| 0:09 | hello |
| 0:11 | today let’s talk about becoming |
| 0:13 | Witnesses for Jesus |
| 0:16 | in the gospel text from Luke chapter 24 |
| 0:19 | we meet two disciples on the road to |
| 0:21 | Emmaus |
| 0:23 | they have all the right information |
| 0:25 | but none of the necessary understanding |
| 0:29 | they know that Jesus was a prophet |
| 0:31 | Mighty indeed and word |
| 0:33 | they know that their Chief priests and |
| 0:35 | rulers delivered him up to the sentence |
| 0:37 | of death |
| 0:38 | and that he was crucified |
| 0:40 | they know that he died on the cross on |
| 0:43 | Friday before the Sabbath |
| 0:46 | they had been hoping that it was he who |
| 0:48 | was going to redeem Israel |
| 0:51 | all of the facts are correct |
| 0:53 | but they’re missing some crucial |
| 0:54 | insights from Holy Scripture and from |
| 0:57 | the Holy Spirit |
| 0:59 | as they are walking they are approached |
| 1:02 | and then joined by Jesus himself |
| 1:06 | but their eyes are prevented from |
| 1:08 | recognizing him |
| 1:10 | these are some of the Master’s own |
| 1:12 | disciples why can they not recognize him |
| 1:15 | and why did Jesus not introduce himself |
| 1:17 | to them |
| 1:19 | this is all part of God’s design |
| 1:21 | and it is instructive for the church and |
| 1:24 | for us today |
| 1:25 | so let’s watch and see what happens next |
| 1:30 | Jesus said to them |
| 1:33 | what are these words that you are |
| 1:34 | exchanging with one another as you are |
| 1:37 | walking |
| 1:38 | and they stood still looking sad |
| 1:42 | Jesus asks a question and it almost |
| 1:45 | appears as though he is a student asking |
| 1:47 | them for answers |
| 1:50 | they explain |
| 1:51 | that there was a man named Jesus he was |
| 1:55 | mighty in word indeed |
| 1:57 | he was crucified some three days ago |
| 2:01 | some women whom they know even claimed |
| 2:04 | that he was risen from the tomb |
| 2:09 | it is not long before we see that Jesus |
| 2:11 | is the real teacher here and they’re the |
| 2:13 | students |
| 2:14 | Luke 24 beginning with the 26th verse |
| 2:18 | Jesus says oh the 25th verse Jesus says |
| 2:24 | o foolish men and slow of heart to |
| 2:26 | believe in all that the prophets have |
| 2:28 | spoken was it not necessary for the |
| 2:31 | Christ to suffer these things and to |
| 2:33 | enter into his glory |
| 2:36 | at this point Jesus begins teaching them |
| 2:39 | from the Old Testament |
| 2:41 | from the Books of Moses like genesis |
| 2:44 | chapter 3 from the prophets like the |
| 2:46 | prophet Isaiah chapter 53 and from the |
| 2:50 | Psalms like Psalm 22 |
| 2:54 | Jesus explains that the word of God has |
| 2:57 | always foretold that Messiah was coming |
| 3:00 | and that he would accomplish his purpose |
| 3:02 | of redeeming and saving by means of his |
| 3:05 | own sacrifice his suffering death and |
| 3:09 | Resurrection |
| 3:11 | the walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus was |
| 3:14 | about seven miles or almost two hours |
| 3:18 | Jesus was able to provide a good deal of |
| 3:21 | instruction to his students |
| 3:23 | perhaps we would even call them |
| 3:25 | catechism students |
| 3:27 | as they approached Emmaus they invited |
| 3:29 | Jesus to stay with them and get |
| 3:31 | something to eat |
| 3:33 | once again it looks as though they’re |
| 3:35 | the leaders they’re they’re taking the |
| 3:37 | place of the host |
| 3:39 | but when they recline at the table |
| 3:41 | it was Jesus who was the real host |
| 3:45 | he took the bread blessed it broke it |
| 3:48 | and gave it to them |
| 3:50 | suddenly |
| 3:52 | everything was clear |
| 3:54 | their eyes were opened suddenly they |
| 3:57 | realized that this was their crucified |
| 4:00 | now Risen Lord |
| 4:02 | of course there had to be suffering a |
| 4:05 | suffering Messiah there had to be a |
| 4:08 | crucifixion and a Risen Lord |
| 4:11 | God had declared it for hundreds of |
| 4:13 | years in his scripture now they |
| 4:15 | understood |
| 4:16 | this is the Messiah the Savior this is |
| 4:20 | our Jesus who has come to redeem Israel |
| 4:23 | but not at all in the way that we had |
| 4:25 | thought |
| 4:27 | he has taken the sin of the world |
| 4:29 | he has conquered death and the devil |
| 4:32 | the Lord Jesus who had been crucified is |
| 4:35 | now the very one who is walking with |
| 4:38 | them |
| 4:39 | who is instructing them and who is now |
| 4:42 | providing them with the sacred meal yes |
| 4:45 | Jesus is savior but yes Jesus is their |
| 4:49 | savior |
| 4:51 | with that |
| 4:53 | Jesus vanished |
| 4:54 | and with that |
| 4:56 | they Rose immediately from the table |
| 4:59 | and returned seven miles back to |
| 5:01 | Jerusalem to make witness to the |
| 5:04 | disciples what they had experienced on |
| 5:06 | the road and in the breaking of the |
| 5:08 | bread |
| 5:10 | these two disciples on the road to |
| 5:13 | Emmaus |
| 5:14 | had just received the first Lord’s |
| 5:17 | Supper |
| 5:18 | from the resurrected Jesus Christ |
| 5:21 | and Christ had given an example a model |
| 5:24 | not only for them but for the whole |
| 5:26 | church and for us to follow |
| 5:29 | for over 20 centuries the people of God |
| 5:32 | have followed this example that is |
| 5:36 | Christian instruction is given |
| 5:39 | that explains who Jesus is and what he |
| 5:43 | has done based upon the holy scriptures |
| 5:48 | this instruction we could call catechism |
| 5:51 | is followed by the administration of |
| 5:54 | one’s First Holy Communion |
| 5:56 | when we first received the true body and |
| 5:59 | blood of our Lord Jesus Christ the |
| 6:02 | savior |
| 6:04 | that was your experience too I suspect |
| 6:07 | as it was mine instruction from Holy |
| 6:11 | Scripture |
| 6:12 | and reception of the body and blood of |
| 6:14 | Christ |
| 6:16 | this is not done once in a lifetime |
| 6:19 | but is a pattern that Christ has left |
| 6:21 | for us to live throughout our lives |
| 6:23 | every week on the first day of the week |
| 6:26 | on the day of the resurrection of Our |
| 6:28 | Lord we journey to the Lord’s House and |
| 6:32 | once again we receive instruction |
| 6:36 | using the mouth of the pastor Jesus |
| 6:39 | Christ |
| 6:40 | teaches and preaches his Divine word to |
| 6:43 | us |
| 6:44 | he gathers us around his table |
| 6:47 | and using the hands and the mouth of the |
| 6:49 | pastor |
| 6:50 | in accordance with his command |
| 6:53 | bread is taken blessed broken and |
| 6:57 | distributed to us |
| 6:59 | and the cup |
| 7:01 | is blessed and given to us |
| 7:04 | the Divine body and blood of Jesus |
| 7:06 | Christ given to us to eat and to drink |
| 7:11 | our spiritual sight is made clear again |
| 7:14 | our eyes of Faith are made strong again |
| 7:18 | the word of Christ has penetrated and |
| 7:20 | blessed us our sins are forgiven |
| 7:23 | like those first disciples on the road |
| 7:25 | to Emmaus we are energized |
| 7:28 | to go quickly and to relate our |
| 7:30 | experiences to others |
| 7:33 | you will tell how you recognized him |
| 7:36 | when he spoke his inspiring word to you |
| 7:38 | and you’ll testify how you believed in |
| 7:40 | him when he gave you the sacred elements |
| 7:43 | of his body and blood for the |
| 7:45 | Forgiveness of your sins and the promise |
| 7:48 | of your eternal life |
| 7:51 | just like those first disciples on the |
| 7:53 | road to Emmaus |
| 7:54 | you will tell |
| 7:56 | that all the crucified and Risen Lord |
| 7:59 | Jesus Christ |
| 8:01 | all that he did |
| 8:03 | he did also for you |
| 8:07 | amen |
