| 0:08 | let’s talk about the temptation of Jesus |
| 0:13 | our lord Jesus was baptized by John in |
| 0:15 | the River Jordan |
| 0:17 | and the heavens opened the Holy Spirit |
| 0:19 | descended upon him and a voice was heard |
| 0:21 | from Heaven this is my beloved Son in |
| 0:25 | him I am well pleased |
| 0:27 | then the spirit of God LED Jesus out |
| 0:30 | into the wilderness |
| 0:32 | he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and |
| 0:35 | when he was hungry the devil came |
| 0:38 | to tempt him |
| 0:40 | the first temptation of the devil |
| 0:44 | was concerning the identity of Jesus |
| 0:47 | if you are the son of God |
| 0:49 | says the devil |
| 0:51 | turn these stones into bread |
| 0:54 | if you are the son of God |
| 0:57 | when Jesus had just heard his Heavenly |
| 0:59 | Father declare his identity |
| 1:03 | this is my beloved Son in whom I’m well |
| 1:05 | pleased |
| 1:07 | Jesus did not doubt the word of God |
| 1:10 | Jesus did not doubt his identity |
| 1:14 | Temptation number one |
| 1:16 | Jesus defeated the devil |
| 1:20 | then the devil took him to the Pinnacle |
| 1:22 | of the Temple |
| 1:23 | and invited Jesus to throw himself off |
| 1:26 | if you are the son of God |
| 1:28 | throw yourself down |
| 1:30 | and the angels will catch you lest you |
| 1:33 | dash your foot against a stone |
| 1:37 | this was kind of a variation on the |
| 1:39 | first Temptation it was an identity |
| 1:41 | temptation but also |
| 1:44 | Jesus was to question the identity of |
| 1:47 | God was God really going to catch him |
| 1:49 | was God going to protect him was God |
| 1:51 | going to provide for him |
| 1:54 | but Jesus does not doubt his identity |
| 1:58 | nor does he doubt the father’s identity |
| 2:02 | he knows that the heavenly father |
| 2:04 | cares for him |
| 2:06 | and protects him |
| 2:07 | Jesus trusts God |
| 2:10 | Temptation number two |
| 2:12 | Jesus defeats the devil again |
| 2:17 | now |
| 2:18 | Temptation number three the devil takes |
| 2:20 | Jesus |
| 2:21 | to the top of a high mountain and there |
| 2:23 | he shows him all the kingdoms of the |
| 2:26 | Earth |
| 2:26 | as if he owned them himself he offered |
| 2:29 | them to Jesus |
| 2:31 | saying that he would give them to the |
| 2:33 | Lord if Jesus would Bow Down and Worship |
| 2:36 | Him this is the sin of idolatry |
| 2:42 | but Jesus |
| 2:44 | knows that there is but one true God |
| 2:47 | and he will worship that true God Alone |
| 2:52 | Jesus will not worship another God Jesus |
| 2:55 | passes the third temptation |
| 2:58 | Jesus defeats the devil yet a third time |
| 3:03 | some May |
| 3:04 | wonder why these Temptations are |
| 3:07 | included in the Bible well |
| 3:09 | they’re included first because Jesus |
| 3:11 | told his disciples about them |
| 3:14 | and second because God wanted the |
| 3:16 | Temptations included in Holy Scripture |
| 3:19 | well why why does God want the |
| 3:23 | temptation of Jesus recorded for us |
| 3:27 | and some would say because they teach us |
| 3:30 | how to defeat the Devil when we Face |
| 3:32 | spiritual Temptations |
| 3:36 | uh we will face the question the |
| 3:39 | Temptation about being children of God |
| 3:42 | are you really a child of God |
| 3:44 | are you really saved are you really |
| 3:46 | going to heaven |
| 3:49 | frankly sometimes we will win that |
| 3:51 | battle that Temptation and sometimes we |
| 3:54 | will not |
| 3:55 | our lord Jesus would remind us that if |
| 3:57 | you believe and are baptized you will be |
| 3:59 | saved Mark 16 16. so stand on your |
| 4:03 | baptism it’s God’s promise to you |
| 4:06 | and if you have faith the size of a |
| 4:09 | grain of mustard seed that’s enough to |
| 4:11 | move a whole Mountain |
| 4:13 | surely the issue is not the amount of |
| 4:16 | Faith you have |
| 4:18 | but the faithfulness of the one in whom |
| 4:21 | your faith rests |
| 4:23 | Jesus |
| 4:25 | you’ll not only face Temptations about |
| 4:28 | your own identity you’ll face |
| 4:30 | Temptations about God’s identity is he |
| 4:33 | truly going to care for you are you |
| 4:35 | really going to be cared for as his |
| 4:37 | child will he provide for you will he |
| 4:39 | protect you |
| 4:41 | sometimes you’ll win this temptation yes |
| 4:44 | I trust God other times you may not I’m |
| 4:47 | not sure my faith is very strong today |
| 4:51 | Jesus would have you prayed the Lord’s |
| 4:53 | prayer Our Father Who Art in Heaven and |
| 4:56 | he has taught us to say give us this day |
| 4:58 | our daily bread and to trust that God |
| 5:01 | will provide what we need in fact Jesus |
| 5:03 | teaches us in The Sermon on the Mount |
| 5:05 | that God knows what we’re going to ask |
| 5:07 | for long before we ask for it God is |
| 5:10 | faithful you can trust him |
| 5:13 | and will be tempted regarding idolatry |
| 5:17 | I doubt that any of us will be |
| 5:21 | tempted to worship a Buddha or a demon |
| 5:25 | but idolatry can take a different form |
| 5:27 | for us |
| 5:29 | every time that we do not forgive |
| 5:32 | someone |
| 5:34 | or love someone |
| 5:36 | every time we choose |
| 5:39 | selfishness |
| 5:42 | self-aggrandizement |
| 5:45 | we commit idolatry |
| 5:47 | we choose ourselves over the word of God |
| 5:50 | instead of choosing God first we choose |
| 5:52 | ourselves first |
| 5:54 | our thoughts our words our actions |
| 5:59 | selfishly protect and aggrandize |
| 6:03 | ourselves |
| 6:05 | instead of |
| 6:06 | following the Commandments of God and |
| 6:08 | bringing glory to him and care for our |
| 6:11 | neighbor |
| 6:13 | to be guilty of one commandment is to be |
| 6:15 | guilty for them all |
| 6:17 | so why did |
| 6:19 | God want the temptation of Jesus |
| 6:23 | to be provided for us |
| 6:25 | is it to give us one more law one more |
| 6:29 | set of Commandments |
| 6:31 | I think not |
| 6:33 | I think just the opposite |
| 6:36 | I think it is to give us a wonderful |
| 6:39 | statement of God’s grace |
| 6:40 | and mercy |
| 6:42 | you see I do not think that the |
| 6:44 | Temptation was left to be a how-to |
| 6:46 | instruction of how we are to defeat the |
| 6:49 | Devil I do not think |
| 6:51 | that there’s any way that you and I can |
| 6:54 | defeat the Devil consistently and |
| 6:56 | constantly |
| 6:58 | we want to but we can’t |
| 7:01 | the point is that the Temptation account |
| 7:03 | teaches us that Jesus has already done |
| 7:06 | this Jesus already defeated the devil |
| 7:11 | do you and I |
| 7:13 | fail to Temptation again and again do we |
| 7:16 | doubt our true identity is baptized |
| 7:18 | children of God do we doubt whether God |
| 7:21 | will provide for us and protect us do we |
| 7:23 | fall to the sin of idolatry |
| 7:26 | selfishly choosing our own ways our own |
| 7:32 | desires |
| 7:35 | yes we do again and again |
| 7:37 | but our Salvation is not based upon our |
| 7:40 | ability to defeat the Devil our |
| 7:42 | salvation is based upon the fact that |
| 7:43 | Jesus already did defeat the Devil |
| 7:47 | for you |
| 7:50 | because of your faith in Jesus |
| 7:53 | you have no sin |
| 7:55 | because of your faith in Jesus |
| 7:59 | you have no death |
| 8:02 | because of your faith in Jesus you are |
| 8:05 | already righteous |
| 8:07 | because of your faith in Jesus |
| 8:10 | you are already redeemed |
| 8:14 | the temptation of Jesus |
| 8:19 | isn’t |
| 8:21 | to show you what you cannot do |
| 8:24 | it is to show you what Jesus has already |
| 8:26 | done |
| 8:27 | for you |
| 8:29 | and yes you’ll face the devil and by |
| 8:32 | God’s grace you’ll use the things that |
| 8:34 | Jesus has taught you to use Holy |
| 8:36 | Scripture the trust in God to trust in |
| 8:38 | God’s word |
| 8:40 | but when you fail and when you fall |
| 8:44 | as |
| 8:46 | you know you will |
| 8:48 | the next time |
| 8:51 | ask |
| 8:52 | this |
| 8:54 | who will bring any charge |
| 8:58 | against God’s elect |
| 9:01 | it is God |
| 9:02 | who justifies |
| 9:05 | who is the one who will condemn |
| 9:08 | Christ Jesus is he who died yea who |
| 9:11 | rather rose from the dead who sits at |
| 9:13 | the right hand of God the Father |
| 9:14 | Almighty who intercedes for us |
| 9:19 | who will separate us from the love of |
| 9:22 | God in Christ Jesus Will tribulation |
| 9:26 | or distress or persecution or nakedness |
| 9:29 | or famine or sword |
| 9:32 | and all these things |
| 9:35 | we are more than conquerors through him |
| 9:39 | who loves us |
| 9:42 | for I am convinced that neither death |
| 9:44 | nor life |
| 9:46 | nor angels nor principalities nor powers |
| 9:49 | no things present nor things to come nor |
| 9:52 | height nor depth nor any other creature |
| 9:54 | will be able to separate us |
| 9:57 | from the love of God in Christ Jesus |
| 10:03 | for in Jesus Christ |
| 10:07 | is your identity |
| 10:09 | in Jesus Christ |
| 10:12 | is the fullness of God’s faithfulness |
| 10:15 | in Jesus Christ |
| 10:18 | is your strength |
| 10:20 | and your security |
| 10:22 | now and forever |
| 10:26 | amen |
