| 0:06 | hello |
| 0:07 | today let’s talk about the new creation |
| 0:12 | you are familiar I suspect with the idea |
| 0:15 | that a particular historical person or |
| 0:18 | place or event in the Old Testament can |
| 0:22 | be seen as a type or shadow of its |
| 0:24 | fulfillment in the New Testament for |
| 0:27 | example |
| 0:28 | the shepherd boy and King David in the |
| 0:32 | Old Testament can be seen as a type or |
| 0:34 | shadow of the Good Shepherd and the |
| 0:36 | Heavenly King of Kings Jesus Christ in |
| 0:39 | the New Testament |
| 0:40 | or for example |
| 0:43 | the Waters of the flood at the time of |
| 0:46 | Noah can be seen as a type of shadow of |
| 0:48 | the Waters of holy baptism in the New |
| 0:50 | Testament or the Passover meal of the |
| 0:54 | Old Testament can be seen as a type or |
| 0:56 | shadow of the Lord’s Supper in the New |
| 0:58 | Testament you get the idea so today |
| 1:00 | we’re going to talk about God’s work of |
| 1:04 | Creation in the Old Testament as a type |
| 1:07 | or shadow of Christ’s work |
| 1:10 | of New Creation in the New Testament |
| 1:16 | in the beginning |
| 1:18 | Genesis 1 |
| 1:21 | the Earth was without |
| 1:23 | form and was void |
| 1:26 | Darkness was over the face of the deep |
| 1:27 | and God said let there be light and |
| 1:30 | there was light |
| 1:33 | and God separated the darkness from the |
| 1:35 | light and there was evening and there |
| 1:37 | was mourning the first day |
| 1:39 | the sequence is odd for us but it’s |
| 1:41 | memorable worth noting there was evening |
| 1:44 | there was morning the first day |
| 1:47 | God created and continued to create in |
| 1:50 | subsequent days until on the sixth day |
| 1:53 | God created Humanity in his own image in |
| 1:57 | the image of God he created them male |
| 1:59 | and female created he them |
| 2:02 | and there was evening and there was |
| 2:04 | mourning the sixth day then on the |
| 2:07 | seventh day God rested |
| 2:10 | from all of his labors it was a Sabbath |
| 2:13 | rest |
| 2:14 | have you ever thought |
| 2:16 | of God’s work of Creation in the Old |
| 2:18 | Testament as a type or a shadow of God’s |
| 2:22 | work |
| 2:23 | of new creation of redemption |
| 2:27 | in the New Testament |
| 2:29 | let’s see what happens when the word of |
| 2:31 | God |
| 2:31 | that spoke all creation into being when |
| 2:34 | that word becomes flesh and dwells Among |
| 2:36 | Us full of grace and truth and we have |
| 2:38 | beheld his glory glory as of the only |
| 2:40 | son of the father |
| 2:42 | when the one who said let there be light |
| 2:45 | becomes the light of the world |
| 2:48 | and we see him |
| 2:50 | and know him |
| 2:51 | let’s start with Monday Thursday of Holy |
| 2:55 | Week |
| 2:57 | when Jesus sends Peter and John ahead of |
| 2:59 | him to make ready the meal of the |
| 3:02 | Passover |
| 3:03 | as evening Falls this is the beginning |
| 3:06 | of the day of preparation |
| 3:09 | we would call this Thursday evening but |
| 3:11 | to the Jew |
| 3:12 | it is the beginning of Friday the day of |
| 3:15 | preparation |
| 3:16 | Jesus celebrates the last supper with |
| 3:19 | his disciples he teaches them the truth |
| 3:22 | of his Divine body and blood in the |
| 3:25 | Earthly elements of bread and wine by |
| 3:27 | virtue of the word of God the word of |
| 3:30 | Christ |
| 3:31 | making that reality |
| 3:34 | he teaches |
| 3:37 | extensively |
| 3:38 | in the supper |
| 3:40 | but when the supper has ended they leave |
| 3:42 | for the upper room in the Garden of |
| 3:44 | Gethsemane |
| 3:45 | there Jesus prays that the cup of all of |
| 3:48 | Humanity’s sin may pass from him |
| 3:51 | and that the penalty of all of God’s |
| 3:53 | Wrath may not be laid upon him |
| 3:56 | but he prays also |
| 3:58 | not his will but the fathers will be |
| 4:00 | done |
| 4:02 | Judas comes |
| 4:04 | and betrays the Lord |
| 4:06 | the guard of the Sanhedrin take him |
| 4:10 | seize him for interrogation Peter |
| 4:13 | follows and denies him |
| 4:15 | the Lord is mocked and beaten bludgeoned |
| 4:19 | with a stick spat upon |
| 4:21 | this goes on for hours |
| 4:24 | until dawn is breaking and he’s taken |
| 4:27 | before Pilate pilate finds no guilt no |
| 4:31 | fault in this man |
| 4:34 | he sends him to Herod who’s displeased |
| 4:37 | because he wants to see a miracle |
| 4:39 | pardon me |
| 4:42 | Jesus is sent back to Pilate |
| 4:44 | who’s trying to find a way to release |
| 4:46 | him |
| 4:47 | he determines that he will have Jesus |
| 4:49 | scourged the Roman flagellum is a |
| 4:53 | torture instrument it is a whip |
| 4:56 | with |
| 4:57 | many long strips of leather studded at |
| 5:02 | intervals with metal or bone |
| 5:06 | it is |
| 5:08 | it is created to tear |
| 5:11 | flesh |
| 5:12 | to tear chunks of Flesh off the back |
| 5:15 | side’s abdomen legs of the victim |
| 5:20 | the flagellum may result in death |
| 5:26 | is designed |
| 5:29 | to inflict pain |
| 5:32 | it may kill or it may almost kill |
| 5:36 | when Jesus has finished his lashes he’s |
| 5:38 | taken back to pilate who displays him to |
| 5:40 | the crowd and says isn’t this enough I |
| 5:42 | can release one man they cry give us |
| 5:45 | Barabbas crucify him |
| 5:47 | pilate washes his hands of this |
| 5:50 | and gives the nod for crucifixion Jesus |
| 5:52 | is made to carry his cross |
| 5:54 | until he can carry it no longer |
| 5:56 | he’s taken to Golgotha there he is |
| 5:58 | crucified it’s only nine o’clock in the |
| 6:00 | morning |
| 6:03 | Jesus is completing his work |
| 6:07 | of New Creation |
| 6:09 | he has taken upon himself the sins of |
| 6:12 | the world |
| 6:14 | he is receiving the punishment for all |
| 6:16 | Humanity |
| 6:18 | he is writhing in agony both spiritually |
| 6:22 | and physically |
| 6:25 | he is pressing himself up |
| 6:28 | on the cross |
| 6:30 | pressing his |
| 6:31 | his feet |
| 6:33 | with the nail through his feet pulling |
| 6:35 | with his hands with the nails through |
| 6:37 | his hands pulling himself up to grasp |
| 6:40 | and gasp a breath |
| 6:43 | and then as his energy and life ebb |
| 6:48 | he falls down again but realizes quickly |
| 6:51 | that he needs breath and Rises up and so |
| 6:55 | he rides the cross up and down for hours |
| 6:58 | until three o’clock in the afternoon |
| 7:05 | Jesus commends his Spirit to his father |
| 7:09 | the work of atonement |
| 7:12 | is finished |
| 7:14 | the Son of God the son of man |
| 7:17 | is dead |
| 7:20 | Joseph of Arimathea asks for the body of |
| 7:23 | Christ |
| 7:24 | he and Nicodemus take the body down |
| 7:27 | and begin the preparation |
| 7:31 | that must take |
| 7:32 | two or three hours |
| 7:35 | at a minimum but they will rush because |
| 7:37 | they must have him in the Tomb |
| 7:39 | before the end of the day of preparation |
| 7:41 | the beginning of the day of Sabbath |
| 7:43 | what do they do to prepare the body |
| 7:45 | they must wash the body completely |
| 7:48 | they must anoint the body |
| 7:51 | with oil |
| 7:54 | they will begin to wrap the body with |
| 7:57 | fine linen the arms will be wrapped very |
| 8:00 | Loosely and in each fold of the linen |
| 8:02 | there will be placed nard and aloes |
| 8:05 | frankincense and myrrh |
| 8:08 | copious amounts in all of the folds both |
| 8:11 | arms both legs |
| 8:13 | and then |
| 8:15 | a napkin will be rolled |
| 8:18 | placed under the chin and tied at the |
| 8:20 | head |
| 8:21 | his face must be covered because he’s |
| 8:23 | been beaten and bludgeoned and it’s |
| 8:25 | disfigured a disfigured face must be |
| 8:27 | covered |
| 8:30 | his hands are tied his feet are tied and |
| 8:34 | he’s laid on a shroud |
| 8:36 | othonia is the name of the Shroud his |
| 8:40 | feet are placed at one end his head |
| 8:42 | toward the middle it’s about three and a |
| 8:44 | half feet wide 14 feet long |
| 8:47 | then the rest of the Shroud is brought |
| 8:49 | over the head passes over the Torso back |
| 8:51 | down to the feet it too is filled with |
| 8:54 | copious amounts of of spices and |
| 8:58 | ointments |
| 9:01 | there are um |
| 9:03 | bandages brought around the Shroud and |
| 9:05 | tied at intervals what make a burial |
| 9:09 | Cocoon of sorts for the body of Christ |
| 9:13 | he’s then hastily carried into a tomb |
| 9:16 | into which no one has ever been placed |
| 9:20 | the tomb is sealed |
| 9:25 | all things have taken place before the |
| 9:28 | Sabbath begins |
| 9:30 | now it is Friday night to us |
| 9:33 | but for the Jew |
| 9:34 | Sabbath |
| 9:36 | has just begun |
| 9:38 | after the completion |
| 9:40 | of his creation |
| 9:44 | the creation work that God did |
| 9:46 | he rested on the seventh day |
| 9:49 | after the completion of the new creation |
| 9:53 | work that the Lord Jesus did |
| 9:56 | he rested in the Tomb |
| 10:04 | during the Sabbath day |
| 10:07 | the disciples hid for Terror in the |
| 10:09 | upper room the doors and windows being |
| 10:11 | locked |
| 10:12 | the the women waited in order to anoint |
| 10:16 | the corpse |
| 10:17 | when the Sabbath was completed |
| 10:20 | the sanhedrined and sent soldiers to |
| 10:22 | guard the tomb |
| 10:24 | and the Bible says that all creation |
| 10:26 | waited as a woman in childbirth to be |
| 10:29 | set free from the slavery of corruption |
| 10:32 | and delivered into the freedom of the |
| 10:36 | glory of the children of God |
| 10:41 | finally |
| 10:43 | Shabbat the Sabbath was ended |
| 10:47 | what would be to us Saturday night |
| 10:49 | is to the Jew the first day of the week |
| 10:53 | or as Jesus called it on the third day |
| 10:57 | he will rise again |
| 10:59 | Jesus visits the souls in prison from |
| 11:02 | the time of Noah |
| 11:05 | the Earth turns |
| 11:07 | and the new day |
| 11:09 | is Dawning |
| 11:11 | here’s how John puts it in his gospel |
| 11:14 | the 20th chapter beginning with the |
| 11:16 | first verse |
| 11:17 | now on the first day of the week Mary |
| 11:20 | Magdalene came early to the tomb while |
| 11:24 | it was still dark and saw the stone |
| 11:25 | already taken away from the tomb and so |
| 11:28 | she ran and came to Simon Peter and to |
| 11:30 | the other disciple whom Jesus loved |
| 11:33 | she came while it was still dark |
| 11:36 | but Darkness |
| 11:37 | is turning into light and all the world |
| 11:40 | is beginning a new creation humanity is |
| 11:44 | reconciled to God and the great foes of |
| 11:47 | humanity sin death and the devil have |
| 11:50 | been vanquished |
| 11:52 | for all of those who believe in Jesus |
| 11:55 | Christ |
| 11:56 | these enemies have become toothless |
| 11:59 | tigers |
| 12:00 | they can only Roar but they have no |
| 12:03 | power to destroy |
| 12:06 | Jesus is Alive |
| 12:10 | he has passed through the walls of the |
| 12:12 | Tomb |
| 12:13 | he is no longer wearing his grave |
| 12:15 | wrappings |
| 12:16 | he’s wearing a robe of Resurrection |
| 12:19 | he the new Adam is the firstborn from |
| 12:22 | the dead |
| 12:25 | Mary delivers her message to Peter and |
| 12:27 | John who run to the tomb we’re told that |
| 12:30 | they see the linen wrappings quote lying |
| 12:33 | there end quote |
| 12:35 | that is one word in English there’s two |
| 12:38 | words lying there but in Greek it’s |
| 12:39 | simply the word keimana |
| 12:42 | lying there |
| 12:44 | it’s spoken of an infant who would be |
| 12:47 | wrapped and placed in a crib and we |
| 12:49 | would say ah |
| 12:51 | the baby’s lying there |
| 12:53 | or it could be spoken even of a village |
| 12:55 | that is nicely situated in a meadow we |
| 12:59 | would say it’s just lying there |
| 13:01 | now at this point we’re told |
| 13:04 | that the wrappings from the body of |
| 13:06 | Jesus were lying there |
| 13:09 | one would have had to have cut the |
| 13:11 | cocoon-like wrappings or disheveled |
| 13:13 | their folds terribly to get the body of |
| 13:15 | Jesus out |
| 13:18 | but the body |
| 13:20 | was gone |
| 13:22 | and the the wrappings were still in |
| 13:26 | their folds they were still in the right |
| 13:28 | place |
| 13:30 | they were just lying there |
| 13:34 | it was a clear testimony they were a |
| 13:36 | witness to the resurrection of Jesus |
| 13:40 | strangely enough though you remember |
| 13:42 | this |
| 13:43 | sudarion is what it’s called the napkin |
| 13:45 | that goes under the chin and ties at the |
| 13:48 | top of the head well it should have been |
| 13:49 | in the midst of those folds but it’s not |
| 13:52 | instead you remember the Jews require a |
| 13:55 | second Witness |
| 13:56 | the sudarion is the second witness for |
| 13:59 | it is wrapped up in a place apart by |
| 14:02 | itself |
| 14:04 | making a separate testimony |
| 14:06 | to the reality of the Resurrection |
| 14:10 | of Jesus |
| 14:16 | Jesus meets with Mary and the women he |
| 14:19 | meets with Simon Peter and the disciples |
| 14:24 | it is the first day of the new creation |
| 14:27 | on that new day everything everywhere is |
| 14:31 | changed |
| 14:32 | when God first created it was a mighty |
| 14:35 | work |
| 14:37 | but it was only a shadow of what was to |
| 14:39 | come |
| 14:40 | for this new creation this Resurrection |
| 14:42 | Day |
| 14:43 | restored the broken Fellowship indeed |
| 14:48 | restored the intimacy |
| 14:50 | between God |
| 14:52 | and his beloved children |
| 14:54 | who had strayed so far and sinned so |
| 14:58 | greatly |
| 15:00 | his beloved Son the life-giving second |
| 15:04 | Adam |
| 15:05 | had established a new creation |
| 15:08 | and in it a new relationship |
| 15:12 | that by grace through faith |
| 15:14 | the children are restored to the bosom |
| 15:16 | of the father |
| 15:19 | and there was evening |
| 15:21 | and there was mourning |
| 15:23 | a new day |
| 15:25 | and God saw everything that he had done |
| 15:29 | and God said |
| 15:32 | it is good |
| 15:35 | amen |
