0:09hello
0:11today let’s talk about becoming
0:13Witnesses for Jesus
0:16in the gospel text from Luke chapter 24
0:19we meet two disciples on the road to
0:21Emmaus
0:23they have all the right information
0:25but none of the necessary understanding
0:29they know that Jesus was a prophet
0:31Mighty indeed and word
0:33they know that their Chief priests and
0:35rulers delivered him up to the sentence
0:37of death
0:38and that he was crucified
0:40they know that he died on the cross on
0:43Friday before the Sabbath
0:46they had been hoping that it was he who
0:48was going to redeem Israel
0:51all of the facts are correct
0:53but they’re missing some crucial
0:54insights from Holy Scripture and from
0:57the Holy Spirit
0:59as they are walking they are approached
1:02and then joined by Jesus himself
1:06but their eyes are prevented from
1:08recognizing him
1:10these are some of the Master’s own
1:12disciples why can they not recognize him
1:15and why did Jesus not introduce himself
1:17to them
1:19this is all part of God’s design
1:21and it is instructive for the church and
1:24for us today
1:25so let’s watch and see what happens next
1:30Jesus said to them
1:33what are these words that you are
1:34exchanging with one another as you are
1:37walking
1:38and they stood still looking sad
1:42Jesus asks a question and it almost
1:45appears as though he is a student asking
1:47them for answers
1:50they explain
1:51that there was a man named Jesus he was
1:55mighty in word indeed
1:57he was crucified some three days ago
2:01some women whom they know even claimed
2:04that he was risen from the tomb
2:09it is not long before we see that Jesus
2:11is the real teacher here and they’re the
2:13students
2:14Luke 24 beginning with the 26th verse
2:18Jesus says oh the 25th verse Jesus says
2:24o foolish men and slow of heart to
2:26believe in all that the prophets have
2:28spoken was it not necessary for the
2:31Christ to suffer these things and to
2:33enter into his glory
2:36at this point Jesus begins teaching them
2:39from the Old Testament
2:41from the Books of Moses like genesis
2:44chapter 3 from the prophets like the
2:46prophet Isaiah chapter 53 and from the
2:50Psalms like Psalm 22
2:54Jesus explains that the word of God has
2:57always foretold that Messiah was coming
3:00and that he would accomplish his purpose
3:02of redeeming and saving by means of his
3:05own sacrifice his suffering death and
3:09Resurrection
3:11the walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus was
3:14about seven miles or almost two hours
3:18Jesus was able to provide a good deal of
3:21instruction to his students
3:23perhaps we would even call them
3:25catechism students
3:27as they approached Emmaus they invited
3:29Jesus to stay with them and get
3:31something to eat
3:33once again it looks as though they’re
3:35the leaders they’re they’re taking the
3:37place of the host
3:39but when they recline at the table
3:41it was Jesus who was the real host
3:45he took the bread blessed it broke it
3:48and gave it to them
3:50suddenly
3:52everything was clear
3:54their eyes were opened suddenly they
3:57realized that this was their crucified
4:00now Risen Lord
4:02of course there had to be suffering a
4:05suffering Messiah there had to be a
4:08crucifixion and a Risen Lord
4:11God had declared it for hundreds of
4:13years in his scripture now they
4:15understood
4:16this is the Messiah the Savior this is
4:20our Jesus who has come to redeem Israel
4:23but not at all in the way that we had
4:25thought
4:27he has taken the sin of the world
4:29he has conquered death and the devil
4:32the Lord Jesus who had been crucified is
4:35now the very one who is walking with
4:38them
4:39who is instructing them and who is now
4:42providing them with the sacred meal yes
4:45Jesus is savior but yes Jesus is their
4:49savior
4:51with that
4:53Jesus vanished
4:54and with that
4:56they Rose immediately from the table
4:59and returned seven miles back to
5:01Jerusalem to make witness to the
5:04disciples what they had experienced on
5:06the road and in the breaking of the
5:08bread
5:10these two disciples on the road to
5:13Emmaus
5:14had just received the first Lord’s
5:17Supper
5:18from the resurrected Jesus Christ
5:21and Christ had given an example a model
5:24not only for them but for the whole
5:26church and for us to follow
5:29for over 20 centuries the people of God
5:32have followed this example that is
5:36Christian instruction is given
5:39that explains who Jesus is and what he
5:43has done based upon the holy scriptures
5:48this instruction we could call catechism
5:51is followed by the administration of
5:54one’s First Holy Communion
5:56when we first received the true body and
5:59blood of our Lord Jesus Christ the
6:02savior
6:04that was your experience too I suspect
6:07as it was mine instruction from Holy
6:11Scripture
6:12and reception of the body and blood of
6:14Christ
6:16this is not done once in a lifetime
6:19but is a pattern that Christ has left
6:21for us to live throughout our lives
6:23every week on the first day of the week
6:26on the day of the resurrection of Our
6:28Lord we journey to the Lord’s House and
6:32once again we receive instruction
6:36using the mouth of the pastor Jesus
6:39Christ
6:40teaches and preaches his Divine word to
6:43us
6:44he gathers us around his table
6:47and using the hands and the mouth of the
6:49pastor
6:50in accordance with his command
6:53bread is taken blessed broken and
6:57distributed to us
6:59and the cup
7:01is blessed and given to us
7:04the Divine body and blood of Jesus
7:06Christ given to us to eat and to drink
7:11our spiritual sight is made clear again
7:14our eyes of Faith are made strong again
7:18the word of Christ has penetrated and
7:20blessed us our sins are forgiven
7:23like those first disciples on the road
7:25to Emmaus we are energized
7:28to go quickly and to relate our
7:30experiences to others
7:33you will tell how you recognized him
7:36when he spoke his inspiring word to you
7:38and you’ll testify how you believed in
7:40him when he gave you the sacred elements
7:43of his body and blood for the
7:45Forgiveness of your sins and the promise
7:48of your eternal life
7:51just like those first disciples on the
7:53road to Emmaus
7:54you will tell
7:56that all the crucified and Risen Lord
7:59Jesus Christ
8:01all that he did
8:03he did also for you
8:07amen
