0:15hello
0:16today
0:17let’s talk about the kindness of the
0:20king
0:21we begin with a story from the book of
0:24second Samuel the ninth chapter
0:28then David said
0:30is there yet anyone left of the House of
0:34Saul that I may show him kindness for
0:36Jonathan’s sake
0:38now there was a servant of the House of
0:40Saul whose name was siba and they called
0:43him to David and the King said to him
0:44are you siba and he said I am your
0:47servant and the King said is there not
0:50yet anyone of the House of Saul to whom
0:53I may show the kindness of God
0:56and siba said to the king there is still
0:58a son of Jonathan who is crippled in
1:01both feet
1:03so the king said to him where is he and
1:05siba said to the king behold he is in
1:08the house of Mahir the son of Amiel in
1:11lodebar
1:13then King David sent and brought him
1:16from the house of Mahir the son of Amiel
1:18from Lo de Bar
1:21and mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the
1:25son of Saul came to David and fell on
1:28his face and prostrated himself and
1:31David said mephibosheth
1:34and he said here is your servant
1:38David said to him do not fear for I will
1:41surely show you kindness for the sake of
1:43your father Jonathan and I will restore
1:46to you all the land of your grandfather
1:48Saul and you shall eat at my table
1:51regularly
1:54again he prostrated himself and said
1:57what is your servant that you should
1:59regard a dead dog like me
2:02then the king called Saul’s servant siba
2:05and said to him all that belonged to
2:07Saul and to all his house I have given
2:09to your Master’s grandson
2:12and you and your sons and your servants
2:14shall cultivate the land for him and you
2:17shall bring in the produce so that your
2:19Master’s grandson may have food
2:22nevertheless
2:23mephibosheth your Master’s grandson
2:26shall eat at my table regularly
2:28now siba had 15 sons and 20 servants
2:32then siba said to the king according to
2:35all that my Lord the king commands his
2:37servant so your servant will do
2:41so mephibosheth ate at David’s table as
2:45one of the king’s Sons
2:48had a young son whose name was Mika
2:52and all who lived in the house of siba
2:54were servants to mephibosheth so
2:57mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem for he
3:01ate at the king’s table regularly now he
3:04was lame in both feet
3:09please keep in mind this story about the
3:12disabled man who received undeserved
3:15Grace from the King
3:18point one
3:20a shocking gift
3:22the text before us today
3:25is a conversation that Jesus had with
3:27his disciples immediately after Peter’s
3:31confession at caesarea Philippi
3:33you remember Jesus asked who do people
3:36say that I am and he asked but who do
3:38you say that I am Peter answered you are
3:41the Christ the son of the Living God
3:45what comes after that is a series of
3:48shocking statements by Jesus today let’s
3:51review them
3:52first Jesus said that he had to go to
3:55Jerusalem and suffer many things from
3:57the elders and the chief priests and the
4:00scribes and be killed
4:02and be raised up on the third day
4:05this was the first time that Jesus ever
4:07made such a pronouncement truly this was
4:10Unthinkable to the disciples they
4:12believed that Jesus was the Christ the
4:15son of the Living God he was their
4:17long-awaited Messiah he was God’s son so
4:20why on Earth would the heavenly father
4:22allow his son to be put to death
4:25that made no sense to the disciples God
4:27is great God is all-powerful there is
4:30nothing that he cannot do and nothing
4:31that he does not know
4:33so why allow his son to die
4:37why not allow Jesus to Reign to rule he
4:41would Rule justly and wonderfully why
4:44not allow Jesus to be king and said all
4:46things are right
4:48establish peace on Earth provide health
4:51and happiness for everyone
4:54and the thought of Jesus being crucified
4:57no this was unthinkable
4:59the disciples had seen men crucified
5:03so Peter expressed his concern and
5:05compassion God forbid it Lord this shall
5:08never happen to you
5:10this kindness was well intended
5:13but do you remember the Lord’s reaction
5:14it was even more shocking than the
5:17prophecy of his death
5:19in Greek we read Jesus responding
5:25be gone Satan
5:27these were the same words that Jesus
5:29spoke at the end of the Temptation by
5:31Satan in Matthew chapter 4. here Jesus
5:34has a couple more words be gone behind
5:36me Satan in other words get out of my
5:39sight
5:40Jesus says you are a stumbling block to
5:42me the word stumbling block is scandalon
5:45in Greek a crooked stick that is used as
5:49a trigger for a trap Peter’s
5:51well-intentioned compassion was a trap
5:53for Jesus it was like the other
5:55temptations that Satan had proposed
5:58they offered a comfortable way so that
6:01Jesus would not have to face suffering
6:03and sacrifice
6:05this was the way of man but it was not
6:07the way of God God Must Die to defeat
6:12death because he is the only one who can
6:14defeat death God must be sacrificed to
6:18take our sins and Punishment because he
6:21is the only righteous offering who can
6:24take all our sins and all our punishment
6:27God both requires the righteous offering
6:30and is himself the perfect sacrifice
6:34in short that is what God requires of
6:38himself
6:39anyone who tries to stop him from doing
6:41that
6:42is opposing the will of God and
6:45attempting to Rob God by trying to
6:48prevent him from being the God who saves
6:50but Jesus is the god who saves Jesus
6:53will be sacrificed God will give the
6:56shocking gift to the undeserving one
6:59with disabled feet
7:02point to a shocking cross
7:07all of this was very distressing to
7:08Peter and the disciples but Jesus was
7:10not finished shocking them there was
7:12more that they needed to hear for the
7:14moment Jesus stopped talking about his
7:16cross and began to talk to them about
7:18their own crosses
7:20Matthew chapter 16 verses 24 and 25.
7:25then Jesus said to his disciples if
7:28anyone wishes to come after me let him
7:30deny himself and take up his cross and
7:34follow me
7:35for whoever wishes to save his life
7:37shall lose it but whoever loses his life
7:40for my sake shall find it
7:43The Humble Obedience of Jesus was one
7:47thing
7:48self-sacrifice and suffering by the Son
7:50of God that was one thing
7:52but asking his followers to join him in
7:55the process that was something else
7:56Jesus was saying that those who follow
7:59him
8:01must also pursue a life of obedience and
8:05self-sacrifice and suffering
8:07if Peter did not like the idea of
8:09suffering and sacrifice for Jesus he
8:11surely would not like the idea of
8:13suffering and sacrifice for himself
8:16you see Peter thinks the way that all of
8:19us think
8:21why doesn’t God just make things easy
8:24for Jesus
8:26and by the way why doesn’t
8:28God the heavenly father make things easy
8:30for Peter and for you and for me
8:34why can’t Our Lives be easy
8:37Why Can’t We Be
8:39put in positions of comfort and Power
8:42we would rule justly we would do what is
8:45right wouldn’t we
8:47but the Lord Jesus Christ was talking
8:49about a completely different way of
8:51thinking and living it was the opposite
8:54of what we want
8:57Jesus calls his followers to stop
8:59following the way of man
9:01and instead to follow the way of God
9:05walk in faith trust God be willing to
9:09sacrifice and suffer for his kingdom and
9:12for the needs of others receive your own
9:15cross from God
9:17what does that mean
9:19relinquish your lordship over your own
9:22life lose your life by loving Christ and
9:25serving him and others you see the cross
9:28of death is not for Jesus only it was
9:31for all of his disciples too and that
9:34shocking cross given to Peter and to you
9:37and to me that was another surprise
9:410.3 a shocking judgment the Lord Jesus
9:44had given his disciples a lot to think
9:46about frankly it was overwhelming
9:48Christ’s cross and suffering and
9:50sacrifice our own cross and suffering
9:52and sacrifice too but there was still
9:55another shock
9:57more shock to come
9:59Matthew chapter 16 verse 27 Jesus says
10:03for the son of man is going to come in
10:06the glory of his father with his angels
10:08and will then recompense every man
10:11according to his deeds
10:13Jesus is the holy and righteous judge
10:16who will come again to judge the living
10:18and the dead
10:19Jesus Will recompense every one of us
10:22according to our Deeds
10:26have you ever heard of Santa Claus
10:27theology you know he sees you when
10:29you’re sleeping he knows when you’re
10:31awake he knows if you’ve been bad or
10:32good so be good for goodness sake
10:34In this passage Jesus appears to be
10:37Santa Claus on steroids
10:39Jesus does see and know everything every
10:43evil vengeful Wicked selfish sinful
10:46thought word and deed of every moment of
10:49your life
10:50the shock Jesus has just spoken is to
10:53enormous to comprehend and too horrible
10:55to believe
10:56he will recompense you
10:59Christ Jesus will pay you back for each
11:02and every one of those sins the Great
11:05and the small the memorable ones and the
11:07ones who are desperate to forget yes
11:10there will be absolute and eternal
11:13Justice a holy recompense according to
11:16your Deeds now beloved
11:20that’s not just shocking that is
11:22terrifying
11:25conclusion a shocking King
11:29the final shock to be delivered and yes
11:31there is one more
11:33is the reality of the cross of Jesus
11:36Christ as it applies to you you see
11:39you are mephibosheth
11:42I suspect you figured that out already
11:45you are the dead dog with two broken
11:48feet the disabled one who does not
11:50deserve a place at the king’s table you
11:53have not merited extraordinary
11:55generosity and mercy but it has been
11:58lavished upon you it has been given to
12:01you all the same
12:03the king wished to demonstrate the
12:05kindness of God that is what happened to
12:08you King Jesus demonstrated the kindness
12:12of God to you
12:15but unlike mephibosheth you are not his
12:18passive and inoffensive as the lame man
12:21you were sinfully selfish toward God you
12:25were rebellious and purposefully you
12:28broke his Commandments you chose to sin
12:31and even now though you are Redeemed by
12:34his blood you still choose to nurture
12:37Unholy thoughts and to consider and
12:41enact Unholy Deeds
12:45the son of man is going to come in the
12:47glory of his father with his angels said
12:50Jesus he will recompense every man
12:53according to his deeds Jesus Will
12:56recompense you he will pay you according
13:00to your Deeds
13:01what will you be paid
13:06God has ascribed to you Deeds that were
13:11not your own
13:13God will pay you according to the
13:15righteousness that belongs to your lord
13:17Jesus Christ the recompense of Jesus the
13:21payment due to Jesus has been given to
13:24you how
13:27his obedience suffering and sacrifice
13:29were imputed to you by grace through
13:33faith the righteousness Holiness and
13:36eternal life of Jesus belong to you now
13:40Jesus Lives within you you have the
13:43heart of Christ the forgiveness and
13:44mercy of Christ
13:46they are his undeserved gifts to you now
13:50mephibosheth
13:52you have received the king’s shocking
13:54Grace
13:55God’s recompense to you is only blessing
13:59in the name of Jesus
14:01so now like David you can give shocking
14:04and undeserved blessings too this is not
14:07in order to get a seat at the table of
14:09the king but because Jesus has already
14:11made you his own and your seat at the
14:14king’s table is already set
14:17as you are seated you may ask what is
14:21your servant that you should be
14:23concerned about a dead dog like me
14:26and then those seated with you at the
14:29table will smile and point to the head
14:31of the table Jesus and say
14:35this is the kindness
14:38of your king
14:42amen
