirit had penned in the Book of
8:07Proverbs proverbs 31. an excellent wife
8:11who can find
8:13she is far more precious than jewels
8:16the heart of her husband trusts in her
8:19and he will have no lack of gain
8:22she does him good and not harm all the
8:25days of her life
8:26she seeks wool and flax and works with
8:28willing hands she is like the ships of
8:31the merchant she brings her food from
8:33afar she Rises while it is yet night and
8:37provides food for her household and
8:39portions for her maidens
8:41she considers a field and she buys it
8:43with the fruit of her hands she plants a
8:45Vineyard she dresses herself with
8:48strength makes her arms strong she
8:51perceives that her merchandise is
8:53profitable her lamp does not go out at
8:56night she puts her hands to this staff
8:58and her hands hold the spindle she opens
9:02her hand to the poor reaches out her
9:05hands to the needy She’s Not Afraid of
9:07snow for her household for all of her
9:10household are clothed in Scarlet
9:12she makes bed coverings for herself her
9:14clothing is fine linen and purple her
9:16husband is known in the gates when he
9:18sits among the Elders of the land she
9:20makes linen garments and sells them she
9:22delivers sashes to the merchant strength
9:25and dignity are her clothing and she
9:27laughs at the time to come she opens her
9:30mouth with wisdom and the teaching of
9:32kindness is on her tongue She Looks well
9:34to the ways of her household and does
9:37not eat the bread of idleness her
9:39children rise up and call her blessed
9:41her husband also
9:44and he Praises her
9:47beautiful picture
9:48beautiful picture and it’s a picture of
9:50what you know Christ intends for
9:55our relationship with our wives to be
9:58and over and again we must remember that
10:01God created Eve fashioned her from Adam
10:04and that she is Adam’s helpmate and so
10:07you get a picture of this and I
10:09understand that this is quite the
10:12standard
10:13and that bringing this up well would
10:15cause one to feel like maybe I haven’t
10:17lived up to that
10:18that’s how the law works
10:21consider then as Peter continues
10:26talking still about the adorning of the
10:29Hidden person
10:30this is how the holy women who hoped in
10:32God used to Adorn themselves
10:34by submitting to their own husbands as
10:37Sarah obeyed Abraham by submitting by
10:40calling him Lord
10:42and you are her children if you do
10:44likewise and do not fear anything that
10:46is frightening
10:47the last part is actually quite
10:49fascinating and do not fear anything
10:51that is frightening over and again
10:53you’ll note that many marriages struggle
10:56struggle when a woman is fear is having
11:00fear and anxiety and usually that fear
11:03and anxiety will have something to do
11:04with money
11:05something to do with the family or
11:07whatever and that fear and anxiety
11:09causes them to freak out and take
11:13matters into their own hands and to
11:14seize control oftentimes and that is not
11:18what they are called to do they are to
11:19continue to submit to their own husbands
11:21and do good even in the midst of
11:24frightening situations it doesn’t say
11:26that frightening situations will not
11:28come
11:28it says that do not fear anything even
11:31when it is frightening but likewise
11:33husbands live with your wives in an
11:35understanding way showing honor to the
11:38woman as the weaker vessel and weaker
11:41vessel here I think this oftentimes gets
11:44misunderstood I think a good way to
11:46think of it is is that we men are a
11:48little rough around the edges if we were
11:50we were a vessel we’re kind of big large
11:53ugly clay pots right and if we’re into
11:56sports maybe we’ve got our favorite
11:58sports teams logo on that pot or if
12:00we’re into you know hunting or whatever
12:02you have AR-15s and stuff like that on
12:05the outside of the pot you kind of get
12:06the idea and there’s nothing beautiful
12:07about the pot and there’s nothing
12:10fragile about it but a woman a wife
12:13as the weaker vessel is a fine fine
12:17china vase beautiful and ornate
12:20and needs to be handled with care that’s
12:23the idea here
12:24so we are to treat honor our spouses our
12:27wives as the weaker vessel since they
12:30are heirs with you and you’ll note then
12:32that Peter makes it very clear that
12:34women and men both equally have the same
12:37standing before the Lord and that women
12:39and men both husbands and wives both are
12:42Heirs of the grace of life and then that
12:45then the little bit of a warning here
12:47and the warning is is that treating your
12:49wife harshly may actually cause your
12:52prayers to be hindered
12:54because you are sinning against
12:57the woman whom God has honored the idea
13:01is simple and when you read Ephesians
13:03chapter 5 it makes it very clear that
13:06this relationship between husbands and
13:08wives physically portrays the mystery
13:10between Christ and his bride the church
13:13and so when a husband abdicates his
13:16responsibility to love his wife as
13:19Christ has loved the church to love her
13:21sacrificially
13:22then he is doing violence to her in a
13:25way that is contrary to the very nature
13:27of Christ and that’s why this warning
13:29then that your prayers may be hindered
13:32and now Peter changes the subject
13:35finally all of you
13:37now we’re talking to everybody because
13:38you know that not everybody’s married
13:40right not everybody’s married I I look
13:42at Brenda it’s going to be a while it’s
13:44going to be a while for you right so
13:47yeah so that that part of the sermon you
13:50you go if you checked out it’s it’s okay
13:52kind of but you should make note for the
13:54future but this next part is for all of
13:57us finally all of you
14:00have Unity of mind
14:03sympathy
14:05brotherly love
14:07a tender heart
14:09and a humble mind
14:11do not repay evil for evil or reviling
14:14for reviling but on the contrary bless
14:19and of course I always read passes like
14:20this and then go really serious
14:23so the idea it kind of works like this
14:25you do not repay evil for evil instead
14:28you repay evil with a blessing you do
14:30not repay reviling for reviling but
14:33instead you pay reviling with a blessing
14:36of course you read something like that
14:38and you go who does that
14:41oh I I can name somebody who did that
14:44he hung on a cross
14:46that’s kind of the point right
14:47so bless for to this and here’s that
14:51word again you were called we were
14:53called to this this is our calling so
14:55that you may obtain a blessing for
14:58whoever desires to love life and to see
15:00good days and who doesn’t want that let
15:03him keep his tongue from evil and his
15:05lips from speaking deceit let him turn
15:07away from Evil and do good let him seek
15:10peace and pursue peace for the eyes of
15:13the Lord are on the righteous and his
15:15ears are open to their prayer but the
15:18face of the Lord is against those who do
15:20evil
15:21important to note over and again it
15:23always surprises me but it shouldn’t
15:25that when people hear a passage like
15:28this especially verse 12 that the eyes
15:30of the Lord are on the righteous and he
15:32hears their prayers that oftentimes we
15:35as Christians think of ourselves outside
15:37of that group because we look at our own
15:40sin we look at our own shortcomings and
15:42you go well I’m not exactly a righteous
15:44person I may aspire to that someday but
15:48maybe the Lord doesn’t hear me
15:52um no no no no that’s not how this works
15:55you see we must remember that we poor
15:59sinners in our sin and our tattered Rags
16:03of sin that Christ has taken those
16:05tattered Rags on himself and he’s given
16:07us an exchange his own clothing his own
16:09righteousness and so because we have
16:12been declared righteous by God that’s a
16:14verdict given by the father himself you
16:17have been declared to be righteous the
16:20gavel has fallen it slaps down and y’all
16:23are righteous so therefore know this and
16:26be confident in it that God’s ears are
16:29open to your prayers
16:31because they are
16:33now who is there to harm you if you are
16:35zealous for what is good let that
16:38question kind of hang out there in outer
16:39space for a second who is to harm you if
16:42you are zealous for what is good
16:45of course you sit there and go well the
16:46answer to that question is obvious no
16:48good deed goes unpunished so
16:51of course there’s people who are going
16:53to harm you if we’re zealous for doing
16:54what is good that’s kind of how things
16:56operate and the Christians get in
16:57trouble all the time for doing good
16:59things
17:00and then Peter anticipates the answer he
17:02says yeah but even if you suffer for
17:04righteousness sake you will be blessed
17:08hmm
17:10okay
17:11so he says have no fear of them nor be
17:13troubled but in your hearts honor Christ
17:16the Lord Is Holy
17:18always being prepared to make a defense
17:21to anyone who asks you for a reason for
17:24the hope that is in you and this is the
17:26old apologist’s text right this is the
17:29one that John Wort Montgomery and the
17:30other apologists and you think of the
17:32late Dr Walter Martin he would love to
17:34tell you this taxi because defense
17:36always be ready to make a defense it’s
17:38the Greek word apologia so always be
17:39ready to defend the Christian faith but
17:42I would argue it’s not quite that when
17:45you consider the context because listen
17:47to this always be ready to give
17:52a defense to anyone who asks you for a
17:56reason for the hope that is in you
18:01huh
18:02oh
18:04yeah and what is Our Hope
18:06Our Hope
18:07is a new heavens and a new Earth
18:10our hope is a world recreated by Christ
18:13where there is no sin There Is No Death
18:15there is no pain there is no suffering
18:17our hope is to see God face to face
18:22hmm you see that’s a great hope and so
18:25once anyone says why do you have that
18:26hope well a defense will go along the
18:29lines of wow haven’t you heard that the
18:30tomb is empty things like this you can
18:32talk like that so but when you make your
18:35defense do so with gentleness and
18:37respect having a good conscience so that
18:39when you are slandered notice he doesn’t
18:41say if
18:42so when you are slandered
18:45you Christians pay attention when you
18:47are slandered
18:49then those who revile your good behavior
18:52in Christ that they may be put to shame
18:54it is better to suffer for doing good if
18:57that should be God’s will than for doing
18:59evil
19:01I would prefer a different option is
19:04there any way we can have some
19:06alleviation on the suffering part but
19:08then again this is what we are called to
19:10remember last week it is better to
19:12suffer for doing good and here’s the
19:15reason why and you’ll note so far we’ve
19:17been hearing
19:19a whole lot of law again
19:23and I is as I read through these texts
19:26and preach through them and as you’re
19:28hearing them I can see on your faces
19:30that you sit there and go huh this is
19:33this is
19:34great stuff pastor
19:37if only I measured up me too
19:41but know this then and here’s the gospel
19:43again Christ also suffered
19:46he suffered once for sins the righteous
19:50for the unrighteous so that he might
19:52bring us to God
19:54being put to Death In the Flesh he was
19:56made alive in the spirit
19:58you see because we do not measure up
20:00because over and again even we
20:02Christians who have a sinful nature have
20:06to be admonished have to be told again
20:10and again
20:13to put that old sinful Adam to death
20:15consider him already dead you know to
20:18walk by faith in sanctification means to
20:21believe the truth about what has
20:23happened to your sinful nature and
20:25according to scripture
20:28your Sinful Nature has already been
20:30crucified with Christ you have been
20:33United with Jesus in his death and his
20:35resurrection and your old sinful nature
20:38pulls the old Monty Python stunt and
20:41says I’m not dead yet
20:44you say yes you might think so but Jesus
20:48says likewise so I am going to believe
20:51what Jesus says and I’m going to
20:53consider you dead and crucified I’m
20:55going to stop listening to you and I’m
20:57going to listen to Christ
20:59because he has suffered for me
21:02he is the righteous one and he is bled
21:05and died for the unrighteous which is
21:07you
21:08as we approach Good Friday and it’s just
21:10a few weeks away consider again vividly
21:14the details of what it took to save you
21:18and to save me that Jesus having been
21:22flogged and beaten and having a crown of
21:24thorns pressed into his head
21:27was suspended Between Heaven and Earth
21:29and had to pull himself up by his arms
21:31even to breathe when he was on the cross
21:33and he suffered and he languished and he
21:36bled and died the righteous one for you
21:39and me the unrighteous ones and he did
21:42that because of his great love for us so
21:44that he might bring us to God and being
21:46put to Death In the Flesh he was made
21:48alive in the spirit and then he went and
21:51proclaimed to the spirits in prison and
21:54this is that portion over and again when
21:56you hear in the Creed he descended into
21:58hell and you sit there and scratch your
22:00head and go what’s that all about well
22:02here’s one of the texts that gives us
22:04just a glimpse as to what that meant
22:05that when Jesus went down to sheol after
22:08he died and he said he cried out it is
22:11finished and gave up his spirit because
22:13he was in charge of when he died he went
22:15down to sheol and there in shayol we
22:18remember from that story of the rich man
22:20and Lazarus that in shayol there’s the
22:22two compartments Abraham’s bosom on the
22:25one side were the righteous those who
22:27had faith and then another side that’s
22:29well called Hades it sounds a lot like
22:33the the warm-up act for hell
22:36and between them there’s a great Chasm
22:38and so from this picture then we get
22:41that Christ descending into hell goes to
22:45the side of Abraham’s bosom the cat of
22:48there and shouts out across the chasm to
22:50those who refused to repent
22:53to those who refuse to believe to those
22:56who refused to be forgiven
23:00and repent of their sins even when God’s
23:03patience waited in the days of Noah that
23:06he proclaimed his victory to them
23:09and see
23:12invoking Noah then does something kind
23:14of twofold
23:16Noah we learn here that while the ark
23:18was being prepared only a few that’s
23:21eight persons in all were brought safely
23:22through water and that Noah was a
23:25preacher of righteousness 120 years he
23:28preached
23:30worst results ever for a pastor as far
23:33as preaching is concerned at the end of
23:35the day only eight were saved and they
23:37were all family
23:39and yet God was patient and the end of
23:42the world is likened by Christ to the
23:45days of Noah
23:46Jesus says that just like in the days of
23:49Noah so it will be with the coming of
23:51the son of man
23:52on the day that he appears there will be
23:54people marrying and giving in marriage
23:56and going about their business not even
23:59knowing
24:00that Calamity is soon to strike you know
24:04always think about that what Jesus says
24:06there in Matthew 24 and you feel you got
24:09to feel some sympathy for the the young
24:11gal who planned her wedding for the day
24:13when the flood came
24:15right
24:16[Music]
24:17um
24:18and now a little bit of fun here
24:23Peter reminds us
24:26that Noah being saved through the flood
24:30is a type and Shadow and the thing that
24:33it gives way to the substance is found
24:34then in our baptism verse 21 baptism
24:38which corresponds to the flood or is the
24:40anti-tupas in the Greek the anti-type of
24:43the flood it baptism now saves you
24:49and it does
24:51and it does this he says not as a
24:53removal of dirt from the body but it’s
24:54an appeal to God for a good conscience
24:56and when you put all the passages
24:58together and consider what Paul writes
25:00in Romans 6 that in our baptisms we are
25:03united with Christ and his death and his
25:05resurrection Peter says that our sins
25:07are washed away and that we receive the
25:09holy spirit in another passage Paul
25:12makes it clear that our hearts are
25:13circumcised by Christ and that in our
25:16baptisms our old sinful atoms are
25:18crucified and so how could it not save
25:21it is the means by which or one of the
25:24means by which God regenerates people
25:26that’s exactly what Titus Chapter 3 says
25:28and so then for the Christian we return
25:31in Repentance daily to our baptisms
25:37because it says here of our baptism it
25:39is an appeal to God for a good
25:41conscience
25:43and this is the reason why even though
25:46the devil rage and try to remind you of
25:48all of your past sins and say you are a
25:52worthless lousy horrible half-hearted
25:55Christian to which you say yeah thanks
25:58for the reminder but I’m baptized
26:03and I have a good conscience knowing
26:06that what God has done for me in the
26:07waters of baptism baptism it now saves
26:10you Peter says
26:12as an appeal to God for a good
26:14conscience through the resurrection of
26:16Jesus who has gone into heaven and is at
26:18the right hand of God with angels and
26:21authorities and Powers having been
26:23subjected to him
26:27what a fun text and I like the fact that
26:30both chapters two and three
26:33begin with law
26:34and end with the gospel quite
26:36appropriate especially during Lent as we
26:38always and again remember that
26:40repentance comprises sorrow for sin
26:44lament even for it and yet at the same
26:48time a confident belief in trust in
26:50Christ that we are saved and forgiven
26:54for his sake by his merits not our own
26:58so let us again embrace our repentance
27:01here let us again see the ways in which
27:04we do not measure up the ways in which
27:06we have fallen short and let us also
27:09confidently believe in the one who has
27:10suffered once for sins the righteous for
27:13the unrighteous because we through him
27:16have now been brought to God
27:18in the name of Jesus
