| 0:27 | A reading from |
| 0:30 | First Peter chapter 3. |
| 0:33 | likewise wives be subject to your own |
| 0:37 | husbands so that even if some do not |
| 0:39 | obey the word they may be one without a |
| 0:41 | word by the conduct of their wives when |
| 0:43 | they see you respectful and pure conduct |
| 0:46 | do not let your adorning be external the |
| 0:49 | braiding of hair the putting on of gold |
| 0:52 | jewelry or the clothing you wear but let |
| 0:55 | your adorning be the hidden person of |
| 0:57 | the heart with the imperishable beauty |
| 0:59 | of a gentle and a quiet Spirit which in |
| 1:02 | God’s sight is very precious for this is |
| 1:05 | how the holy women who hoped in God used |
| 1:07 | to Adorn themselves by submitting to |
| 1:10 | their own husbands as Sarah obeyed |
| 1:13 | Abraham calling him Lord and you are her |
| 1:16 | children if you do likewise and do not |
| 1:19 | fear anything that is frightening |
| 1:21 | likewise husbands live with your wives |
| 1:24 | in an understanding way showing honor to |
| 1:26 | the woman as the weaker vessel since |
| 1:28 | they are heirs with you of the grace of |
| 1:30 | life so that your prayers may not be |
| 1:32 | hindered |
| 1:33 | finally all of you have Unity of Mind |
| 1:36 | sympathy |
| 1:38 | brotherly love |
| 1:40 | a tender heart a humble mind |
| 1:43 | do not repay evil for evil or reviling |
| 1:46 | for reviling but on the contrary bless |
| 1:49 | for to this you were called |
| 1:52 | that you may obtain a blessing for |
| 1:55 | whoever desires to love life and to see |
| 1:57 | good days let him keep his tongue from |
| 1:59 | evil and his lips from speaking deceit |
| 2:01 | let him turn away from Evil and do good |
| 2:04 | let him seek peace and pursue it for the |
| 2:06 | eyes of the Lord are on the righteous |
| 2:08 | and his ears are open to their prayer |
| 2:10 | but the face of the Lord is against |
| 2:12 | those who do evil now who is there to |
| 2:15 | harm you if you are zealous for what is |
| 2:17 | good |
| 2:18 | but even if you should suffer for |
| 2:20 | righteousness sake you will be blessed |
| 2:22 | have no fear of them nor be troubled but |
| 2:25 | in your hearts honor Christ the Lord Is |
| 2:27 | Holy always being prepared to make a |
| 2:29 | defense to anyone who asks you for a |
| 2:32 | reason and for the hope that is in you |
| 2:34 | yet do it with gentleness and respect |
| 2:37 | having a good conscience so that when |
| 2:39 | you are slandered those who revile your |
| 2:41 | good behavior in Christ may be put to |
| 2:43 | shame for it is better to suffer for |
| 2:45 | doing good if that should be God’s will |
| 2:48 | than for doing evil for Christ also |
| 2:51 | suffered once for sins the righteous for |
| 2:54 | the unrighteous that he might bring us |
| 2:56 | to God being put to death in the flesh |
| 2:58 | but made alive in the spirit in which he |
| 3:00 | went and proclaimed to the spirits in |
| 3:02 | prison because they formally did not |
| 3:04 | obey when God’s patience waited in the |
| 3:06 | days of Noah while the ark was being |
| 3:08 | prepared in which a few that is eight |
| 3:10 | persons were brought safely through |
| 3:12 | water baptism which corresponds to this |
| 3:15 | now saves you not as a removal of dirt |
| 3:17 | from the body but as an appeal to God |
| 3:19 | for a good conscience through the |
| 3:21 | resurrection of Jesus Christ who has |
| 3:24 | gone into heaven and is at the right |
| 3:25 | hand of God with angels and authorities |
| 3:28 | and Powers having been subjected to him |
| 3:32 | this is the word of the Lord |
| 3:36 | in the name of Jesus |
| 3:42 | so we are two the third chapter of First |
| 3:45 | Peter and I’ve named the sermon series |
| 3:48 | not first Peter I’ve named it |
| 3:50 | impractical Christianity because you’ll |
| 3:53 | note that pretty much everything we’ve |
| 3:55 | been reading week after week has we’ve |
| 3:57 | been working our way through first Peter |
| 3:58 | seems completely |
| 4:01 | out of whack with our postmodern culture |
| 4:05 | and I must warn everybody that as we |
| 4:08 | work through these little vignettes of |
| 4:10 | thoughts and these are kind of they’re |
| 4:12 | kind of strung together Loosely that as |
| 4:14 | we work our way through them there’s |
| 4:16 | some things here that uh well could get |
| 4:19 | us in trouble if we were to say these |
| 4:21 | things in public |
| 4:22 | well technically we are in public but |
| 4:24 | and it’s being recorded so I expect |
| 4:26 | there will be a people with pitchforks |
| 4:28 | outside my home sometime before the end |
| 4:30 | of the week but all of that being said |
| 4:33 | consider what Peter is writing here |
| 4:36 | consider what the Holy Spirit would have |
| 4:38 | us look at and consider well the type of |
| 4:43 | relationship that husbands and wives are |
| 4:46 | to have here and I think about years ago |
| 4:49 | there was a fellow who made his wife a |
| 4:53 | pastor and and so she was preaching one |
| 4:57 | Sunday and I happened to review a lot of |
| 4:59 | really bad sermons and she was preaching |
| 5:01 | one Sunday and she said you know that |
| 5:03 | Proverbs 31 Woman |
| 5:06 | and from the pulpit she says I hate her |
| 5:09 | foreign |
| 5:11 | just sitting there going there’s so much |
| 5:14 | wrong here there’s no way to fix this |
| 5:16 | this is this is just really bad but you |
| 5:20 | know she went on you know when in her |
| 5:22 | liberated feminine self you know female |
| 5:24 | feminist that she is she you know felt |
| 5:28 | that we could just put all of that aside |
| 5:29 | yeah this is the 21st century and so but |
| 5:32 | listen to these words that God the Holy |
| 5:35 | Spirit has had the Apostle Peter penned |
| 5:37 | for us wives |
| 5:40 | be subject to your own husbands don’t |
| 5:42 | throw stones at me or tomatoes please |
| 5:44 | that’s what the text says |
| 5:47 | be subject to your own husbands so that |
| 5:50 | even if some do not obey the word they |
| 5:52 | may be one without a word by the conduct |
| 5:54 | of their wives when they see your |
| 5:56 | respectful |
| 5:58 | and pure conduct |
| 6:01 | what |
| 6:03 | and you’re going to note here that |
| 6:04 | Peter’s admonition to Christian women |
| 6:08 | does not apply |
| 6:11 | merely to those wives who have husbands |
| 6:14 | who are believers |
| 6:18 | the idea here is actually quite simple |
| 6:21 | the office of husband is established by |
| 6:23 | Christ |
| 6:25 | in the office of wife is established by |
| 6:27 | Christ |
| 6:28 | and that being the case whomever holds |
| 6:31 | that office |
| 6:32 | is to be respected by virtue of that |
| 6:35 | office |
| 6:37 | yeah but my husband you don’t understand |
| 6:38 | he’s completely worthless he he does |
| 6:42 | things that drive me completely Bonkers |
| 6:44 | and crazy if you had to live with this |
| 6:46 | man you wouldn’t want to show him any |
| 6:48 | respect either |
| 6:50 | yeah put all that away |
| 6:53 | you see note it says that they may be |
| 6:55 | one without a word by the conduct of |
| 6:58 | their wives when they see a respectful |
| 6:59 | and pure conduct and do not let your |
| 7:01 | adorning be external |
| 7:03 | braiding of your hair the putting on of |
| 7:06 | gold jewelry or even the clothing that |
| 7:09 | you wear I cannot even imagine how much |
| 7:12 | money Peter is saving women to not have |
| 7:15 | to chase after the latest Vogue fashions |
| 7:17 | right instead he says let your adorning |
| 7:20 | be the hidden person of the heart with |
| 7:22 | the imperishable beauty of a gentle and |
| 7:25 | a quiet spirit with which which in God’s |
| 7:28 | sight is very precious |
| 7:31 | very precious in God’s sight remember |
| 7:34 | last week we heard about how our |
| 7:36 | suffering for doing good is very |
| 7:39 | precious in God’s sight and that this is |
| 7:41 | something that we are called to as |
| 7:43 | Christians and so in the same way |
| 7:45 | something that’s very precious in God’s |
| 7:47 | sight is that inner beauty that doesn’t |
| 7:50 | fade away with age in fact this kind of |
| 7:54 | beauty that’s being described here would |
| 7:56 | only grow |
| 7:57 | more beautiful over time |
| 8:01 | and then consider then as a great |
| 8:03 | cross-reference here what God the Holy |
| 8:05 | Spirit had penned in the Book of |
| 8:07 | Proverbs proverbs 31. an excellent wife |
| 8:11 | who can find |
| 8:13 | she is far more precious than jewels |
| 8:16 | the heart of her husband trusts in her |
| 8:19 | and he will have no lack of gain |
| 8:22 | she does him good and not harm all the |
| 8:25 | days of her life |
| 8:26 | she seeks wool and flax and works with |
| 8:28 | willing hands she is like the ships of |
| 8:31 | the merchant she brings her food from |
| 8:33 | afar she Rises while it is yet night and |
| 8:37 | provides food for her household and |
| 8:39 | portions for her maidens |
| 8:41 | she considers a field and she buys it |
| 8:43 | with the fruit of her hands she plants a |
| 8:45 | Vineyard she dresses herself with |
| 8:48 | strength makes her arms strong she |
| 8:51 | perceives that her merchandise is |
| 8:53 | profitable her lamp does not go out at |
| 8:56 | night she puts her hands to this staff |
| 8:58 | and her hands hold the spindle she opens |
| 9:02 | her hand to the poor reaches out her |
| 9:05 | hands to the needy She’s Not Afraid of |
| 9:07 | snow for her household for all of her |
| 9:10 | household are clothed in Scarlet |
| 9:12 | she makes bed coverings for herself her |
| 9:14 | clothing is fine linen and purple her |
| 9:16 | husband is known in the gates when he |
| 9:18 | sits among the Elders of the land she |
| 9:20 | makes linen garments and sells them she |
| 9:22 | delivers sashes to the merchant strength |
| 9:25 | and dignity are her clothing and she |
| 9:27 | laughs at the time to come she opens her |
| 9:30 | mouth with wisdom and the teaching of |
| 9:32 | kindness is on her tongue She Looks well |
| 9:34 | to the ways of her household and does |
| 9:37 | not eat the bread of idleness her |
| 9:39 | children rise up and call her blessed |
| 9:41 | her husband also |
| 9:44 | and he Praises her |
| 9:47 | beautiful picture |
| 9:48 | beautiful picture and it’s a picture of |
| 9:50 | what you know Christ intends for |
| 9:55 | our relationship with our wives to be |
| 9:58 | and over and again we must remember that |
| 10:01 | God created Eve fashioned her from Adam |
| 10:04 | and that she is Adam’s helpmate and so |
| 10:07 | you get a picture of this and I |
| 10:09 | understand that this is quite the |
| 10:12 | standard |
| 10:13 | and that bringing this up well would |
| 10:15 | cause one to feel like maybe I haven’t |
| 10:17 | lived up to that |
| 10:18 | that’s how the law works |
| 10:21 | consider then as Peter continues |
| 10:26 | talking still about the adorning of the |
| 10:29 | Hidden person |
| 10:30 | this is how the holy women who hoped in |
| 10:32 | God used to Adorn themselves |
| 10:34 | by submitting to their own husbands as |
| 10:37 | Sarah obeyed Abraham by submitting by |
| 10:40 | calling him Lord |
| 10:42 | and you are her children if you do |
| 10:44 | likewise and do not fear anything that |
| 10:46 | is frightening |
| 10:47 | the last part is actually quite |
| 10:49 | fascinating and do not fear anything |
| 10:51 | that is frightening over and again |
| 10:53 | you’ll note that many marriages struggle |
| 10:56 | struggle when a woman is fear is having |
| 11:00 | fear and anxiety and usually that fear |
| 11:03 | and anxiety will have something to do |
| 11:04 | with money |
| 11:05 | something to do with the family or |
| 11:07 | whatever and that fear and anxiety |
| 11:09 | causes them to freak out and take |
| 11:13 | matters into their own hands and to |
| 11:14 | seize control oftentimes and that is not |
| 11:18 | what they are called to do they are to |
| 11:19 | continue to submit to their own husbands |
| 11:21 | and do good even in the midst of |
| 11:24 | frightening situations it doesn’t say |
| 11:26 | that frightening situations will not |
| 11:28 | come |
| 11:28 | it says that do not fear anything even |
| 11:31 | when it is frightening but likewise |
| 11:33 | husbands live with your wives in an |
| 11:35 | understanding way showing honor to the |
| 11:38 | woman as the weaker vessel and weaker |
| 11:41 | vessel here I think this oftentimes gets |
| 11:44 | misunderstood I think a good way to |
| 11:46 | think of it is is that we men are a |
| 11:48 | little rough around the edges if we were |
| 11:50 | we were a vessel we’re kind of big large |
| 11:53 | ugly clay pots right and if we’re into |
| 11:56 | sports maybe we’ve got our favorite |
| 11:58 | sports teams logo on that pot or if |
| 12:00 | we’re into you know hunting or whatever |
| 12:02 | you have AR-15s and stuff like that on |
| 12:05 | the outside of the pot you kind of get |
| 12:06 | the idea and there’s nothing beautiful |
| 12:07 | about the pot and there’s nothing |
| 12:10 | fragile about it but a woman a wife |
| 12:13 | as the weaker vessel is a fine fine |
| 12:17 | china vase beautiful and ornate |
| 12:20 | and needs to be handled with care that’s |
| 12:23 | the idea here |
| 12:24 | so we are to treat honor our spouses our |
| 12:27 | wives as the weaker vessel since they |
| 12:30 | are heirs with you and you’ll note then |
| 12:32 | that Peter makes it very clear that |
| 12:34 | women and men both equally have the same |
| 12:37 | standing before the Lord and that women |
| 12:39 | and men both husbands and wives both are |
| 12:42 | Heirs of the grace of life and then that |
| 12:45 | then the little bit of a warning here |
| 12:47 | and the warning is is that treating your |
| 12:49 | wife harshly may actually cause your |
| 12:52 | prayers to be hindered |
| 12:54 | because you are sinning against |
| 12:57 | the woman whom God has honored the idea |
| 13:01 | is simple and when you read Ephesians |
| 13:03 | chapter 5 it makes it very clear that |
| 13:06 | this relationship between husbands and |
| 13:08 | wives physically portrays the mystery |
| 13:10 | between Christ and his bride the church |
| 13:13 | and so when a husband abdicates his |
| 13:16 | responsibility to love his wife as |
| 13:19 | Christ has loved the church to love her |
| 13:21 | sacrificially |
| 13:22 | then he is doing violence to her in a |
| 13:25 | way that is contrary to the very nature |
| 13:27 | of Christ and that’s why this warning |
| 13:29 | then that your prayers may be hindered |
| 13:32 | and now Peter changes the subject |
| 13:35 | finally all of you |
| 13:37 | now we’re talking to everybody because |
| 13:38 | you know that not everybody’s married |
| 13:40 | right not everybody’s married I I look |
| 13:42 | at Brenda it’s going to be a while it’s |
| 13:44 | going to be a while for you right so |
| 13:47 | yeah so that that part of the sermon you |
| 13:50 | you go if you checked out it’s it’s okay |
| 13:52 | kind of but you should make note for the |
| 13:54 | future but this next part is for all of |
| 13:57 | us finally all of you |
| 14:00 | have Unity of mind |
| 14:03 | sympathy |
| 14:05 | brotherly love |
| 14:07 | a tender heart |
| 14:09 | and a humble mind |
| 14:11 | do not repay evil for evil or reviling |
| 14:14 | for reviling but on the contrary bless |
| 14:19 | and of course I always read passes like |
| 14:20 | this and then go really serious |
| 14:23 | so the idea it kind of works like this |
| 14:25 | you do not repay evil for evil instead |
| 14:28 | you repay evil with a blessing you do |
| 14:30 | not repay reviling for reviling but |
| 14:33 | instead you pay reviling with a blessing |
| 14:36 | of course you read something like that |
| 14:38 | and you go who does that |
| 14:41 | oh I I can name somebody who did that |
| 14:44 | he hung on a cross |
| 14:46 | that’s kind of the point right |
| 14:47 | so bless for to this and here’s that |
| 14:51 | word again you were called we were |
| 14:53 | called to this this is our calling so |
| 14:55 | that you may obtain a blessing for |
| 14:58 | whoever desires to love life and to see |
| 15:00 | good days and who doesn’t want that let |
| 15:03 | him keep his tongue from evil and his |
| 15:05 | lips from speaking deceit let him turn |
| 15:07 | away from Evil and do good let him seek |
| 15:10 | peace and pursue peace for the eyes of |
| 15:13 | the Lord are on the righteous and his |
| 15:15 | ears are open to their prayer but the |
| 15:18 | face of the Lord is against those who do |
| 15:20 | evil |
| 15:21 | important to note over and again it |
| 15:23 | always surprises me but it shouldn’t |
| 15:25 | that when people hear a passage like |
| 15:28 | this especially verse 12 that the eyes |
| 15:30 | of the Lord are on the righteous and he |
| 15:32 | hears their prayers that oftentimes we |
| 15:35 | as Christians think of ourselves outside |
| 15:37 | of that group because we look at our own |
| 15:40 | sin we look at our own shortcomings and |
| 15:42 | you go well I’m not exactly a righteous |
| 15:44 | person I may aspire to that someday but |
| 15:48 | maybe the Lord doesn’t hear me |
| 15:52 | um no no no no that’s not how this works |
| 15:55 | you see we must remember that we poor |
| 15:59 | sinners in our sin and our tattered Rags |
| 16:03 | of sin that Christ has taken those |
| 16:05 | tattered Rags on himself and he’s given |
| 16:07 | us an exchange his own clothing his own |
| 16:09 | righteousness and so because we have |
| 16:12 | been declared righteous by God that’s a |
| 16:14 | verdict given by the father himself you |
| 16:17 | have been declared to be righteous the |
| 16:20 | gavel has fallen it slaps down and y’all |
| 16:23 | are righteous so therefore know this and |
| 16:26 | be confident in it that God’s ears are |
| 16:29 | open to your prayers |
| 16:31 | because they are |
| 16:33 | now who is there to harm you if you are |
| 16:35 | zealous for what is good let that |
| 16:38 | question kind of hang out there in outer |
| 16:39 | space for a second who is to harm you if |
| 16:42 | you are zealous for what is good |
| 16:45 | of course you sit there and go well the |
| 16:46 | answer to that question is obvious no |
| 16:48 | good deed goes unpunished so |
| 16:51 | of course there’s people who are going |
| 16:53 | to harm you if we’re zealous for doing |
| 16:54 | what is good that’s kind of how things |
| 16:56 | operate and the Christians get in |
| 16:57 | trouble all the time for doing good |
| 16:59 | things |
| 17:00 | and then Peter anticipates the answer he |
| 17:02 | says yeah but even if you suffer for |
| 17:04 | righteousness sake you will be blessed |
| 17:08 | hmm |
| 17:10 | okay |
| 17:11 | so he says have no fear of them nor be |
| 17:13 | troubled but in your hearts honor Christ |
| 17:16 | the Lord Is Holy |
| 17:18 | always being prepared to make a defense |
| 17:21 | to anyone who asks you for a reason for |
| 17:24 | the hope that is in you and this is the |
| 17:26 | old apologist’s text right this is the |
| 17:29 | one that John Wort Montgomery and the |
| 17:30 | other apologists and you think of the |
| 17:32 | late Dr Walter Martin he would love to |
| 17:34 | tell you this taxi because defense |
| 17:36 | always be ready to make a defense it’s |
| 17:38 | the Greek word apologia so always be |
| 17:39 | ready to defend the Christian faith but |
| 17:42 | I would argue it’s not quite that when |
| 17:45 | you consider the context because listen |
| 17:47 | to this always be ready to give |
| 17:52 | a defense to anyone who asks you for a |
| 17:56 | reason for the hope that is in you |
| 18:01 | huh |
| 18:02 | oh |
| 18:04 | yeah and what is Our Hope |
| 18:06 | Our Hope |
| 18:07 | is a new heavens and a new Earth |
| 18:10 | our hope is a world recreated by Christ |
| 18:13 | where there is no sin There Is No Death |
| 18:15 | there is no pain there is no suffering |
| 18:17 | our hope is to see God face to face |
| 18:22 | hmm you see that’s a great hope and so |
| 18:25 | once anyone says why do you have that |
| 18:26 | hope well a defense will go along the |
| 18:29 | lines of wow haven’t you heard that the |
| 18:30 | tomb is empty things like this you can |
| 18:32 | talk like that so but when you make your |
| 18:35 | defense do so with gentleness and |
| 18:37 | respect having a good conscience so that |
| 18:39 | when you are slandered notice he doesn’t |
| 18:41 | say if |
| 18:42 | so when you are slandered |
| 18:45 | you Christians pay attention when you |
| 18:47 | are slandered |
| 18:49 | then those who revile your good behavior |
| 18:52 | in Christ that they may be put to shame |
| 18:54 | it is better to suffer for doing good if |
| 18:57 | that should be God’s will than for doing |
| 18:59 | evil |
| 19:01 | I would prefer a different option is |
| 19:04 | there any way we can have some |
| 19:06 | alleviation on the suffering part but |
| 19:08 | then again this is what we are called to |
| 19:10 | remember last week it is better to |
| 19:12 | suffer for doing good and here’s the |
| 19:15 | reason why and you’ll note so far we’ve |
| 19:17 | been hearing |
| 19:19 | a whole lot of law again |
| 19:23 | and I is as I read through these texts |
| 19:26 | and preach through them and as you’re |
| 19:28 | hearing them I can see on your faces |
| 19:30 | that you sit there and go huh this is |
| 19:33 | this is |
| 19:34 | great stuff pastor |
| 19:37 | if only I measured up me too |
| 19:41 | but know this then and here’s the gospel |
| 19:43 | again Christ also suffered |
| 19:46 | he suffered once for sins the righteous |
| 19:50 | for the unrighteous so that he might |
| 19:52 | bring us to God |
| 19:54 | being put to Death In the Flesh he was |
| 19:56 | made alive in the spirit |
| 19:58 | you see because we do not measure up |
| 20:00 | because over and again even we |
| 20:02 | Christians who have a sinful nature have |
| 20:06 | to be admonished have to be told again |
| 20:10 | and again |
| 20:13 | to put that old sinful Adam to death |
| 20:15 | consider him already dead you know to |
| 20:18 | walk by faith in sanctification means to |
| 20:21 | believe the truth about what has |
| 20:23 | happened to your sinful nature and |
| 20:25 | according to scripture |
| 20:28 | your Sinful Nature has already been |
| 20:30 | crucified with Christ you have been |
| 20:33 | United with Jesus in his death and his |
| 20:35 | resurrection and your old sinful nature |
| 20:38 | pulls the old Monty Python stunt and |
| 20:41 | says I’m not dead yet |
| 20:44 | you say yes you might think so but Jesus |
| 20:48 | says likewise so I am going to believe |
| 20:51 | what Jesus says and I’m going to |
| 20:53 | consider you dead and crucified I’m |
| 20:55 | going to stop listening to you and I’m |
| 20:57 | going to listen to Christ |
| 20:59 | because he has suffered for me |
| 21:02 | he is the righteous one and he is bled |
| 21:05 | and died for the unrighteous which is |
| 21:07 | you |
| 21:08 | as we approach Good Friday and it’s just |
| 21:10 | a few weeks away consider again vividly |
| 21:14 | the details of what it took to save you |
| 21:18 | and to save me that Jesus having been |
| 21:22 | flogged and beaten and having a crown of |
| 21:24 | thorns pressed into his head |
| 21:27 | was suspended Between Heaven and Earth |
| 21:29 | and had to pull himself up by his arms |
| 21:31 | even to breathe when he was on the cross |
| 21:33 | and he suffered and he languished and he |
| 21:36 | bled and died the righteous one for you |
| 21:39 | and me the unrighteous ones and he did |
| 21:42 | that because of his great love for us so |
| 21:44 | that he might bring us to God and being |
| 21:46 | put to Death In the Flesh he was made |
| 21:48 | alive in the spirit and then he went and |
| 21:51 | proclaimed to the spirits in prison and |
| 21:54 | this is that portion over and again when |
| 21:56 | you hear in the Creed he descended into |
| 21:58 | hell and you sit there and scratch your |
| 22:00 | head and go what’s that all about well |
| 22:02 | here’s one of the texts that gives us |
| 22:04 | just a glimpse as to what that meant |
| 22:05 | that when Jesus went down to sheol after |
| 22:08 | he died and he said he cried out it is |
| 22:11 | finished and gave up his spirit because |
| 22:13 | he was in charge of when he died he went |
| 22:15 | down to sheol and there in shayol we |
| 22:18 | remember from that story of the rich man |
| 22:20 | and Lazarus that in shayol there’s the |
| 22:22 | two compartments Abraham’s bosom on the |
| 22:25 | one side were the righteous those who |
| 22:27 | had faith and then another side that’s |
| 22:29 | well called Hades it sounds a lot like |
| 22:33 | the the warm-up act for hell |
| 22:36 | and between them there’s a great Chasm |
| 22:38 | and so from this picture then we get |
| 22:41 | that Christ descending into hell goes to |
| 22:45 | the side of Abraham’s bosom the cat of |
| 22:48 | there and shouts out across the chasm to |
| 22:50 | those who refused to repent |
| 22:53 | to those who refuse to believe to those |
| 22:56 | who refused to be forgiven |
| 23:00 | and repent of their sins even when God’s |
| 23:03 | patience waited in the days of Noah that |
| 23:06 | he proclaimed his victory to them |
| 23:09 | and see |
| 23:12 | invoking Noah then does something kind |
| 23:14 | of twofold |
| 23:16 | Noah we learn here that while the ark |
| 23:18 | was being prepared only a few that’s |
| 23:21 | eight persons in all were brought safely |
| 23:22 | through water and that Noah was a |
| 23:25 | preacher of righteousness 120 years he |
| 23:28 | preached |
| 23:30 | worst results ever for a pastor as far |
| 23:33 | as preaching is concerned at the end of |
| 23:35 | the day only eight were saved and they |
| 23:37 | were all family |
| 23:39 | and yet God was patient and the end of |
| 23:42 | the world is likened by Christ to the |
| 23:45 | days of Noah |
| 23:46 | Jesus says that just like in the days of |
| 23:49 | Noah so it will be with the coming of |
| 23:51 | the son of man |
| 23:52 | on the day that he appears there will be |
| 23:54 | people marrying and giving in marriage |
| 23:56 | and going about their business not even |
| 23:59 | knowing |
| 24:00 | that Calamity is soon to strike you know |
| 24:04 | always think about that what Jesus says |
| 24:06 | there in Matthew 24 and you feel you got |
| 24:09 | to feel some sympathy for the the young |
| 24:11 | gal who planned her wedding for the day |
| 24:13 | when the flood came |
| 24:15 | right |
| 24:16 | [Music] |
| 24:17 | um |
| 24:18 | and now a little bit of fun here |
| 24:23 | Peter reminds us |
| 24:26 | that Noah being saved through the flood |
| 24:30 | is a type and Shadow and the thing that |
| 24:33 | it gives way to the substance is found |
| 24:34 | then in our baptism verse 21 baptism |
| 24:38 | which corresponds to the flood or is the |
| 24:40 | anti-tupas in the Greek the anti-type of |
| 24:43 | the flood it baptism now saves you |
| 24:49 | and it does |
| 24:51 | and it does this he says not as a |
| 24:53 | removal of dirt from the body but it’s |
| 24:54 | an appeal to God for a good conscience |
| 24:56 | and when you put all the passages |
| 24:58 | together and consider what Paul writes |
| 25:00 | in Romans 6 that in our baptisms we are |
| 25:03 | united with Christ and his death and his |
| 25:05 | resurrection Peter says that our sins |
| 25:07 | are washed away and that we receive the |
| 25:09 | holy spirit in another passage Paul |
| 25:12 | makes it clear that our hearts are |
| 25:13 | circumcised by Christ and that in our |
| 25:16 | baptisms our old sinful atoms are |
| 25:18 | crucified and so how could it not save |
| 25:21 | it is the means by which or one of the |
| 25:24 | means by which God regenerates people |
| 25:26 | that’s exactly what Titus Chapter 3 says |
| 25:28 | and so then for the Christian we return |
| 25:31 | in Repentance daily to our baptisms |
| 25:37 | because it says here of our baptism it |
| 25:39 | is an appeal to God for a good |
| 25:41 | conscience |
| 25:43 | and this is the reason why even though |
| 25:46 | the devil rage and try to remind you of |
| 25:48 | all of your past sins and say you are a |
| 25:52 | worthless lousy horrible half-hearted |
| 25:55 | Christian to which you say yeah thanks |
| 25:58 | for the reminder but I’m baptized |
| 26:03 | and I have a good conscience knowing |
| 26:06 | that what God has done for me in the |
| 26:07 | waters of baptism baptism it now saves |
| 26:10 | you Peter says |
| 26:12 | as an appeal to God for a good |
| 26:14 | conscience through the resurrection of |
| 26:16 | Jesus who has gone into heaven and is at |
| 26:18 | the right hand of God with angels and |
| 26:21 | authorities and Powers having been |
| 26:23 | subjected to him |
| 26:27 | what a fun text and I like the fact that |
| 26:30 | both chapters two and three |
| 26:33 | begin with law |
| 26:34 | and end with the gospel quite |
| 26:36 | appropriate especially during Lent as we |
| 26:38 | always and again remember that |
| 26:40 | repentance comprises sorrow for sin |
| 26:44 | lament even for it and yet at the same |
| 26:48 | time a confident belief in trust in |
| 26:50 | Christ that we are saved and forgiven |
| 26:54 | for his sake by his merits not our own |
| 26:58 | so let us again embrace our repentance |
| 27:01 | here let us again see the ways in which |
| 27:04 | we do not measure up the ways in which |
| 27:06 | we have fallen short and let us also |
| 27:09 | confidently believe in the one who has |
| 27:10 | suffered once for sins the righteous for |
| 27:13 | the unrighteous because we through him |
| 27:16 | have now been brought to God |
| 27:18 | in the name of Jesus |
| 27:20 | amen |
| 27:21 | [Music] |
