| 0:48 | another example is how the Passover meal |
| 0:51 | and the Deliverance of the Israelites |
| 0:53 | from slavery in Egypt are types or |
| 0:56 | Shadows of the Fulfillment in the Lord’s |
| 0:59 | supper and Christ’s Deliverance of all |
| 1:02 | believers from the slavery of sin death |

| 1:06 | today we’re going to talk about the |
| 1:09 | Jewish Feast of Weeks as a type or a |
| 1:13 | shadow of its fulfillment in the |
| 1:15 | Christian Festival of Pentecost |
| 1:18 | in the Old Testament the Feast of Weeks |
| 1:20 | was a celebration of the Harvest as |
| 1:23 | recorded in Deuteronomy 16. |
| 1:27 | it occurred exactly a week of weeks or |
| 1:29 | 50 days after the Passover |
| 1:32 | the law commanded that a free will |
| 1:34 | serial offering be made in the form of |
| 1:37 | two loaves of bread and Libations or |
| 1:40 | drink offerings please see Leviticus |
| 1:43 | chapter 23. the law also commanded that |
| 1:47 | all persons should Rejoice men and women |
| 1:49 | Sons and Daughters servants and Masters |
| 1:52 | foreigners and mourners see Deuteronomy |
| 1:56 | chapter 16. |
| 1:58 | on this day there was to be no work for |
| 2:00 | anyone very nice |
| 2:02 | by the time of the First Century A.D the |
| 2:05 | Feast of Weeks or Shavuot as it was |
| 2:07 | called in Hebrew had begun to include |
| 2:10 | another element of Celebration the |
| 2:13 | commemoration of God’s Gift of the Ten |
| 2:15 | Commandments |
| 2:17 | on Sinai God had revealed his glory to |
| 2:20 | Moses and his chosen people see Exodus |
| 2:23 | chapter 19. |
| 2:25 | through the law which he had engraved |
| 2:27 | with his own finger God joined himself |
| 2:29 | to the people in Covenant |
| 2:31 | Shavuot worship included the reading of |
| 2:35 | The Commandments |
| 2:36 | also it included reading the book of |
| 2:38 | Ruth the story of the moabitus this |
| 2:41 | story was chosen not only because it |
| 2:43 | took place during the time of the |
| 2:45 | Harvest but especially because it |
| 2:47 | emphasized God’s blessing upon all the |
| 2:50 | nations Ruth The Foreigner became the |
| 2:53 | great grandmother of King David God’s |
| 2:56 | message was a word of Grace for all |
| 2:58 | people Jew and Gentile alike |
| 3:02 | so we can scarcely imagine the |
| 3:04 | excitement of God’s people during the |
| 3:05 | Feast of Weeks this is true especially |
| 3:08 | in David’s City Jerusalem servants and |
| 3:10 | Masters men and women Levites and |
| 3:13 | foreigners all were freed from work and |
| 3:15 | commanded to make pilgrimage to the |
| 3:18 | great feast God’s people recipients of |
| 3:21 | God’s covenants and Commandments were |
| 3:24 | feasting on the Harvest of God’s land |
| 3:27 | the account of the Acts of the Apostles |
| 3:30 | sets just such a scene for the location |
| 3:33 | of Simon Peter’s first Christian sermon |
| 3:36 | and the birth of the Christian Church |
| 3:38 | you’ll read about this in Acts chapter |
| 3:41 | 2 |
| 3:42 | but there’s one more piece to the Old |
| 3:45 | Testament story |
| 3:46 | that we need to bear in mind before we |
| 3:49 | consider the Christian celebration of |
| 3:50 | Pentecost |
| 3:52 | so you remember that Moses led the |
| 3:56 | people out of slavery |
| 3:57 | through the Red Sea and Into the |
| 4:00 | Wilderness they were afraid to enter the |
| 4:02 | promised land and so they wandered in |
| 4:05 | the wilderness for 40 years |
| 4:08 | but during their wandering God provided |
| 4:10 | for them food to eat manna bread from |
| 4:14 | Heaven their clothes did not wear out |
| 4:16 | their sandals did not wear out |
| 4:18 | they had God’s presence in the form of a |
| 4:21 | pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of |
| 4:24 | Fire by night |
| 4:25 | but still the Israelites grumbled about |
| 4:28 | their bread |
| 4:29 | they grumbled so much that Moses |
| 4:31 | complained to God about the people |
| 4:34 | so |
| 4:35 | as recorded in Numbers Chapter 11 |
| 4:41 | the Lord did two things first he told |
| 4:44 | Moses that he would miraculously provide |
| 4:46 | meat for the Israelites |
| 4:49 | so much meat that they would grow sick |
| 4:51 | of it |
| 4:52 | second God told Moses to bring 70 elders |
| 4:58 | bring them to the tent of meeting |
| 5:00 | God would come down and speak with him |
| 5:03 | himself |
| 5:05 | well that would be terrifying |
| 5:08 | God’s spirit rested upon Moses |
| 5:11 | but now God would take of the spirit |
| 5:13 | that was upon Moses and put the spirit |
| 5:16 | on the elders also that they should bear |
| 5:19 | the burden of the people along with |
| 5:21 | Moses |
| 5:23 | so the Lord came down in the cloud and |
| 5:26 | spoke to Moses god shared the spirit |
| 5:28 | with the elders |
| 5:30 | and they began to prophesy |
| 5:33 | here’s what’s interesting |
| 5:36 | two of the elders were not present at |
| 5:38 | the tent of meeting |
| 5:39 | eldad and may dad |
| 5:42 | for some reason they remained in the |
| 5:45 | camp and did not go to the tent |
| 5:48 | but God chose to place his Spirit upon |
| 5:50 | them anyway |
| 5:52 | and they began to prophesy in the camp |
| 5:55 | Joshua saw this in random Moses telling |
| 5:58 | Moses to make them stop |
| 6:00 | but Moses said |
| 6:02 | would that all the Lord’s people were |
| 6:04 | prophets that the Lord would put his |
| 6:06 | Spirit upon them all |
| 6:09 | this was prophetic of course |
| 6:11 | for it was the desire of God to put his |
| 6:14 | Spirit upon all the people |
| 6:16 | but that would not take place until |
| 6:19 | after the glorification of Jesus |
| 6:22 | now back to the time of Christ |
| 6:26 | it was the week of weeks or 50 days |
| 6:28 | since |
| 6:30 | the day of the Passover |
| 6:33 | the followers of Jesus had seen the |
| 6:35 | resurrected Lord on several occasions |
| 6:37 | they had heard his promise to send the |
| 6:40 | Holy Spirit to them they had seen his |
| 6:43 | miraculous Ascension to the father |
| 6:45 | now it was the Feast of Shavuot |
| 6:48 | they were gathered together in one place |
| 6:51 | suddenly a sound like a rushing wind |
| 6:54 | filled the house |
| 6:56 | the word for wind and the word for |
| 6:58 | Spirit or the same word in both Hebrew |
| 7:01 | and Greek |
| 7:02 | there appeared tongues as a fire resting |
| 7:05 | upon them fire was also a manifestation |
| 7:08 | used by God to demonstrate his spirit |
| 7:11 | all of them were filled with the Holy |
| 7:13 | Spirit and began to speak with other |
| 7:15 | tongues by the power of the Holy Spirit |
| 7:19 | there were in Jerusalem Jews from all |
| 7:21 | around the world at the sound of the |
| 7:24 | wind and of the disciples speaking in |
| 7:26 | other languages people began to come |
| 7:29 | together |
| 7:31 | parthians and medes elamites and |
| 7:34 | residents of Mesopotamia Judea |
| 7:37 | Cappadocia Pontius and Asia phrygia and |
| 7:41 | pamphilia Egypt and Libya Cyrene |
| 7:44 | visitors from Rome cretans and Arabs all |
| 7:49 | were hearing the mighty Deeds of God in |
| 7:51 | their own languages |
| 7:53 | then Peter explained that this was |
| 7:56 | the Fulfillment of what the prophets |
| 7:58 | foretold the outpouring of the Holy |
| 8:01 | Spirit and the word of the Lord coming |
| 8:03 | upon sons and daughters young and old |
| 8:06 | slave and free upon all the people |
| 8:09 | Peter explained that Jesus of Nazareth |
| 8:12 | was sent by God attested by signs and |
| 8:16 | great wonders he was crucified and put |
| 8:19 | to death in order to fulfill the |
| 8:20 | scriptures but God raised him up to life |
| 8:23 | and his disciples are his witnesses that |
| 8:26 | Jesus is both Lord and Christ |
| 8:29 | now in the name of Jesus the people |
| 8:32 | should repent of their sins and be |
| 8:34 | baptized for the Forgiveness of sins and |
| 8:37 | for the promise of eternal life and they |
| 8:40 | too will receive the gift of the Holy |
| 8:42 | Spirit |
| 8:44 | the Pentecost gift of the Holy Spirit |
| 8:47 | was the perfect fulfillment of the |
| 8:50 | Jewish feast of weeks |
| 8:53 | before God had shown forth his glory to |
| 8:55 | Moses in a burning bush |
| 8:57 | now tongues of Holy Fire rested on all |
| 9:01 | the disciples before God had engraved |
| 9:04 | his law on tablets of stone |
| 9:07 | now the law of God was written by the |
| 9:09 | Holy Spirit on the hearts of Flesh |
| 9:12 | before God’s people had gathered to |
| 9:15 | praise God for the in-gathering of new |
| 9:16 | grain but now the infant Church rejoiced |
| 9:19 | in the Harvest of new Believers in Jesus |
| 9:22 | Christ from every corner of the world |
| 9:26 | before God had commanded that they offer |
| 9:29 | loaves of bread and Libations as a thank |
| 9:33 | offering but now the Son of God told |
| 9:36 | them |
| 9:37 | that they should take bread |
| 9:39 | and a cup and by faith and by his word |
| 9:42 | they would receive the true body and |
| 9:45 | blood of their lord Jesus Christ |
| 9:50 | the Feast of Weeks was composed of |
| 9:52 | several important ingredients a fiery |
| 9:55 | Bush Commandments of stone a spring |
| 9:57 | Harvest two loaves and a libation and a |
| 10:00 | multicultural anniversary |
| 10:03 | but 50 days after the death and |
| 10:05 | resurrection of Jesus Christ God |
| 10:08 | transformed the ancient observance into |
| 10:11 | a miraculous new celebration |
| 10:14 | the one holy Christian and Apostolic |
| 10:16 | church was born of tongues of fire |
| 10:19 | written on hearts of Flesh |
| 10:21 | the body and blood of Christ and Peter’s |
| 10:24 | first sermon that yielded a harvest of |
| 10:27 | faith in the lives of three thousand |
| 10:29 | people from all around the world |
| 10:32 | the new Believers were so excited that |
| 10:34 | some people thought that they were drunk |
| 10:37 | through laughter and joy they explained |
| 10:40 | that this was just as God had promised |
| 10:42 | God had poured out his holy spirit |
| 10:46 | you may wonder what does this mean that |
| 10:49 | we also have the Holy Spirit yes indeed |
| 10:52 | how do we know that |
| 10:55 | that was also part of Peter’s sermon in |
| 10:57 | Acts chapter 2. |
| 10:59 | repent and let each of you be baptized |
| 11:03 | in the name of Jesus Christ for the |
| 11:06 | Forgiveness of sins and you shall |
| 11:08 | receive the gift of the Holy Spirit |
| 11:11 | for the promises for you and for your |
| 11:13 | children |
| 11:14 | for all who are far off as many as the |
| 11:17 | Lord Our God shall call to himself |
| 11:21 | have you been baptized with water and |
| 11:24 | the word according to the command of |
| 11:27 | Jesus Christ |
| 11:28 | if the answer is yes then beloved This |
| 11:32 | Promise is also for you you too have |
| 11:36 | received the gift of the Holy Spirit now |
| 11:39 | you know something of the history of the |
| 11:42 | festival that you celebrate today |
| 11:46 | happy Pentecost |
