| 0:15 | hello |
| 0:20 | today |
| 0:22 | let’s talk about Glory |
| 0:25 | the high Priestly prayer of Jesus is |
| 0:28 | found in John’s gospel chapter 17. |
| 0:31 | this prayer is an intimate conversation |
| 0:34 | between the Son of God and the heavenly |
| 0:37 | father |
| 0:39 | Central in the prayer is the idea of |
| 0:42 | Glory |
| 0:44 | John 17 verse 1 |
| 0:48 | these things Jesus spoke and lifting up |
| 0:51 | his eyes to Heaven he said |
| 0:53 | father the hour has come |
| 0:56 | glorify thy son that the son may glorify |
| 1:00 | thee |
| 1:02 | yes Glory |
| 1:04 | is a prominent theme in the high |
| 1:07 | Priestly prayer of Jesus |
| 1:09 | however we must understand right from |
| 1:12 | the beginning |
| 1:13 | that the father and the son have a |
| 1:15 | concept of Glory that is decidedly |
| 1:17 | different from the idea of Glory that |
| 1:20 | you and I may have |
| 1:23 | when we think of Glory we may think of |
| 1:25 | the Glory Days we may remember our |
| 1:29 | personal days of Glory When We Were |
| 1:31 | Young and fit or energetic and happy |
| 1:34 | we might think weren’t we glorious |
| 1:38 | but that’s that’s not what God is |
| 1:41 | talking about here |
| 1:43 | God’s ways are not our ways and his |
| 1:46 | thoughts are not our thoughts God’s idea |
| 1:49 | of Glory is not like yours and mine |
| 1:54 | God discloses himself |
| 1:57 | in the paradox |
| 1:59 | he hides himself in the unexpected |
| 2:04 | Luther writes in his Heidelberg |
| 2:06 | disputation |
| 2:09 | he who does not know Christ |
| 2:12 | does not know God hidden in suffering |
| 2:16 | therefore he the one who does not know |
| 2:19 | Christ prefers Works to suffering |
| 2:25 | glory to the cross |
| 2:27 | strength to weakness wisdom to Folly and |
| 2:31 | in general good to evil |
| 2:35 | end quote |
| 2:37 | but God chooses suffering |
| 2:41 | the cross weakness |
| 2:44 | this is the opposite of how we think |
| 2:47 | how does God display his glory |
| 2:50 | God the Father chooses the way of the |
| 2:53 | Cross and God the son receives the cross |
| 2:57 | as a gift |
| 2:59 | the Cross of Christ |
| 3:02 | that is where we see the glory of God |
| 3:07 | one |
| 3:09 | glorify thy son |
| 3:11 | so let’s return to that first verse of |
| 3:13 | John 17 when Jesus prays father the hour |
| 3:16 | has come glorify thy son that thy son |
| 3:20 | may glorify thee |
| 3:23 | when Jesus asked the father to glorify |
| 3:25 | him glorify thy son |
| 3:27 | what does he mean |
| 3:30 | the full display of the glory of the son |
| 3:34 | of God |
| 3:35 | is made manifest in the crucifixion |
| 3:39 | the Cross of Christ is the Throne of his |
| 3:43 | glory |
| 3:43 | it is the means of his glorification |
| 3:48 | from before the foundation of the world |
| 3:50 | the father Son and Holy Spirit |
| 3:53 | knew that the cross was the way of |
| 3:56 | salvation for sinful Humanity |
| 3:59 | Jesus came to do the work that the |
| 4:02 | father had given him to do |
| 4:05 | that is |
| 4:06 | to take upon himself the sins of the |
| 4:09 | world |
| 4:10 | to appease the wrath of God |
| 4:14 | to Bear the punishment of humanity |
| 4:18 | and to overcome death and the devil |
| 4:21 | surely to redeem all who believe |
| 4:26 | please notice the use of the words gift |
| 4:30 | and give throughout this prayer |
| 4:34 | Jesus makes it clear that the |
| 4:36 | responsibility of providing the atoning |
| 4:39 | sacrifice vicarious suffering and |
| 4:42 | life-giving death has been given to him |
| 4:46 | by the father |
| 4:48 | this was not a burden it was a gift |
| 4:53 | for by means of the cross the Son of God |
| 4:56 | would bring glory to the father |
| 4:58 | by means of the cross the glory of the |
| 5:01 | son would be revealed |
| 5:04 | by means of the cross |
| 5:07 | the Lamb of God the sacrificial |
| 5:09 | suffering savior |
| 5:11 | would be revealed to you |
| 5:15 | the heart of God |
| 5:17 | the obedient offering of God the son |
| 5:21 | a gift for your salvation |
| 5:25 | as strange and counter-intuitive as it |
| 5:28 | may seem to us |
| 5:30 | the humiliated and despised figure on |
| 5:33 | The Good Friday cross is the means that |
| 5:35 | God gives to you |
| 5:37 | to know your lord and savior |
| 5:40 | and your savior Jesus is the only way |
| 5:42 | that you can truly know God your |
| 5:45 | heavenly father |
| 5:47 | so when Jesus prays that God the Father |
| 5:50 | will glorify the son |
| 5:54 | he means that it is his glory to offer |
| 5:57 | the sacrifice of the cross |
| 6:00 | that will demonstrate the passionate |
| 6:03 | mercy and love of God the Father for |
| 6:06 | each of his precious children |
| 6:09 | remember it is by faith in the cross and |
| 6:13 | the savior |
| 6:14 | that you and every believer are saved |
| 6:18 | it is not by might or Merit it is not by |
| 6:21 | our own goodness or saintliness it is by |
| 6:25 | grace through faith that the Glorious |
| 6:28 | savior on the cross |
| 6:30 | has saved you |
| 6:32 | your salvation |
| 6:34 | is the glory of Jesus |
| 6:38 | point two |
| 6:41 | that the Son of God May glorify thee |
| 6:45 | the second part of verse 1 |
| 6:47 | asks that the Sun May glorify Thee the |
| 6:51 | father |
| 6:53 | so how will Jesus |
| 6:55 | bring glory to the father |
| 6:58 | Jesus will make the father known through |
| 7:02 | the cross |
| 7:04 | without the cross |
| 7:06 | what ideas |
| 7:07 | would we have of God we would have to |
| 7:10 | manufacture them ourselves some |
| 7:13 | misshapen or self-created God |
| 7:17 | the false god |
| 7:18 | would be based upon our reason or our |
| 7:22 | emotions our fears or our selfishness |
| 7:27 | but |
| 7:28 | if you want to know God truly |
| 7:31 | the heart and mind of God the Father in |
| 7:33 | heaven |
| 7:35 | then you must look at the cross of Jesus |
| 7:38 | Christ |
| 7:39 | that is the only place where we can look |
| 7:42 | in order to know the truth about God |
| 7:44 | with absolute certainty |
| 7:49 | on the cross |
| 7:51 | we see the Holiness and righteousness of |
| 7:53 | God |
| 7:54 | who makes us holy and righteous by grace |
| 7:59 | through faith |
| 8:01 | through faith |
| 8:03 | God enacts and exchange that joins Jesus |
| 8:07 | to your sin sickness and joins you to |
| 8:12 | his holy righteousness |
| 8:15 | Jesus joins himself to you |
| 8:18 | and he takes all of your penalty and |
| 8:22 | gives you all of his Blessing |
| 8:25 | this is accomplished |
| 8:27 | on the cross |
| 8:29 | for you by grace through faith |
| 8:33 | in this way the Sun glorifies the father |
| 8:35 | by exhibiting the immeasurable Limitless |
| 8:39 | expanse of the father’s Mercy |
| 8:41 | forgiveness and love |
| 8:46 | beloved |
| 8:48 | so often |
| 8:50 | we misunderstand the father |
| 8:53 | and we |
| 8:55 | underestimate and limit |
| 8:57 | his mercy and his love |
| 9:00 | this is because we misjudge his |
| 9:03 | willingness and his determination to |
| 9:06 | forgive us and to save us |
| 9:08 | the mission of the son |
| 9:11 | was to proclaim the father |
| 9:14 | and to make the father known |
| 9:16 | this is how Jesus glorified the father |
| 9:19 | by teaching you and all Humanity about |
| 9:22 | the father’s loving Plan of Salvation |
| 9:27 | the son glorified the father by making |
| 9:30 | the father known and by being obedient |
| 9:33 | to the father’s plan |
| 9:36 | Jesus explained it this way |
| 9:38 | quote |
| 9:40 | this is eternal life |
| 9:43 | that they may Know Thee |
| 9:45 | the only true God |
| 9:47 | and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent |
| 9:51 | end quote |
| 9:53 | we know the father |
| 9:55 | by means of the son and his cross |
| 9:58 | when the savior is worshiped and praised |
| 10:01 | the father is glorified |
| 10:06 | point three |
| 10:09 | the glory which thou has given me |
| 10:12 | I have given to them |
| 10:17 | our reading for today |
| 10:20 | only goes as far as verse 11 to tell you |
| 10:24 | the truth |
| 10:25 | we haven’t gotten past verse one so far |
| 10:29 | but if you continue to read the prayer |
| 10:31 | of Jesus just a little bit further |
| 10:34 | you’ll find a precious gift of enormous |
| 10:37 | importance |
| 10:39 | you see this God of paradoxes |
| 10:42 | and unexpected opposites |
| 10:45 | has one more surprise in store for you |
| 10:49 | it is not only the father and the son |
| 10:52 | who have Glory |
| 10:54 | but they have determined to share their |
| 10:57 | Glory with you |
| 10:59 | this is |
| 11:01 | unimaginable incredible |
| 11:04 | but Jesus declares this truth in the |
| 11:08 | midst of his Divine conversation with |
| 11:11 | the heavenly father |
| 11:14 | verse 20. |
| 11:16 | the glory which thou has given me |
| 11:20 | I have given to you |
| 11:22 | that they may be one just as We Are One |
| 11:25 | I misspoke that was verse 22. |
| 11:31 | the glory which thou has given me I have |
| 11:33 | given to them that they may be one just |
| 11:36 | as We Are One |
| 11:38 | do you really have the glory of Jesus |
| 11:40 | Christ do I have the glory of Jesus |
| 11:43 | Christ how is that possible |
| 11:46 | the answer is given in the very next |
| 11:48 | verse verse 23 |
| 11:50 | i in them and thou in me |
| 11:54 | you do have the glory of Jesus the son |
| 11:57 | of God |
| 11:59 | because Jesus himself |
| 12:01 | is already in you |
| 12:04 | what a wonderful mystery that Jesus the |
| 12:07 | son of God can and does live in the |
| 12:09 | heart of every believer |
| 12:14 | now let me tell you three mysteries |
| 12:17 | one |
| 12:18 | it is a mystery of God that Jesus can be |
| 12:22 | and is |
| 12:24 | both fully human and fully divine |
| 12:28 | he has a human nature and a divine |
| 12:30 | nature such that his human nature is |
| 12:33 | able to share in his Divine attributes |
| 12:36 | and actions |
| 12:39 | this was true during his Earthly |
| 12:40 | Ministry and is even more evident now in |
| 12:43 | his glorified state |
| 12:46 | this is called a communication of |
| 12:48 | attributes so that his human and divine |
| 12:51 | Natures share attributes and actions and |
| 12:55 | Majesty |
| 12:58 | second |
| 13:00 | a second mystery |
| 13:03 | is found in the sacrament of holy |
| 13:05 | communion |
| 13:07 | another sharing of Earthly and divine |
| 13:10 | elements takes place |
| 13:13 | the body and blood of Christ are truly |
| 13:16 | and substantially present in with and |
| 13:19 | under |
| 13:19 | the forms of consecrated Bread and Wine |
| 13:23 | The Bread and Wine are present |
| 13:26 | but so are the true body and blood of |
| 13:29 | our Lord and savior |
| 13:31 | how is it possible |
| 13:33 | it is so because Jesus has said so |
| 13:37 | this |
| 13:39 | is my body |
| 13:41 | this is my blood |
| 13:44 | a second mystery |
| 13:46 | and now a third mystery a final one a |
| 13:50 | final example of the communication of |
| 13:52 | attributes where Earthly and Heavenly |
| 13:55 | elements coexist |
| 13:58 | our lord Jesus has said |
| 14:01 | that he will be in you |
| 14:05 | in all of those who believe in him |
| 14:08 | he himself is in US |
| 14:11 | not only does Jesus Christ share his |
| 14:14 | peace his joy and his life-giving word |
| 14:17 | of salvation |
| 14:19 | but Jesus shares himself |
| 14:23 | you have Jesus living within you |
| 14:27 | by his presence you have his peace his |
| 14:31 | joy and his word |
| 14:33 | indeed you have Jesus himself within you |
| 14:37 | always and everywhere |
| 14:41 | so |
| 14:43 | because Jesus is within you |
| 14:47 | you have Heavenly Glory within you right |
| 14:50 | now |
| 14:51 | receive this blessing |
| 14:54 | and because Jesus is within you at the |
| 14:57 | last day you’ll be glorified forever |
| 15:00 | with all of the Saints in light |
| 15:02 | receive and understand that gift |
| 15:05 | if you can |
| 15:09 | today |
| 15:10 | we’ve looked at the high Priestly prayer |
| 15:13 | of our Lord Jesus Christ as recorded in |
| 15:16 | John chapter 17. |
| 15:18 | we’ve heard Jesus glorify God the Father |
| 15:22 | even as Jesus prayed that God the father |
| 15:25 | would glorify him |
| 15:28 | but you also heard |
| 15:30 | that Jesus has given you his glory |
| 15:33 | Jesus has joined you to himself |
| 15:37 | even as Jesus has joined all Christians |
| 15:40 | to one another |
| 15:42 | this too |
| 15:44 | is his glory |
| 15:47 | amen |
