| 0:14 | hello |
| 0:17 | today let’s talk about the Divine name |
| 0:22 | at the end of the Gospel of Matthew the |
| 0:24 | 28th chapter Jesus says |
| 0:27 | all authority has been given to me in |
| 0:30 | heaven and on Earth go therefore and |
| 0:32 | Make Disciples of all Nations baptizing |
| 0:35 | them in the name of the father and of |
| 0:38 | the son and of the Holy Spirit |
| 0:41 | when you are baptized into the death and |
| 0:44 | resurrection of Jesus Christ |
| 0:46 | you are clothed with the Divine name |
| 0:49 | that is to say the pastor who |
| 0:52 | represented Jesus declared |
| 0:54 | I baptize you in the name of the father |
| 0:57 | and of the son and of the Holy Spirit |
| 1:01 | now similarly at the beginning of every |
| 1:03 | worship service you and all the other |
| 1:04 | baptized are gathered together in him |
| 1:07 | gathered in the name of the father and |
| 1:10 | the Son and the Holy Spirit and at the |
| 1:12 | close of the service you and your |
| 1:14 | baptized brothers and sisters are |
| 1:15 | blessed and sent out in the Divine name |
| 1:19 | in the name of the father and the Son |
| 1:22 | and the Holy Spirit |
| 1:23 | also Luther admonished Us in his small |
| 1:26 | catechism to begin each and every day |
| 1:30 | and to end the day |
| 1:32 | by Crossing ourselves and saying the |
| 1:35 | Divine name in the name of the father |
| 1:37 | and of the son and of the Holy Spirit |
| 1:41 | what is the significance of this Divine |
| 1:44 | name for you |
| 1:45 | the name that you received at Holy |
| 1:47 | baptism |
| 1:49 | holy baptism is the sacred Act of |
| 1:53 | placing the Divine name upon one who is |
| 1:56 | helpless ungodly sinful and an enemy of |
| 2:00 | God |
| 2:01 | for that of course is exactly what we |
| 2:03 | were prior to our baptism |
| 2:04 | so says Romans chapter 5 verses 6 |
| 2:07 | through 10. I suspect that you already |
| 2:09 | know what happens in the sacred bath |
| 2:13 | the one baptized receives the |
| 2:15 | Forgiveness of sins and the gift of the |
| 2:18 | Holy Spirit Acts chapter 2 verse 38 the |
| 2:22 | baptism the one baptized is buried with |
| 2:25 | Christ and raised up to a new life in |
| 2:28 | him that is the old nature is killed and |
| 2:31 | this one is Born Again In Christ Romans |
| 2:34 | chapter 6 verse 4. |
| 2:36 | the baptism is circumcised with a |
| 2:39 | circumcision not made with hands their |
| 2:42 | sin nature is cut away |
| 2:44 | so that sin death and the devil no |
| 2:46 | longer have dominion and power over them |
| 2:49 | so says Colossians 2 chapter 2 verse 11. |
| 2:55 | the baptized one is washed with a |
| 2:57 | washing of regeneration |
| 2:59 | that is this one is formed Anew Born |
| 3:02 | Again Titus 3 5. |
| 3:05 | and the baptism is saved from Eternal |
| 3:08 | punishment and eternal damnation and |
| 3:11 | given a clean conscience before God |
| 3:13 | because this baptism now saves you first |
| 3:17 | Peter 3 verse 21. |
| 3:21 | what appears to be a simple act water |
| 3:24 | poured upon the head is in fact a |
| 3:27 | sacrament of explosive and |
| 3:29 | transformative power in the name of the |
| 3:32 | father and of the son and of the Holy |
| 3:34 | Spirit the Divine name is not only what |
| 3:37 | God is called but what he is and what he |
| 3:39 | does the Divine name seems to be much |
| 3:43 | more than a noun perhaps we should think |
| 3:46 | of it as a verb the person and work of |
| 3:49 | God the Father Creator God the son |
| 3:51 | Redeemer God the spirit sanctifier going |
| 3:54 | to work |
| 3:56 | to claim cleanse justify sanctify and |
| 4:00 | glorify you the one now baptized |
| 4:04 | the baptized one receives not only a new |
| 4:07 | name but a new family the Triune God and |
| 4:10 | his one Holy Catholic and Apostolic |
| 4:12 | Church |
| 4:13 | it is not only the name that is given |
| 4:18 | but the Divine promises |
| 4:21 | presence and Power |
| 4:23 | that are received |
| 4:25 | first |
| 4:26 | the Divine promises |
| 4:28 | these are personal blessings |
| 4:31 | Jesus says |
| 4:33 | I will not leave you comfortless I |
| 4:35 | myself will come to you John 14 18 and |
| 4:40 | lo I Am With You Always even to the |
| 4:42 | close of the age Matthew 28 20. and |
| 4:47 | drinky all of it this is my blood of the |
| 4:50 | Covenant which is shed for many for the |
| 4:52 | Forgiveness of sins Matthew 26 28. |
| 4:56 | these are statements of Promise made to |
| 4:58 | you his baptized child |
| 5:01 | the one who has forgiveness of sin has |
| 5:03 | salvation and eternal life Luther |
| 5:05 | reminds us |
| 5:07 | also you receive |
| 5:11 | not only the Divine promises but divine |
| 5:13 | presence |
| 5:14 | this is God’s commitment to lifelong |
| 5:16 | companionship and faithful love for you |
| 5:18 | as Jesus says in that day you will know |
| 5:21 | that I am in the father and you are in |
| 5:23 | me and I am in you John 14 verse 20. the |
| 5:28 | care and companionship and faithful love |
| 5:30 | of God belong to you personally |
| 5:33 | and finally thirdly the divine power of |
| 5:37 | God will inspire you and enable you is |
| 5:39 | baptized one to do many miraculous |
| 5:42 | things first and of most importance to |
| 5:44 | have faith in Jesus Christ by his grace |
| 5:47 | to have Christ like love and mercy to |
| 5:49 | have christ-like service and sacrifice |
| 5:51 | to produce sweet fruits of the spirit |
| 5:54 | and the powerful gifts of the Spirit |
| 5:56 | all of these things belong to you |
| 5:59 | and to each and every person who Bears |
| 6:02 | the Divine name upon whom God has placed |
| 6:05 | his own name |
| 6:07 | Arthur just Jr in his wonderful book |
| 6:10 | Heaven on Earth the gifts of Christ in |
| 6:13 | the Divine service talks about how God |
| 6:16 | creates a new life in Christ through |
| 6:18 | holy baptism Dr just says that this Rite |
| 6:22 | of initiation marks a passage that is a |
| 6:25 | removal from one life and an entrance |
| 6:28 | into a new life the passage has three |
| 6:31 | parts says just separation from the old |
| 6:34 | life transition to the new life and |
| 6:37 | incorporation into that new life so |
| 6:41 | first separation |
| 6:43 | this begins when the gospel is |
| 6:45 | proclaimed and a person comes to Faith |
| 6:47 | by the power of the Holy Spirit |
| 6:50 | the church provides a period of |
| 6:52 | instruction or catechesis prior to |
| 6:54 | baptism which calls for separation from |
| 6:57 | sinful practices and for Conformity to |
| 7:00 | the thoughts and Life of Christ |
| 7:02 | put on the mind of Christ the heart of |
| 7:05 | Christ The Life of Christ in service and |
| 7:08 | sacrifice |
| 7:09 | you can see that separation is the work |
| 7:12 | of the Divine name that is it is the |
| 7:15 | Father’s Eternal plan to bring Salvation |
| 7:17 | it is the work of the son on the cross |
| 7:20 | and by the word of Christ that faith |
| 7:22 | comes and it is by the power of the holy |
| 7:25 | spirit that a faithful heart is created |
| 7:27 | and filled |
| 7:30 | the second part is transition this comes |
| 7:33 | at the moment of holy baptism for this |
| 7:36 | too is the work of the Divine name |
| 7:39 | Christ himself is the one who baptizes |
| 7:41 | as John the Baptist proclaimed I baptize |
| 7:44 | you with water for repentance but he who |
| 7:47 | is coming after me is mightier than I |
| 7:49 | the thong of whose sandals I’m not |
| 7:51 | worthy to untie he will baptize you with |
| 7:54 | the Holy Spirit and Fire |
| 7:56 | Matthew chapter 3 verse 11. |
| 7:59 | submerging you into Christ’s own death |
| 8:02 | and Resurrection also is the work of the |
| 8:05 | presence of the father and the power of |
| 8:08 | the spirit you emerge a new creation |
| 8:10 | born again |
| 8:11 | in baptism the Divine name brings you |
| 8:15 | out of the kingdom of darkness and into |
| 8:17 | the kingdom of his glorious light in |
| 8:20 | those Waters you receive the gifts of |
| 8:22 | Heaven Here and Now |
| 8:24 | and you look forward to the fullness and |
| 8:26 | completion of God’s gifts when you pass |
| 8:29 | through death into God’s Eternal and |
| 8:31 | Heavenly Glory |
| 8:33 | incidentally Dr just clarifies that the |
| 8:36 | infant experiences both separation and |
| 8:40 | transition at the moment of infant |
| 8:42 | baptism |
| 8:44 | then third Incorporation |
| 8:48 | this also is the work of the Divine name |
| 8:51 | incorporated into the family of God you |
| 8:54 | bow your knees before the father from |
| 8:57 | whom every family in heaven and on Earth |
| 9:00 | derives its name |
| 9:02 | with the power of the spirit in the |
| 9:04 | Inner Man and with Christ dwelling |
| 9:06 | richly in our hearts through faith |
| 9:08 | Ephesians 3 verses 14 to 17. |
| 9:13 | you have received the great gift of |
| 9:16 | communion with and in the Divine name |
| 9:20 | he has placed his name upon you and |
| 9:23 | within you now you are in and among the |
| 9:27 | company of all of his Saints |
| 9:30 | incorporation is experienced most |
| 9:33 | visibly in the sacrament of holy |
| 9:35 | communion when you are joined to Christ |
| 9:37 | receiving into your body the true body |
| 9:40 | and blood of Jesus |
| 9:42 | at his altar table you are joined with |
| 9:45 | Angels and Archangels and all the |
| 9:47 | company of Heaven including all of the |
| 9:49 | faithful around the world and all of the |
| 9:51 | Saints who have already gone to be with |
| 9:53 | him in glory |
| 9:55 | you and the entire family of God are |
| 9:59 | joined to the Divine name gathered at |
| 10:01 | the holy table receiving the holy and |
| 10:04 | Heavenly food |
| 10:06 | the Divine name |
| 10:08 | of the father and the Son and the Holy |
| 10:10 | Spirit has been placed upon you and |
| 10:13 | within you over and over and over again |
| 10:17 | in your life |
| 10:19 | in order |
| 10:20 | that God may make you his own |
| 10:24 | and give to you his promises his |
| 10:27 | presence and his power |
| 10:29 | for he is at work in you that he may |
| 10:32 | bring you by his grace Faithfully |
| 10:35 | through this life into the glory of the |
| 10:39 | life to come |
| 10:41 | amen |
| 10:47 | [Music] |
| 10:58 | [Applause] |
