0:08let’s talk about the temptation of Jesus
0:13our lord Jesus was baptized by John in
0:15the River Jordan
0:17and the heavens opened the Holy Spirit
0:19descended upon him and a voice was heard
0:21from Heaven this is my beloved Son in
0:25him I am well pleased
0:27then the spirit of God LED Jesus out
0:30into the wilderness
0:32he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and
0:35when he was hungry the devil came
0:38to tempt him
0:40the first temptation of the devil
0:44was concerning the identity of Jesus
0:47if you are the son of God
0:49says the devil
0:51turn these stones into bread
0:54if you are the son of God
0:57when Jesus had just heard his Heavenly
0:59Father declare his identity
1:03this is my beloved Son in whom I’m well
1:05pleased
1:07Jesus did not doubt the word of God
1:10Jesus did not doubt his identity
1:14Temptation number one
1:16Jesus defeated the devil
1:20then the devil took him to the Pinnacle
1:22of the Temple
1:23and invited Jesus to throw himself off
1:26if you are the son of God
1:28throw yourself down
1:30and the angels will catch you lest you
1:33dash your foot against a stone
1:37this was kind of a variation on the
1:39first Temptation it was an identity
1:41temptation but also
1:44Jesus was to question the identity of
1:47God was God really going to catch him
1:49was God going to protect him was God
1:51going to provide for him
1:54but Jesus does not doubt his identity
1:58nor does he doubt the father’s identity
2:02he knows that the heavenly father
2:04cares for him
2:06and protects him
2:07Jesus trusts God
2:10Temptation number two
2:12Jesus defeats the devil again
2:17now
2:18Temptation number three the devil takes
2:20Jesus
2:21to the top of a high mountain and there
2:23he shows him all the kingdoms of the
2:26Earth
2:26as if he owned them himself he offered
2:29them to Jesus
2:31saying that he would give them to the
2:33Lord if Jesus would Bow Down and Worship
2:36Him this is the sin of idolatry
2:42but Jesus
2:44knows that there is but one true God
2:47and he will worship that true God Alone
2:52Jesus will not worship another God Jesus
2:55passes the third temptation
2:58Jesus defeats the devil yet a third time
3:03some May
3:04wonder why these Temptations are
3:07included in the Bible well
3:09they’re included first because Jesus
3:11told his disciples about them
3:14and second because God wanted the
3:16Temptations included in Holy Scripture
3:19well why why does God want the
3:23temptation of Jesus recorded for us
3:27and some would say because they teach us
3:30how to defeat the Devil when we Face
3:32spiritual Temptations
3:36uh we will face the question the
3:39Temptation about being children of God
3:42are you really a child of God
3:44are you really saved are you really
3:46going to heaven
3:49frankly sometimes we will win that
3:51battle that Temptation and sometimes we
3:54will not
3:55our lord Jesus would remind us that if
3:57you believe and are baptized you will be
3:59saved Mark 16 16. so stand on your
4:03baptism it’s God’s promise to you
4:06and if you have faith the size of a
4:09grain of mustard seed that’s enough to
4:11move a whole Mountain
4:13surely the issue is not the amount of
4:16Faith you have
4:18but the faithfulness of the one in whom
4:21your faith rests
4:23Jesus
4:25you’ll not only face Temptations about
4:28your own identity you’ll face
4:30Temptations about God’s identity is he
4:33truly going to care for you are you
4:35really going to be cared for as his
4:37child will he provide for you will he
4:39protect you
4:41sometimes you’ll win this temptation yes
4:44I trust God other times you may not I’m
4:47not sure my faith is very strong today
4:51Jesus would have you prayed the Lord’s
4:53prayer Our Father Who Art in Heaven and
4:56he has taught us to say give us this day
4:58our daily bread and to trust that God
5:01will provide what we need in fact Jesus
5:03teaches us in The Sermon on the Mount
5:05that God knows what we’re going to ask
5:07for long before we ask for it God is
5:10faithful you can trust him
5:13and will be tempted regarding idolatry
5:17I doubt that any of us will be
5:21tempted to worship a Buddha or a demon
5:25but idolatry can take a different form
5:27for us
5:29every time that we do not forgive
5:32someone
5:34or love someone
5:36every time we choose
5:39selfishness
5:42self-aggrandizement
5:45we commit idolatry
5:47we choose ourselves over the word of God
5:50instead of choosing God first we choose
5:52ourselves first
5:54our thoughts our words our actions
5:59selfishly protect and aggrandize
6:03ourselves
6:05instead of
6:06following the Commandments of God and
6:08bringing glory to him and care for our
6:11neighbor
6:13to be guilty of one commandment is to be
6:15guilty for them all
6:17so why did
6:19God want the temptation of Jesus
6:23to be provided for us
6:25is it to give us one more law one more
6:29set of Commandments
6:31I think not
6:33I think just the opposite
6:36I think it is to give us a wonderful
6:39statement of God’s grace
6:40and mercy
6:42you see I do not think that the
6:44Temptation was left to be a how-to
6:46instruction of how we are to defeat the
6:49Devil I do not think
6:51that there’s any way that you and I can
6:54defeat the Devil consistently and
6:56constantly
6:58we want to but we can’t
7:01the point is that the Temptation account
7:03teaches us that Jesus has already done
7:06this Jesus already defeated the devil
7:11do you and I
7:13fail to Temptation again and again do we
7:16doubt our true identity is baptized
7:18children of God do we doubt whether God
7:21will provide for us and protect us do we
7:23fall to the sin of idolatry
7:26selfishly choosing our own ways our own
7:32desires
7:35yes we do again and again
7:37but our Salvation is not based upon our
7:40ability to defeat the Devil our
7:42salvation is based upon the fact that
7:43Jesus already did defeat the Devil
7:47for you
7:50because of your faith in Jesus
7:53you have no sin
7:55because of your faith in Jesus
7:59you have no death
8:02because of your faith in Jesus you are
8:05already righteous
8:07because of your faith in Jesus
8:10you are already redeemed
8:14the temptation of Jesus
8:19isn’t
8:21to show you what you cannot do
8:24it is to show you what Jesus has already
8:26done
8:27for you
8:29and yes you’ll face the devil and by
8:32God’s grace you’ll use the things that
8:34Jesus has taught you to use Holy
8:36Scripture the trust in God to trust in
8:38God’s word
8:40but when you fail and when you fall
8:44as
8:46you know you will
8:48the next time
8:51ask
8:52this
8:54who will bring any charge
8:58against God’s elect
9:01it is God
9:02who justifies
9:05who is the one who will condemn
9:08Christ Jesus is he who died yea who
9:11rather rose from the dead who sits at
9:13the right hand of God the Father
9:14Almighty who intercedes for us
9:19who will separate us from the love of
9:22God in Christ Jesus Will tribulation
9:26or distress or persecution or nakedness
9:29or famine or sword
9:32and all these things
9:35we are more than conquerors through him
9:39who loves us
9:42for I am convinced that neither death
9:44nor life
9:46nor angels nor principalities nor powers
9:49no things present nor things to come nor
9:52height nor depth nor any other creature
9:54will be able to separate us
9:57from the love of God in Christ Jesus
10:03for in Jesus Christ
10:07is your identity
10:09in Jesus Christ
10:12is the fullness of God’s faithfulness
10:15in Jesus Christ
10:18is your strength
10:20and your security
10:22now and forever
10:26amen
