0:06hello
0:07today let’s talk about the new creation
0:12you are familiar I suspect with the idea
0:15that a particular historical person or
0:18place or event in the Old Testament can
0:22be seen as a type or shadow of its
0:24fulfillment in the New Testament for
0:27example
0:28the shepherd boy and King David in the
0:32Old Testament can be seen as a type or
0:34shadow of the Good Shepherd and the
0:36Heavenly King of Kings Jesus Christ in
0:39the New Testament
0:40or for example
0:43the Waters of the flood at the time of
0:46Noah can be seen as a type of shadow of
0:48the Waters of holy baptism in the New
0:50Testament or the Passover meal of the
0:54Old Testament can be seen as a type or
0:56shadow of the Lord’s Supper in the New
0:58Testament you get the idea so today
1:00we’re going to talk about God’s work of
1:04Creation in the Old Testament as a type
1:07or shadow of Christ’s work
1:10of New Creation in the New Testament
1:16in the beginning
1:18Genesis 1
1:21the Earth was without
1:23form and was void
1:26Darkness was over the face of the deep
1:27and God said let there be light and
1:30there was light
1:33and God separated the darkness from the
1:35light and there was evening and there
1:37was mourning the first day
1:39the sequence is odd for us but it’s
1:41memorable worth noting there was evening
1:44there was morning the first day
1:47God created and continued to create in
1:50subsequent days until on the sixth day
1:53God created Humanity in his own image in
1:57the image of God he created them male
1:59and female created he them
2:02and there was evening and there was
2:04mourning the sixth day then on the
2:07seventh day God rested
2:10from all of his labors it was a Sabbath
2:13rest
2:14have you ever thought
2:16of God’s work of Creation in the Old
2:18Testament as a type or a shadow of God’s
2:22work
2:23of new creation of redemption
2:27in the New Testament
2:29let’s see what happens when the word of
2:31God
2:31that spoke all creation into being when
2:34that word becomes flesh and dwells Among
2:36Us full of grace and truth and we have
2:38beheld his glory glory as of the only
2:40son of the father
2:42when the one who said let there be light
2:45becomes the light of the world
2:48and we see him
2:50and know him
2:51let’s start with Monday Thursday of Holy
2:55Week
2:57when Jesus sends Peter and John ahead of
2:59him to make ready the meal of the
3:02Passover
3:03as evening Falls this is the beginning
3:06of the day of preparation
3:09we would call this Thursday evening but
3:11to the Jew
3:12it is the beginning of Friday the day of
3:15preparation
3:16Jesus celebrates the last supper with
3:19his disciples he teaches them the truth
3:22of his Divine body and blood in the
3:25Earthly elements of bread and wine by
3:27virtue of the word of God the word of
3:30Christ
3:31making that reality
3:34he teaches
3:37extensively
3:38in the supper
3:40but when the supper has ended they leave
3:42for the upper room in the Garden of
3:44Gethsemane
3:45there Jesus prays that the cup of all of
3:48Humanity’s sin may pass from him
3:51and that the penalty of all of God’s
3:53Wrath may not be laid upon him
3:56but he prays also
3:58not his will but the fathers will be
4:00done
4:02Judas comes
4:04and betrays the Lord
4:06the guard of the Sanhedrin take him
4:10seize him for interrogation Peter
4:13follows and denies him
4:15the Lord is mocked and beaten bludgeoned
4:19with a stick spat upon
4:21this goes on for hours
4:24until dawn is breaking and he’s taken
4:27before Pilate pilate finds no guilt no
4:31fault in this man
4:34he sends him to Herod who’s displeased
4:37because he wants to see a miracle
4:39pardon me
4:42Jesus is sent back to Pilate
4:44who’s trying to find a way to release
4:46him
4:47he determines that he will have Jesus
4:49scourged the Roman flagellum is a
4:53torture instrument it is a whip
4:56with
4:57many long strips of leather studded at
5:02intervals with metal or bone
5:06it is
5:08it is created to tear
5:11flesh
5:12to tear chunks of Flesh off the back
5:15side’s abdomen legs of the victim
5:20the flagellum may result in death
5:26is designed
5:29to inflict pain
5:32it may kill or it may almost kill
5:36when Jesus has finished his lashes he’s
5:38taken back to pilate who displays him to
5:40the crowd and says isn’t this enough I
5:42can release one man they cry give us
5:45Barabbas crucify him
5:47pilate washes his hands of this
5:50and gives the nod for crucifixion Jesus
5:52is made to carry his cross
5:54until he can carry it no longer
5:56he’s taken to Golgotha there he is
5:58crucified it’s only nine o’clock in the
6:00morning
6:03Jesus is completing his work
6:07of New Creation
6:09he has taken upon himself the sins of
6:12the world
6:14he is receiving the punishment for all
6:16Humanity
6:18he is writhing in agony both spiritually
6:22and physically
6:25he is pressing himself up
6:28on the cross
6:30pressing his
6:31his feet
6:33with the nail through his feet pulling
6:35with his hands with the nails through
6:37his hands pulling himself up to grasp
6:40and gasp a breath
6:43and then as his energy and life ebb
6:48he falls down again but realizes quickly
6:51that he needs breath and Rises up and so
6:55he rides the cross up and down for hours
6:58until three o’clock in the afternoon
7:05Jesus commends his Spirit to his father
7:09the work of atonement
7:12is finished
7:14the Son of God the son of man
7:17is dead
7:20Joseph of Arimathea asks for the body of
7:23Christ
7:24he and Nicodemus take the body down
7:27and begin the preparation
7:31that must take
7:32two or three hours
7:35at a minimum but they will rush because
7:37they must have him in the Tomb
7:39before the end of the day of preparation
7:41the beginning of the day of Sabbath
7:43what do they do to prepare the body
7:45they must wash the body completely
7:48they must anoint the body
7:51with oil
7:54they will begin to wrap the body with
7:57fine linen the arms will be wrapped very
8:00Loosely and in each fold of the linen
8:02there will be placed nard and aloes
8:05frankincense and myrrh
8:08copious amounts in all of the folds both
8:11arms both legs
8:13and then
8:15a napkin will be rolled
8:18placed under the chin and tied at the
8:20head
8:21his face must be covered because he’s
8:23been beaten and bludgeoned and it’s
8:25disfigured a disfigured face must be
8:27covered
8:30his hands are tied his feet are tied and
8:34he’s laid on a shroud
8:36othonia is the name of the Shroud his
8:40feet are placed at one end his head
8:42toward the middle it’s about three and a
8:44half feet wide 14 feet long
8:47then the rest of the Shroud is brought
8:49over the head passes over the Torso back
8:51down to the feet it too is filled with
8:54copious amounts of of spices and
8:58ointments
9:01there are um
9:03bandages brought around the Shroud and
9:05tied at intervals what make a burial
9:09Cocoon of sorts for the body of Christ
9:13he’s then hastily carried into a tomb
9:16into which no one has ever been placed
9:20the tomb is sealed
9:25all things have taken place before the
9:28Sabbath begins
9:30now it is Friday night to us
9:33but for the Jew
9:34Sabbath
9:36has just begun
9:38after the completion
9:40of his creation
9:44the creation work that God did
9:46he rested on the seventh day
9:49after the completion of the new creation
9:53work that the Lord Jesus did
9:56he rested in the Tomb
10:04during the Sabbath day
10:07the disciples hid for Terror in the
10:09upper room the doors and windows being
10:11locked
10:12the the women waited in order to anoint
10:16the corpse
10:17when the Sabbath was completed
10:20the sanhedrined and sent soldiers to
10:22guard the tomb
10:24and the Bible says that all creation
10:26waited as a woman in childbirth to be
10:29set free from the slavery of corruption
10:32and delivered into the freedom of the
10:36glory of the children of God
10:41finally
10:43Shabbat the Sabbath was ended
10:47what would be to us Saturday night
10:49is to the Jew the first day of the week
10:53or as Jesus called it on the third day
10:57he will rise again
10:59Jesus visits the souls in prison from
11:02the time of Noah
11:05the Earth turns
11:07and the new day
11:09is Dawning
11:11here’s how John puts it in his gospel
11:14the 20th chapter beginning with the
11:16first verse
11:17now on the first day of the week Mary
11:20Magdalene came early to the tomb while
11:24it was still dark and saw the stone
11:25already taken away from the tomb and so
11:28she ran and came to Simon Peter and to
11:30the other disciple whom Jesus loved
11:33she came while it was still dark
11:36but Darkness
11:37is turning into light and all the world
11:40is beginning a new creation humanity is
11:44reconciled to God and the great foes of
11:47humanity sin death and the devil have
11:50been vanquished
11:52for all of those who believe in Jesus
11:55Christ
11:56these enemies have become toothless
11:59tigers
12:00they can only Roar but they have no
12:03power to destroy
12:06Jesus is Alive
12:10he has passed through the walls of the
12:12Tomb
12:13he is no longer wearing his grave
12:15wrappings
12:16he’s wearing a robe of Resurrection
12:19he the new Adam is the firstborn from
12:22the dead
12:25Mary delivers her message to Peter and
12:27John who run to the tomb we’re told that
12:30they see the linen wrappings quote lying
12:33there end quote
12:35that is one word in English there’s two
12:38words lying there but in Greek it’s
12:39simply the word keimana
12:42lying there
12:44it’s spoken of an infant who would be
12:47wrapped and placed in a crib and we
12:49would say ah
12:51the baby’s lying there
12:53or it could be spoken even of a village
12:55that is nicely situated in a meadow we
12:59would say it’s just lying there
13:01now at this point we’re told
13:04that the wrappings from the body of
13:06Jesus were lying there
13:09one would have had to have cut the
13:11cocoon-like wrappings or disheveled
13:13their folds terribly to get the body of
13:15Jesus out
13:18but the body
13:20was gone
13:22and the the wrappings were still in
13:26their folds they were still in the right
13:28place
13:30they were just lying there
13:34it was a clear testimony they were a
13:36witness to the resurrection of Jesus
13:40strangely enough though you remember
13:42this
13:43sudarion is what it’s called the napkin
13:45that goes under the chin and ties at the
13:48top of the head well it should have been
13:49in the midst of those folds but it’s not
13:52instead you remember the Jews require a
13:55second Witness
13:56the sudarion is the second witness for
13:59it is wrapped up in a place apart by
14:02itself
14:04making a separate testimony
14:06to the reality of the Resurrection
14:10of Jesus
14:16Jesus meets with Mary and the women he
14:19meets with Simon Peter and the disciples
14:24it is the first day of the new creation
14:27on that new day everything everywhere is
14:31changed
14:32when God first created it was a mighty
14:35work
14:37but it was only a shadow of what was to
14:39come
14:40for this new creation this Resurrection
14:42Day
14:43restored the broken Fellowship indeed
14:48restored the intimacy
14:50between God
14:52and his beloved children
14:54who had strayed so far and sinned so
14:58greatly
15:00his beloved Son the life-giving second
15:04Adam
15:05had established a new creation
15:08and in it a new relationship
15:12that by grace through faith
15:14the children are restored to the bosom
15:16of the father
15:19and there was evening
15:21and there was mourning
15:23a new day
15:25and God saw everything that he had done
15:29and God said
15:32it is good
15:35amen
