| 0:15 | hello |
| 0:16 | today |
| 0:17 | let’s talk about the kindness of the |
| 0:20 | king |
| 0:21 | we begin with a story from the book of |
| 0:24 | second Samuel the ninth chapter |
| 0:28 | then David said |
| 0:30 | is there yet anyone left of the House of |
| 0:34 | Saul that I may show him kindness for |
| 0:36 | Jonathan’s sake |
| 0:38 | now there was a servant of the House of |
| 0:40 | Saul whose name was siba and they called |
| 0:43 | him to David and the King said to him |
| 0:44 | are you siba and he said I am your |
| 0:47 | servant and the King said is there not |
| 0:50 | yet anyone of the House of Saul to whom |
| 0:53 | I may show the kindness of God |
| 0:56 | and siba said to the king there is still |
| 0:58 | a son of Jonathan who is crippled in |
| 1:01 | both feet |
| 1:03 | so the king said to him where is he and |
| 1:05 | siba said to the king behold he is in |
| 1:08 | the house of Mahir the son of Amiel in |
| 1:11 | lodebar |
| 1:13 | then King David sent and brought him |
| 1:16 | from the house of Mahir the son of Amiel |
| 1:18 | from Lo de Bar |
| 1:21 | and mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the |
| 1:25 | son of Saul came to David and fell on |
| 1:28 | his face and prostrated himself and |
| 1:31 | David said mephibosheth |
| 1:34 | and he said here is your servant |
| 1:38 | David said to him do not fear for I will |
| 1:41 | surely show you kindness for the sake of |
| 1:43 | your father Jonathan and I will restore |
| 1:46 | to you all the land of your grandfather |
| 1:48 | Saul and you shall eat at my table |
| 1:51 | regularly |
| 1:54 | again he prostrated himself and said |
| 1:57 | what is your servant that you should |
| 1:59 | regard a dead dog like me |
| 2:02 | then the king called Saul’s servant siba |
| 2:05 | and said to him all that belonged to |
| 2:07 | Saul and to all his house I have given |
| 2:09 | to your Master’s grandson |
| 2:12 | and you and your sons and your servants |
| 2:14 | shall cultivate the land for him and you |
| 2:17 | shall bring in the produce so that your |
| 2:19 | Master’s grandson may have food |
| 2:22 | nevertheless |
| 2:23 | mephibosheth your Master’s grandson |
| 2:26 | shall eat at my table regularly |
| 2:28 | now siba had 15 sons and 20 servants |
| 2:32 | then siba said to the king according to |
| 2:35 | all that my Lord the king commands his |
| 2:37 | servant so your servant will do |
| 2:41 | so mephibosheth ate at David’s table as |
| 2:45 | one of the king’s Sons |
| 2:48 | had a young son whose name was Mika |
| 2:52 | and all who lived in the house of siba |
| 2:54 | were servants to mephibosheth so |
| 2:57 | mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem for he |
| 3:01 | ate at the king’s table regularly now he |
| 3:04 | was lame in both feet |
| 3:09 | please keep in mind this story about the |
| 3:12 | disabled man who received undeserved |
| 3:15 | Grace from the King |
| 3:18 | point one |
| 3:20 | a shocking gift |
| 3:22 | the text before us today |
| 3:25 | is a conversation that Jesus had with |
| 3:27 | his disciples immediately after Peter’s |
| 3:31 | confession at caesarea Philippi |
| 3:33 | you remember Jesus asked who do people |
| 3:36 | say that I am and he asked but who do |
| 3:38 | you say that I am Peter answered you are |
| 3:41 | the Christ the son of the Living God |
| 3:45 | what comes after that is a series of |
| 3:48 | shocking statements by Jesus today let’s |
| 3:51 | review them |
| 3:52 | first Jesus said that he had to go to |
| 3:55 | Jerusalem and suffer many things from |
| 3:57 | the elders and the chief priests and the |
| 4:00 | scribes and be killed |
| 4:02 | and be raised up on the third day |
| 4:05 | this was the first time that Jesus ever |
| 4:07 | made such a pronouncement truly this was |
| 4:10 | Unthinkable to the disciples they |
| 4:12 | believed that Jesus was the Christ the |
| 4:15 | son of the Living God he was their |
| 4:17 | long-awaited Messiah he was God’s son so |
| 4:20 | why on Earth would the heavenly father |
| 4:22 | allow his son to be put to death |
| 4:25 | that made no sense to the disciples God |
| 4:27 | is great God is all-powerful there is |
| 4:30 | nothing that he cannot do and nothing |
| 4:31 | that he does not know |
| 4:33 | so why allow his son to die |
| 4:37 | why not allow Jesus to Reign to rule he |
| 4:41 | would Rule justly and wonderfully why |
| 4:44 | not allow Jesus to be king and said all |
| 4:46 | things are right |
| 4:48 | establish peace on Earth provide health |
| 4:51 | and happiness for everyone |
| 4:54 | and the thought of Jesus being crucified |
| 4:57 | no this was unthinkable |
| 4:59 | the disciples had seen men crucified |
| 5:03 | so Peter expressed his concern and |
| 5:05 | compassion God forbid it Lord this shall |
| 5:08 | never happen to you |
| 5:10 | this kindness was well intended |
| 5:13 | but do you remember the Lord’s reaction |
| 5:14 | it was even more shocking than the |
| 5:17 | prophecy of his death |
| 5:19 | in Greek we read Jesus responding |
| 5:25 | be gone Satan |
| 5:27 | these were the same words that Jesus |
| 5:29 | spoke at the end of the Temptation by |
| 5:31 | Satan in Matthew chapter 4. here Jesus |
| 5:34 | has a couple more words be gone behind |
| 5:36 | me Satan in other words get out of my |
| 5:39 | sight |
| 5:40 | Jesus says you are a stumbling block to |
| 5:42 | me the word stumbling block is scandalon |
| 5:45 | in Greek a crooked stick that is used as |
| 5:49 | a trigger for a trap Peter’s |
| 5:51 | well-intentioned compassion was a trap |
| 5:53 | for Jesus it was like the other |
| 5:55 | temptations that Satan had proposed |
| 5:58 | they offered a comfortable way so that |
| 6:01 | Jesus would not have to face suffering |
| 6:03 | and sacrifice |
| 6:05 | this was the way of man but it was not |
| 6:07 | the way of God God Must Die to defeat |
| 6:12 | death because he is the only one who can |
| 6:14 | defeat death God must be sacrificed to |
| 6:18 | take our sins and Punishment because he |
| 6:21 | is the only righteous offering who can |
| 6:24 | take all our sins and all our punishment |
| 6:27 | God both requires the righteous offering |
| 6:30 | and is himself the perfect sacrifice |
| 6:34 | in short that is what God requires of |
| 6:38 | himself |
| 6:39 | anyone who tries to stop him from doing |
| 6:41 | that |
| 6:42 | is opposing the will of God and |
| 6:45 | attempting to Rob God by trying to |
| 6:48 | prevent him from being the God who saves |
| 6:50 | but Jesus is the god who saves Jesus |
| 6:53 | will be sacrificed God will give the |
| 6:56 | shocking gift to the undeserving one |
| 6:59 | with disabled feet |
| 7:02 | point to a shocking cross |
| 7:07 | all of this was very distressing to |
| 7:08 | Peter and the disciples but Jesus was |
| 7:10 | not finished shocking them there was |
| 7:12 | more that they needed to hear for the |
| 7:14 | moment Jesus stopped talking about his |
| 7:16 | cross and began to talk to them about |
| 7:18 | their own crosses |
| 7:20 | Matthew chapter 16 verses 24 and 25. |
| 7:25 | then Jesus said to his disciples if |
| 7:28 | anyone wishes to come after me let him |
| 7:30 | deny himself and take up his cross and |
| 7:34 | follow me |
| 7:35 | for whoever wishes to save his life |
| 7:37 | shall lose it but whoever loses his life |
| 7:40 | for my sake shall find it |
| 7:43 | The Humble Obedience of Jesus was one |
| 7:47 | thing |
| 7:48 | self-sacrifice and suffering by the Son |
| 7:50 | of God that was one thing |
| 7:52 | but asking his followers to join him in |
| 7:55 | the process that was something else |
| 7:56 | Jesus was saying that those who follow |
| 7:59 | him |
| 8:01 | must also pursue a life of obedience and |
| 8:05 | self-sacrifice and suffering |
| 8:07 | if Peter did not like the idea of |
| 8:09 | suffering and sacrifice for Jesus he |
| 8:11 | surely would not like the idea of |
| 8:13 | suffering and sacrifice for himself |
| 8:16 | you see Peter thinks the way that all of |
| 8:19 | us think |
| 8:21 | why doesn’t God just make things easy |
| 8:24 | for Jesus |
| 8:26 | and by the way why doesn’t |
| 8:28 | God the heavenly father make things easy |
| 8:30 | for Peter and for you and for me |
| 8:34 | why can’t Our Lives be easy |
| 8:37 | Why Can’t We Be |
| 8:39 | put in positions of comfort and Power |
| 8:42 | we would rule justly we would do what is |
| 8:45 | right wouldn’t we |
| 8:47 | but the Lord Jesus Christ was talking |
| 8:49 | about a completely different way of |
| 8:51 | thinking and living it was the opposite |
| 8:54 | of what we want |
| 8:57 | Jesus calls his followers to stop |
| 8:59 | following the way of man |
| 9:01 | and instead to follow the way of God |
| 9:05 | walk in faith trust God be willing to |
| 9:09 | sacrifice and suffer for his kingdom and |
| 9:12 | for the needs of others receive your own |
| 9:15 | cross from God |
| 9:17 | what does that mean |
| 9:19 | relinquish your lordship over your own |
| 9:22 | life lose your life by loving Christ and |
| 9:25 | serving him and others you see the cross |
| 9:28 | of death is not for Jesus only it was |
| 9:31 | for all of his disciples too and that |
| 9:34 | shocking cross given to Peter and to you |
| 9:37 | and to me that was another surprise |
| 9:41 | 0.3 a shocking judgment the Lord Jesus |
| 9:44 | had given his disciples a lot to think |
| 9:46 | about frankly it was overwhelming |
| 9:48 | Christ’s cross and suffering and |
| 9:50 | sacrifice our own cross and suffering |
| 9:52 | and sacrifice too but there was still |
| 9:55 | another shock |
| 9:57 | more shock to come |
| 9:59 | Matthew chapter 16 verse 27 Jesus says |
| 10:03 | for the son of man is going to come in |
| 10:06 | the glory of his father with his angels |
| 10:08 | and will then recompense every man |
| 10:11 | according to his deeds |
| 10:13 | Jesus is the holy and righteous judge |
| 10:16 | who will come again to judge the living |
| 10:18 | and the dead |
| 10:19 | Jesus Will recompense every one of us |
| 10:22 | according to our Deeds |
| 10:26 | have you ever heard of Santa Claus |
| 10:27 | theology you know he sees you when |
| 10:29 | you’re sleeping he knows when you’re |
| 10:31 | awake he knows if you’ve been bad or |
| 10:32 | good so be good for goodness sake |
| 10:34 | In this passage Jesus appears to be |
| 10:37 | Santa Claus on steroids |
| 10:39 | Jesus does see and know everything every |
| 10:43 | evil vengeful Wicked selfish sinful |
| 10:46 | thought word and deed of every moment of |
| 10:49 | your life |
| 10:50 | the shock Jesus has just spoken is to |
| 10:53 | enormous to comprehend and too horrible |
| 10:55 | to believe |
| 10:56 | he will recompense you |
| 10:59 | Christ Jesus will pay you back for each |
| 11:02 | and every one of those sins the Great |
| 11:05 | and the small the memorable ones and the |
| 11:07 | ones who are desperate to forget yes |
| 11:10 | there will be absolute and eternal |
| 11:13 | Justice a holy recompense according to |
| 11:16 | your Deeds now beloved |
| 11:20 | that’s not just shocking that is |
| 11:22 | terrifying |
| 11:25 | conclusion a shocking King |
| 11:29 | the final shock to be delivered and yes |
| 11:31 | there is one more |
| 11:33 | is the reality of the cross of Jesus |
| 11:36 | Christ as it applies to you you see |
| 11:39 | you are mephibosheth |
| 11:42 | I suspect you figured that out already |
| 11:45 | you are the dead dog with two broken |
| 11:48 | feet the disabled one who does not |
| 11:50 | deserve a place at the king’s table you |
| 11:53 | have not merited extraordinary |
| 11:55 | generosity and mercy but it has been |
| 11:58 | lavished upon you it has been given to |
| 12:01 | you all the same |
| 12:03 | the king wished to demonstrate the |
| 12:05 | kindness of God that is what happened to |
| 12:08 | you King Jesus demonstrated the kindness |
| 12:12 | of God to you |
| 12:15 | but unlike mephibosheth you are not his |
| 12:18 | passive and inoffensive as the lame man |
| 12:21 | you were sinfully selfish toward God you |
| 12:25 | were rebellious and purposefully you |
| 12:28 | broke his Commandments you chose to sin |
| 12:31 | and even now though you are Redeemed by |
| 12:34 | his blood you still choose to nurture |
| 12:37 | Unholy thoughts and to consider and |
| 12:41 | enact Unholy Deeds |
| 12:45 | the son of man is going to come in the |
| 12:47 | glory of his father with his angels said |
| 12:50 | Jesus he will recompense every man |
| 12:53 | according to his deeds Jesus Will |
| 12:56 | recompense you he will pay you according |
| 13:00 | to your Deeds |
| 13:01 | what will you be paid |
| 13:06 | God has ascribed to you Deeds that were |
| 13:11 | not your own |
| 13:13 | God will pay you according to the |
| 13:15 | righteousness that belongs to your lord |
| 13:17 | Jesus Christ the recompense of Jesus the |
| 13:21 | payment due to Jesus has been given to |
| 13:24 | you how |
| 13:27 | his obedience suffering and sacrifice |
| 13:29 | were imputed to you by grace through |
| 13:33 | faith the righteousness Holiness and |
| 13:36 | eternal life of Jesus belong to you now |
| 13:40 | Jesus Lives within you you have the |
| 13:43 | heart of Christ the forgiveness and |
| 13:44 | mercy of Christ |
| 13:46 | they are his undeserved gifts to you now |
| 13:50 | mephibosheth |
| 13:52 | you have received the king’s shocking |
| 13:54 | Grace |
| 13:55 | God’s recompense to you is only blessing |
| 13:59 | in the name of Jesus |
| 14:01 | so now like David you can give shocking |
| 14:04 | and undeserved blessings too this is not |
| 14:07 | in order to get a seat at the table of |
| 14:09 | the king but because Jesus has already |
| 14:11 | made you his own and your seat at the |
| 14:14 | king’s table is already set |
| 14:17 | as you are seated you may ask what is |
| 14:21 | your servant that you should be |
| 14:23 | concerned about a dead dog like me |
| 14:26 | and then those seated with you at the |
| 14:29 | table will smile and point to the head |
| 14:31 | of the table Jesus and say |
| 14:35 | this is the kindness |
| 14:38 | of your king |
| 14:42 | amen |
| 14:50 | [Music] |
| 15:01 | [Applause] |
