0:09and death
0:14hello
0:16today let’s talk about Jewish
0:19antecedents to Pentecost
0:21I suspect that you are already familiar
0:23with the idea of an Old Testament person
0:26or event serving as a type or shadow of
0:30its fulfillment in the New Testament for
0:32example Peter’s first epistle chapter 3
0:35tells how Noah and his family passed
0:38through the waters of the flood
0:40Peter explains that this is a type or a
0:42shadow of its fulfillment in the
0:45Christian who passes through the waters
0:46of holy baptism
0:48another example is how the Passover meal
0:51and the Deliverance of the Israelites
0:53from slavery in Egypt are types or
0:56Shadows of the Fulfillment in the Lord’s
0:59supper and Christ’s Deliverance of all
1:02believers from the slavery of sin death
1:04and the devil
1:06today we’re going to talk about the
1:09Jewish Feast of Weeks as a type or a
1:13shadow of its fulfillment in the
1:15Christian Festival of Pentecost
1:18in the Old Testament the Feast of Weeks
1:20was a celebration of the Harvest as
1:23recorded in Deuteronomy 16.
1:27it occurred exactly a week of weeks or
1:2950 days after the Passover
1:32the law commanded that a free will
1:34serial offering be made in the form of
1:37two loaves of bread and Libations or
1:40drink offerings please see Leviticus
1:43chapter 23. the law also commanded that
1:47all persons should Rejoice men and women
1:49Sons and Daughters servants and Masters
1:52foreigners and mourners see Deuteronomy
1:56chapter 16.
1:58on this day there was to be no work for
2:00anyone very nice
2:02by the time of the First Century A.D the
2:05Feast of Weeks or Shavuot as it was
2:07called in Hebrew had begun to include
2:10another element of Celebration the
2:13commemoration of God’s Gift of the Ten
2:15Commandments
2:17on Sinai God had revealed his glory to
2:20Moses and his chosen people see Exodus
2:23chapter 19.
2:25through the law which he had engraved
2:27with his own finger God joined himself
2:29to the people in Covenant
2:31Shavuot worship included the reading of
2:35The Commandments
2:36also it included reading the book of
2:38Ruth the story of the moabitus this
2:41story was chosen not only because it
2:43took place during the time of the
2:45Harvest but especially because it
2:47emphasized God’s blessing upon all the
2:50nations Ruth The Foreigner became the
2:53great grandmother of King David God’s
2:56message was a word of Grace for all
2:58people Jew and Gentile alike
3:02so we can scarcely imagine the
3:04excitement of God’s people during the
3:05Feast of Weeks this is true especially
3:08in David’s City Jerusalem servants and
3:10Masters men and women Levites and
3:13foreigners all were freed from work and
3:15commanded to make pilgrimage to the
3:18great feast God’s people recipients of
3:21God’s covenants and Commandments were
3:24feasting on the Harvest of God’s land
3:27the account of the Acts of the Apostles
3:30sets just such a scene for the location
3:33of Simon Peter’s first Christian sermon
3:36and the birth of the Christian Church
3:38you’ll read about this in Acts chapter
3:412
3:42but there’s one more piece to the Old
3:45Testament story
3:46that we need to bear in mind before we
3:49consider the Christian celebration of
3:50Pentecost
3:52so you remember that Moses led the
3:56people out of slavery
3:57through the Red Sea and Into the
4:00Wilderness they were afraid to enter the
4:02promised land and so they wandered in
4:05the wilderness for 40 years
4:08but during their wandering God provided
4:10for them food to eat manna bread from
4:14Heaven their clothes did not wear out
4:16their sandals did not wear out
4:18they had God’s presence in the form of a
4:21pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of
4:24Fire by night
4:25but still the Israelites grumbled about
4:28their bread
4:29they grumbled so much that Moses
4:31complained to God about the people
4:34so
4:35as recorded in Numbers Chapter 11
4:41the Lord did two things first he told
4:44Moses that he would miraculously provide
4:46meat for the Israelites
4:49so much meat that they would grow sick
4:51of it
4:52second God told Moses to bring 70 elders
4:58bring them to the tent of meeting
5:00God would come down and speak with him
5:03himself
5:05well that would be terrifying
5:08God’s spirit rested upon Moses
5:11but now God would take of the spirit
5:13that was upon Moses and put the spirit
5:16on the elders also that they should bear
5:19the burden of the people along with
5:21Moses
5:23so the Lord came down in the cloud and
5:26spoke to Moses god shared the spirit
5:28with the elders
5:30and they began to prophesy
5:33here’s what’s interesting
5:36two of the elders were not present at
5:38the tent of meeting
5:39eldad and may dad
5:42for some reason they remained in the
5:45camp and did not go to the tent
5:48but God chose to place his Spirit upon
5:50them anyway
5:52and they began to prophesy in the camp
5:55Joshua saw this in random Moses telling
5:58Moses to make them stop
6:00but Moses said
6:02would that all the Lord’s people were
6:04prophets that the Lord would put his
6:06Spirit upon them all
6:09this was prophetic of course
6:11for it was the desire of God to put his
6:14Spirit upon all the people
6:16but that would not take place until
6:19after the glorification of Jesus
6:22now back to the time of Christ
6:26it was the week of weeks or 50 days
6:28since
6:30the day of the Passover
6:33the followers of Jesus had seen the
6:35resurrected Lord on several occasions
6:37they had heard his promise to send the
6:40Holy Spirit to them they had seen his
6:43miraculous Ascension to the father
6:45now it was the Feast of Shavuot
6:48they were gathered together in one place
6:51suddenly a sound like a rushing wind
6:54filled the house
6:56the word for wind and the word for
6:58Spirit or the same word in both Hebrew
7:01and Greek
7:02there appeared tongues as a fire resting
7:05upon them fire was also a manifestation
7:08used by God to demonstrate his spirit
7:11all of them were filled with the Holy
7:13Spirit and began to speak with other
7:15tongues by the power of the Holy Spirit
7:19there were in Jerusalem Jews from all
7:21around the world at the sound of the
7:24wind and of the disciples speaking in
7:26other languages people began to come
7:29together
7:31parthians and medes elamites and
7:34residents of Mesopotamia Judea
7:37Cappadocia Pontius and Asia phrygia and
7:41pamphilia Egypt and Libya Cyrene
7:44visitors from Rome cretans and Arabs all
7:49were hearing the mighty Deeds of God in
7:51their own languages
7:53then Peter explained that this was
7:56the Fulfillment of what the prophets
7:58foretold the outpouring of the Holy
8:01Spirit and the word of the Lord coming
8:03upon sons and daughters young and old
8:06slave and free upon all the people
8:09Peter explained that Jesus of Nazareth
8:12was sent by God attested by signs and
8:16great wonders he was crucified and put
8:19to death in order to fulfill the
8:20scriptures but God raised him up to life
8:23and his disciples are his witnesses that
8:26Jesus is both Lord and Christ
8:29now in the name of Jesus the people
8:32should repent of their sins and be
8:34baptized for the Forgiveness of sins and
8:37for the promise of eternal life and they
8:40too will receive the gift of the Holy
8:42Spirit
8:44the Pentecost gift of the Holy Spirit
8:47was the perfect fulfillment of the
8:50Jewish feast of weeks
8:53before God had shown forth his glory to
8:55Moses in a burning bush
8:57now tongues of Holy Fire rested on all
9:01the disciples before God had engraved
9:04his law on tablets of stone
9:07now the law of God was written by the
9:09Holy Spirit on the hearts of Flesh
9:12before God’s people had gathered to
9:15praise God for the in-gathering of new
9:16grain but now the infant Church rejoiced
9:19in the Harvest of new Believers in Jesus
9:22Christ from every corner of the world
9:26before God had commanded that they offer
9:29loaves of bread and Libations as a thank
9:33offering but now the Son of God told
9:36them
9:37that they should take bread
9:39and a cup and by faith and by his word
9:42they would receive the true body and
9:45blood of their lord Jesus Christ
9:50the Feast of Weeks was composed of
9:52several important ingredients a fiery
9:55Bush Commandments of stone a spring
9:57Harvest two loaves and a libation and a
10:00multicultural anniversary
10:03but 50 days after the death and
10:05resurrection of Jesus Christ God
10:08transformed the ancient observance into
10:11a miraculous new celebration
10:14the one holy Christian and Apostolic
10:16church was born of tongues of fire
10:19written on hearts of Flesh
10:21the body and blood of Christ and Peter’s
10:24first sermon that yielded a harvest of
10:27faith in the lives of three thousand
10:29people from all around the world
10:32the new Believers were so excited that
10:34some people thought that they were drunk
10:37through laughter and joy they explained
10:40that this was just as God had promised
10:42God had poured out his holy spirit
10:46you may wonder what does this mean that
10:49we also have the Holy Spirit yes indeed
10:52how do we know that
10:55that was also part of Peter’s sermon in
10:57Acts chapter 2.
10:59repent and let each of you be baptized
11:03in the name of Jesus Christ for the
11:06Forgiveness of sins and you shall
11:08receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
11:11for the promises for you and for your
11:13children
11:14for all who are far off as many as the
11:17Lord Our God shall call to himself
11:21have you been baptized with water and
11:24the word according to the command of
11:27Jesus Christ
11:28if the answer is yes then beloved This
11:32Promise is also for you you too have
11:36received the gift of the Holy Spirit now
